Ths bishop’s twitter post
I experienced a few embarrassing seconds of confusion because in my language (French) the bishop is called the fool
today in defenses of boromir that no one asked for: tired of reading that boromir’s death was in vain because he failed to save merry & pippin from the uruk-hai. the fact that this clearly important warrior was willing to die to protect those two is what convinced the urukhai that they had indeed captured the halfing who carried whatever important thing saruman wanted. they took the hobbits to isengard (to isengard gard) because they thought they had the right ones! boromir didn’t succeed in preventing their capture but he did in fact keep them alive by making them seem valuable. furthermore, he actually also saves frodo in this way: because the orcs and uruk-hai think they have what they came for, they stop looking and turn back: if they had not, they might have ultimately found and captured frodo or at least raised the alarm that a hobbit with an Important Thing was on the loose, setting others searching. which is the very heart of tolkien’s worldview - that you do the right thing because it is right, and doing the right thing is never in vain.
to conclude this essay boromir died a hero and saved not just merry and pippin but also frodo and sam.
What and who is included in the lgbt/queer/gay(general) communities aren’t always super clear cut actually and like… that’s fine.
Like a cishet man that likes doing drag likely doesn’t consider himself queer and neither would any of his queer/lgbt friends but he might still be super active in the community and mostly hang out with gay guys and bring his girlfriend to pride and maybe even perform at pride. And maybe the queer community is where he feels most at home because he’s kind of feminine, and doing drag is a big part of his life.
Irl probably almost nobody would kick this guy out. A lot of internet discourse would. But that kind of makes no sense.
I grew up in the theatre community, and after I learned what being gay was I discovered that gay people were everywhere in theatre. But so were straight people that just kind of fell outside of societal norms a bit. Straight people that often just felt more comfortable around gay people because they could just be themselves.
And yeah that’s an obvious example of people that aren’t queer hanging out in queer spaces but there’s also a ton of gray area. Straight polyamorous people for example. People that identify as cis that “crossdress” or even do some things that might be considered to be part of “transitioning”. Or some intersex people that don’t id with the lgbt community. Or people that id as non binary but not as trans.
At some point you need to stop trying to figure out who definitively belongs in the club because like… there is no club. Irl queer spaces tend to cover huge swaths of people. There’s a lot of gray area. And also you’ll also tend to find a lot of cishet gender conforming people in these spaces too. Because their significant other or a family member or a good friend is lgbt+ or because they’re poly or because they just feel more comfortable around queer people or they just feel like fighting for gay rights is something that they’re supposed to be doing. And if they’re respectful and the space isn’t explicitly “no cishet right now” then like, them being there isn’t that much of an issue usually.
All of this internet discourse that tries to exclude or bully people just isn’t grounded in reality.
“A few years ago when Billie Piper was playing Rose, I was very worried because the next week’s episode was called something like The Day Rose Died. I can’t remember exactly what it was called. Well, my children were in love with Rose as a companion, and I was worried about her. So I sent an e-mail off to Russell T Davies, who of course had grown up on the classic Doctor Who series, and I said “Could you just reassure me that Rose does not, in fact, die because my children shouldn’t watch it if that happens,” and he sent an e-mail back to me saying, “You killed Adric. What do you care?””
That little girl is going places
I know more about economics than AOC and my knowledge on economics is on a high school level. Its actually embarassing how little she knows about this shit.
But hey, expecting a socialist to know about economics is like expecting a fish to know what a desert is.
Much of the ocean is a desert
You know what? Let’s use the allowance example again to make it even clearer.
Let’s pretend we have an allowance tax bracket with a 70% tax on money received after a certain point. To keep things simple, we’ll make the limit $90.
If a kid does chores and earns $10 in allowance, they get $10. They’re not going to be affected by the 70% tax.
If a kid does chores and earns $50, they get $50. They also aren’t in the 70% tax bracket, even though they make five times as much money as the kid making $10.
If a kid does chores and earns $100 in allowance, then they’re in the allowance tax bracket with the 70% tax.
$100 minus $90 is $10. This is the part that’s going to be taxed 70%.
70% of $10 is $7.
So the kid getting $100 in allowance will have $93 after the 70% tax takes its share.
