ragged breaths mingled with the sounding pitter patter of the rain on the bedroom window, the brunette had awoken from their sleep again. it was unfortunate, they haven’t been sleeping properly for weeks now, they’ve been awoken every night by nightmares. a different one each time but all with the same reoccuring theme, it seems as if nightmares were the only things they’ve been getting these past few weeks.
the nightmares flashed in front of them and all at once they could feel the tugging on their hair, the burning sensation on the soles of their foot, the stinging of their cheek and the gaping hopelessness they felt at the fourteen years they suffered under the place they once called home. they’ve gotten out of there now but everytime they recalled everything that happened in that..place they could feel the slightest bit of bile rise up their throat.
one….two minutes pass by, they’ve began to calm themselves now with the rain as company; they liked the rain, the gentle sound of water meeting the earth always made them relax. running a hand through their forehead, drenched with beads of sweat, they began to reassure themselves. they’re in a new place now, the monsters of their past can’t touch them now or go anywhere near them and that thought alone was enough for them.
the sound of soft foot steps danced in the air, they could feel themselves go alert. who in their right mind would be awake at this hour? they could slowly feel the panic settle in, it couldn’t possibly be a burglar.. could it? hurriedly, russell buries themselves underneath the covers, waiting for whoever it was outside to just peacefully go and be on their way.
fate had other plans. the footsteps sounded louder now, THEY were coming to russell’s room. they brace for a storm, staring intently at the door knob, it twisted open with ease. instead of a masked figure coming in, it was their new “father,” well one of them anyway. he spoke softly in a voice laced with worry, “..are you fairing well? it has come to my.. attention that you haven’t been sleeping peacefully these past few days.”
ah, they were talking to the more serious one. what was his name…nathaniel?
“uhmm…yeah,” russell murmurs softly under their breath, rubbing their nape. they never were a people type of person, they never got the chance to go out and meet other people but now they can. the thought exhilarated them, they were free now. the bed dipped slightly, nathaniel was sitting on the edge now, quietly but with ease. “you are aware that you can talk to me and your dad about anything?” and as if on cue, cole appears at the door, with a groggy smile on his tired face. “your dad’s right, russell.”
russell’s eyes fall on cole’s face, he’s got noticeable bags under his eyes but he still looked great nonetheless. cole approaches nathaniel and plants a gentle kiss on the other’s forehead. “so are you going to tell your awesome dad’s your problem or do we have to pry it out of you?” russell let out a breath they didn’t even know they were holding. they were going to be okay. this was their home now and they’re safe.
