TFATWS is all about the shield, for obvious reasons, but have they actually stopped and thought about WHERE that shield came from? I don’t mean Captain America’s shield, I mean THAT SPECIFIC Captain America shield. 

Our timeline’s shield gets smashed by Thanos in 2023. Old!Steve shows up, presumably the long way round, with a shield he procured somewhere in their past. Again, while the MCU itself might be getting a handle on the multiverse, Endgame itself has ZERO consistency and zero awareness of the difference between time travel and dimensional travel.

Nebula2009 gets killed by Nebula2023 and nothing happens. Gamora2009 now lives in 2023, therefore making it impossible for Thanos2018 to kill her on Vormir and obtain the soul stone. None of the Avengers remember fighting themselves in 2012, even if that branch of the timeline can’t be “pruned” by returning the stones because Loki2012 disappeared with that timeline’s Tesseract. 

If changing the past doesn’t change the future it either a) always happened that way and you just didn’t know it or b) you’re in that moment creating a different timeline.

Back to the shield. While Endgame is CRYSTAL CLEAR that Steve went back to his own past, in his own timeline, and lived his remaining life through linearly from the 40s to 2023 when he shows up after Tony’s funeral, he must have passed through many alternate timelines in other to return all the stones and Thor’s hammer. We can even argue that he quote unquote fixed all of those timelines by returning the stones appropriately, except he can’t fix 2012 because Loki and thinking about him handing the Red fucking Skull the soul stone so his timeline’s Natasha can die for it makes me want to rip my heart out. 

In all other timelines, the shield is with another Steve or in the ice with another Steve. So where does the shield Old!Steve gives Sam in Endgame actually come from? Which Steve gave it up? Did Old!Steve just surf dimensions until he found one where he wasn’t Captain America, or he died, and stayed (like an asshole)? I think it’s pretty clear that if TFATWS retcons Steve as having dimension hopped rather than time hopped, well, the shield then obviously doesn’t belong in this timeline. 

That’s not what Madame Hydra means when she tells Walker that the shield doesn’t belong to the government at all, I assume, but.  This is a whole lot of nerdery to say that I find it a glaring plot hole that no one questions wtf Old!Steve was even doing or how because that shield is not supposed to exist.

Ignoring the time travel et al comments- that is a longer discussion….

The design is different; it could be from a timeline in which Sam was Captain America which is why when Sam says it feels like it belongs to someone else Steve says No.

Also, didn’t the shield that was all know still have the bullet marks from when Peggy shot at it in TFA? I’m sure it did. Like Steve never asked them to buff those out.

Also what happened to the really cool blue Stealth suit shield? Where did that one go?

I think that’s a very modern, pervasive idea in our entertainment, whether it’s on Instagram or in fiction, to show only the good and the perfect side of yourself. It’s just a lie and it’s very dull, and it’s nothing that anyone should even strive for.

Let’s be honest - Everest should be cut off from climbers, and the only people that should be allowed up there are ppl who volunteer to clean up all the garbage and human excrement adrenaline junkies have left up there over the decades, and anyone who volunteers to attempt to bring down any bodies of those who died.

The ascent is too dangerous, too many ill-equipped and unprepared climbers try to make the climb, and too much garbage is piling up and poisoning the run off that communities around Everest rely on to live.

When it comes to Steve’s ending - which I still hate - I’ve always avoided this whole diatribe that some fans like to voice, which is centered around the idea that “Steve abandoned Bucky” and that it’s “unrealistic he’d ever leave Bucky for Peggy,” etc etc etc. I didn’t really jam with this particular take for a number of reasons, not least of all because I thought it kinda implies Bucky is helpless without Steve and also that Steve isn’t allowed to want anything other than Bucky. 

Having said that.

There is something quite cruel in watching Bucky fumble his way through the world alone, isn’t there? Not just the nightmares, but finding redemption from his time with Hydra and seeking new purpose and coping with losing his entire family.

Maybe the whole point of Bucky’s storyline in TFATWS will be that Bucky can find independence and happiness on his own, without Steve’s help, and that’s great. But it’s frustrating to know that Steve knows how hard this is. He went through a lot of this himself, and one of the things that drove him and gave him renewed hope was the idea of being reunited with Bucky.

So yeah, Steve’s choice does feel a bit selfish now, as we watch Bucky struggle. I can’t help but think back on how Steve fought for Bucky’s freedom and then mourned him all over again for five years, only to leave at the first opportunity.

