Speaking of things to remember: hey guys remember this?
Tumblr Names Russian Propaganda Accounts After Long Silence
Because I sure do!
Remember how they were actively pretending to be young people concerned about social justice in order to make sure Trump won by spreading bad blood, resentment and suspicion amongst the demographics who would be most hurt by him?
Russian Trolls Ran Wild On Tumblr And The Company Refuses To Say Anything About It
BECAUSE I SURE DO!
We’re going into probably the most important American election year for fucking ages.
They’re going to be back. Even if it’s not the Internet Research Agency aka Putin’s intelligence goons specifically, the fascist radicals know this shit works now.
Exclusionist bullshit plays right into this. Right into it.
And like here’s the thing:
Exclusionists are a pain in my ass and I will call their lies when I see them.
But I’m well aware that Mike Pence doesn’t give a fuck about our differences. I’m well aware that the people putting kids in dog cages and denying the children of queer men their citizenship laugh at our fights over who gets what words.
And yeah when it comes to it I am absolutely here for Miss Radfem’s right to the legal protections and rights due to a human being. Even a really damn ignorant and bigoted one. I will counter her propaganda bullshit where I can.
But never ever forget that the people trying to drive the world right now hate us ALL.
My girlfriend’s rule from 1990s street protests is: If someone is indistinguishable from a police provocateur, you stop letting them into the planning meetings.
Police would routinely seed plainclothes officers into activist groups and try to convince them to do something that would ruin their public standing or, even better, make them all criminals who could be arrested. “Let’s rob a bank!” “We could get this money from running drugs.” “Let’s firebomb the place!”
We need to be able to spot the agent provocateurs within our midst, and sit on them before they can ruin everything.
I think it’s important to say: it’s okay if you fell for this. Don’t be ashamed: those people are GOOD at what they do. Be angry. When you see this kind of activity, _call them out_ on being fakes who don’t actually care about the people they’re trying to stir up.
Be angry. Be angry and don’t let them do it again.
I wish to belatedly reblog this addition, because yes. Correct.
I’m just afraid that posts like this are going to make people hesitant to share anything critical of any Democratic candidate (before or after the primary). I saw so many people giving Bernie supporters a ration of shit because we didn’t like Hillary (even though plenty of us held our noses and voted because we knew what the alternative was) and that’s bullshit, too. Bernie Bros and Jill Stein supporters didn’t get Trump elected, apathy and outright hatred on the part of average Americans + an outdated election system that can easily be gamed by crooked lawmakers, gerrymandering, and actual fraud/ hacking did.
For me personally, I don’t care if they run the fucking Geico lizard against Trump. I would vote for a mop with a face drawn on it if it had the DNC’s money behind it, because money still means everything in politics at the end of the day and we don’t have the luxury of voting our hopes, only the duty to vote our fears.
That’s not to say we shouldn’t have a bullshit detector and be aware that what we’re seeing might be propaganda, but let’s not dismiss or jump on all criticism immediately. No candidate is spotless, pretty much every politician is a weasel whose primary goal is, if not straight up grift and getting rich, at least doing whatever it takes to maintain their job security. That doesn’t mean give up and never vote, either–lesser evils is still the long and short of it. Do your own research and don’t let social media be your sole source of information on a candidate (or anything, ever).
Basically, I’m afraid that tumblr culture, being what it is, is going to shun and shame any post that’s not 100% hearts and flowers because it might be the Russians at it again. And that’s just as dangerous as falling for the actual propaganda.
So here’s the thing. And minor apologies if this is a bit snappy-seeming - I don’t mean it to be, but I’m grabbing time between work-things and I have a headache and I am informed by reliable witnesses that this means I can come off snappy even if I don’t mean to:
a) If you’re focused on giving other people “a ration of shit”, (or other people giving you shit) you’re already doing it wrong, and getting caught up in the psyops.
So those people? Those people were caught up in the psyops. Just as hard as the Bernie supporters wandering around acting like there was no difference between HRC and the Cheeto.
And yeah: I saw both. And yeah, sure, plenty held their nose and voted! And plenty HRC stans were also toxic as shit. And plenty of Bernie stans were also still pushing CONSPIRACYYYYY and whatever the fuck post-primary, and all kinds of other stuff. The whole thing was a mess, and that was the point. That was exactly what they wanted. And unfortunately we only have control over ourselves. I can’t promise you a bunch of [whatever candidate] stans won’t do the same thing this time around! And in fact I can promise you that bad faith actors pretending to be [candidate here] stans ABSOLUTELY WILL.
Block them, focus on not having that fucker or his runner up holding the codes to the largest nuclear arsenal on this fucking planet, and push on. And with the people who will listen to you, point out to them when “hey that’s a thing, and it’s not helpful”, and do what you can with what you actually control (which is you!) to damp down this Crap.
b) The point of the psyops is not actually to “split the vote”. The point of the psyops is to feed the hatred, despair and apathy in order to suppress turnout and campaigning.
If the underlying narrative of the post is “well if X happens/doesn’t happen it’s all just as bad as the other, you might as well stay home/not vote/not bother”, it’s a problem. Not just being critical.
Want to point out that Harris has some super sketchy shit in terms of her legal career and that’s a problem? Rock on.
Want to point out that Sanders has his head up his ass about race, gender, and a few other things? You’re fine!
Want to go “uuuuuugh” at Biden because OH MY GOD STAHP? Sure!
Want to be iffy about Warren for a whole passel of reasons, including still not at all being sure if she actually grasps why the whole “Cherokee ancestor” thing was so fucking uncool? You go!
When something starts suggesting that there’s no difference between them and a Trump second term, when you start suggesting that “I’d rather have Trump because at least it won’t be a compromise, he’ll just be outright evil”, when the actual text or subtext is “if we don’t get the perfect candidate voting is pointless, it’s all corrupt anyway, blah blah blah blah?” That’s when to nope out of that.
That’s when not to spread it. That’s when to block it out of threads you’re in control of (like I’ve done on multiple occasions with this one). That’s when to have a SERIOUS talk with people who are close enough to you to listen, and when to start keeping an eye on the source when it’s at a couple removes and start seeing if that’s the ONLY thing they’re contributing and maybe go ahahahaha okay then.
THAT is the critical detail. THAT is the issue, and the problem, and the REAL AND PRESENT THREAT. Especially in the USA.