Now, I’d never impose such a thing on actual kids. All of this is a thought exercise.
But if it were real, the kid making $10 and the kid making $50 would probably be kind of mad if the kid getting $93 was bitching about being short $7.
Also AOC majored in economics (actually one of her two majors) so step the FUCK off my congresswoman tyvm
every time someone mentions the little prince I almost forget it’s a children’s book because I literally cannot get through the part about being tamed without crying
“To me, you are still nothing more than a little boy who is just like a hundred thousand other little boys. And I have no need of you. And you, on your part, have no need of me. To you, I am nothing more than a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes. But if you tame me, then we shall need each other. To me, you will be unique in all the world. To you, I shall be unique in all the world…“
But if you tame me, it will be as if the sun came to shine on my life . I shall know the sound of a step that will be different from all the others. Other steps send me hurrying back underneath the ground. Yours will call me, like music, out of my burrow. And then look: you see the grain-fields down yonder? I do not eat bread. Wheat is of no use to me. The wheat fields have nothing to say to me. And that is sad. But you have hair that is the colour of gold. Think how wonderful that will be when you have tamed me! The grain, which is also golden, will bring me back the thought of you. And I shall love to listen to the wind in the wheat…” The fox gazed at the little prince, for a long time. “Please, tame me!” he said.”
So the little prince tamed the fox. And when the hour of his departure drew near —
“Ah,” said the fox, “I shall cry.”
“It is your own fault,” said the little prince. “I never wished you any sort of harm; but you wanted me to tame you…”
“Yes, that is so,” said the fox.
“But now you are going to cry!” said the little prince.
“Yes, that is so,” said the fox.
“Then it has done you no good at all!”
“It has done me good,” said the fox, “because of the color of the wheat fields.”
Hi Neil! Lot’s of love 💖
What do you like the most about David Tennant?
He’s a wonderful man. He’s one of our finest actors. He’s really funny. He’s astonishingly Scottish. He’s a great father to his kids. He’s extremely flammable.
A woman explaining how to pet a Mongolian mastiff. According to OP, this is Muyu and Mufang’s first Dahan (大寒; “Great Cold”; Jan 20 - Feb 3), which is the final term of the 24 solar terms in a year according to the Chinese calendar.
English added by me :)
“We made them a nest, but they won’t go to it” is such a universal pet owner mood. 😂
we will never have true gender equality until we start obnoxiously woobifying female villains. gone girl discourse is a good start but we need to go further. she needs to be like “I hurt people on purpose because I like it” onscreen and the fandom needs to be “she’s so misunderstood 🥺” and write five thousand out of character self-shipping fics. this will fix society
Hey btw, if you’re doing worldbuilding on something, and you’re scared of writing ~unrealistic~ things into it out of fear that it’ll sound lazy and ripped-out-of-your-ass, but you also don’t want to do all the back-breaking research on coming up with depressingly boring, but practical and ~realistic~ solutions, have a rule:
Just give the thing two layers of explanation. One to explain the specific problem, and another one explaining the explanation. Have an example:
Plot hole 1: If the vampires can’t stand daylight, why couldn’t they just move around underground?
Solution 1: They can’t go underground, the sewer system of the city is full of giant alligators who would eat them.
Well, that’s a very quick and simple explanation, which sure opens up additional questions.
Plot hole 2: How and why the fuck are there alligators in the sewers? How do they survive, what do they eat down there when there’s no vampires?
Solution 2: The nuns of the Underground Monastery feed and take care of them as a part of their sacred duties.
It takes exactly two layers to create an illusion that every question has an answer - that it’s just turtles all the way down. And if you’re lucky, you might even find that the second question’s answer loops right back into the first one, filling up the plot hole entirely:
Plot hole 3: Who the fuck are the sewer nuns and what’s their point and purpose?
Solution 3: The sewer nuns live underground in order to feed the alligators, in order to make sure that the vampires don’t try to move around via the sewer system.
When you’re just making things up, you don’t need to have an answer for everything - just two layers is enough to create the illusion of infinite depth. Answer the question that looms behind the answer of the first question, and a normal reader won’t bother to dig around for a 3rd question.