And I still feel kinda icky saying that, because I don’t like the idea that Bucky’s healing is only valuable if Steve is there to see it through. Because that’s not true. Perhaps if we had seen 2+ movies where Steve fights his own team members to protect Peggy, I would be more inclined to endorse him chasing a happily ever after with Peggy, but they did so much work to establish Bucky and Steve’s friendship. Romantic, platonic - I don’t care what your take is. That’s not so important in this context. Chris Evans said himself that Steve sees the world in black and white - wrong and right - unless Bucky is in the picture. Bucky is the shade of grey in Steve’s moral compass. Bucky is the person he’s willing to throw away the shield for - we literally saw it happen. 

So you’d think, in light of that, Steve would want to make sure someone so important to him is doing well. You’d think he would stay with Bucky, after going through so much and fighting so hard to have him back, and retain that friendship. 

I know I’m not saying anything that hasn’t already been debated to death, but watching TFATWS really just drilled down how awful Bucky has it right now, and how much happier he might be if Steve was still around.

Related: I’m very curious if the show will ever specify what happened to Steve. People are certainly acting like he’s dead; was he so old that he immediately kicked the bucket after coming back and handing over the shield? Or are the Avengers-and-Co letting the world assume Steve died fighting Thanos and there’s old!Steve living off by himself somewhere?

And if so, why isn’t he (a) calling Sam to say “I gave you the shield, why is someone with an inadequate ass waving it around on television? That is not America’s ass, Sam” and (b) yeah, why isn’t he with, or at least in some kind of contact with, Bucky? Is Bucky doing this all on his own by choice? That would be interesting….

“So.” Harris shifted in his seat.  “You’re Agent Coulson’s mother.”

“Not really.”  Shirley took a sip of her coffee.  “I’m just the latest in a long line of government operatives assigned to act as his ‘mother’ to provide a semi-plausible cover story for the general public.” She paused, holding Harris’ gaze without blinking.  “They learned a few decades ago that providing him with a family-” She made finger quotes around the word.  “Went a long way into convincing people he was human.”

Harris stared at her.  “The thing is, I kind of believe you,” he said.

Shirley smiled.  “I know.”

Harris went back to his cocoa.  “Really not happy that I kind of believe you.”

“I know,” she repeated with a slight smile.  “Let me guess.  On at least one occasion, listening to Phil has kept you alive.”

Harris opened his mouth.  Closed it.  “Might be more than one occasion,” he admitted.

“Good, that means you’re highly susceptible to the Coulson Tone of Authority,” she said.  “That makes things easier.”  Her handbag started ringing, and she held her coffee out to Harris.  “Hold this, please?”  Harris took it, and she fished in her bag, pulling out her phone.  She stabbed it with a firm fingertip.  “Hello, Phil.”

“Hello, Mom.”  Phil sounded tired.  “How are you?”

She took her coffee back.  “Oh, I’m fine, darling, taking a quick vacation.  Having a wonderful time.”

“So I’ve heard. I also heard you didn’t bring Dad.”

“No, he had some things to do.” Shirley smiled.  “If there’s nothing you need, Phil, I really should be-”

“Is there any particular reason you’ve borrowed McIntyre?”

“I want grandchildren,” Shirley said, and Harris choked on his cocoa.

“You HAVE grandchildren,” Phil said.  

“Yes, and only one of my children has given me any.  Get to work, Philip.”

There was a sigh.  “Hold please.”  There was a quick click, and then SHIELD hold music echoed from the phone speaker.  Shirley hummed along.  Harris wondered if he could make it to the door before she could take him down.  He gave her a sideward glance.  Or take him out.

He was pretty sure he wouldn’t make it.

The phone clicked.  “Sorry, Mom, I’ve passed on your demands and Clint immediately put his finger on his nose and said ‘Not it,’ so I’m afraid the answer’s no.”

“Fine.”  Shirley smiled down at the phone.  “Well, then, I’ll be keeping McIntrye for the time being.”

Another pause.  “Why.”

“Have a good day, Phil.” Shirley disconnected the line, and she dropped her phone back in her pocket.  “Now.  Get me Lewis.”

Harris took a deep breath.  “That seems like a very bad idea,” he said.

“Oh, it’s a terrible idea, and that’s why we’re doing it.”  Shirley smiled.  “Call her.”

Harris downed the rest of his cocoa in a long gulp, and tossed it towards the trashcan.  “Yes, ma’am.”
