Words cannot express my hatred
this guy needs to be chased out with pitchforks
he does not deserve that small town one bit holy moly
“Societal failure” bitch shut the fuck up and go to the local store
Okay no but as a person who lives in a town with less than 2,000 people, this man is actually talking about a very real issue that yall just do not understand. Yes, his delivery of said point is Not Good but the actual issue he’s discussing is a very real thing.
When you live in a town this small, there are things that you cannot buy anywhere but Amazon. There are so many things that are not available at local stores. My town has one dollar store and one grocery store. That’s it. There is no Walmart there’s no “general store” we have a dollar store and a grocery store. If the thing you need to purchase is not at said dollar store or grocery store, then your options are to drive 30+ mins to the nearest actual city, or buy it on Amazon.
Because the people living in towns like mine are usually fucking poor they often don’t have the option to spend their time driving that far to buy things, and even if they have the time to drive, buying things in store is often twice as expensive as Amazon, and that doesn’t include the price of gas. And when you are scraping by paycheck to paycheck on minimum wage, you’re gonna want to save as much money as you can. So you choose Amazon.
But the thing is, sometimes you need something now. And even if you pay a little extra for the faster delivery, you still end up waiting a weeks, or even months for things (if it ever even shows up). So you are left to either wait for that thing that you really need, spend way too much time and money going to the nearest city to get it, or just do without. Those are your options. No matter what you do you’re fucked.
I really want to emphasize who this fucks over: poor people, disabled people, and the elderly.
Hi, I’m poor and disabled. I do not drive and cannot handle long outings. I cannot go to the nearest city to buy things that aren’t available in my town. Amazon is often my only option to buy things that I need.
And I also want to address the very real point he made in the last sentence. When you live in a small town like this, the cities nearest to you are likely gonna be full of anti-vaxx anti-mask assholes. And if you are disabled or elderly, that’s a huge fucking risk for you. So sometimes Amazon is the only physically safe way for people to purchase things. Small towns don’t offer grocery delivery services and shit like that.
I understand hating Amazon, but please understand that some of us have no other options and trying to make us feel like shit for using a service that we have no choice but to use is ableist and classist. Like please for once in your fucking lives let poor, disabled, and elderly people talk about their experiences without shaming us.
The absolutely vile shit people are saying in the notes is fucked up actually.
This guy brought up a real fucking issue that is affecting real actual marginalized people and yall are saying “kill him” in the notes. Yall can pretend to be fucking progressive all you want but it’s very clear how you actually feel about disabled, poor, and elderly people. I also want to point out that many of the people affected by this issue are gonna be POC and/or queer as well.
This guy is fucking right, this is a societal failing. Do you think that this shit isn’t intentional? That Amazon doesn’t intentionally target marginalized people living in rural areas? You think it’s a fucking coincidence that the only place marginalized people can buy certain necesseties is on fucking Amazon? Do you really think this isn’t the result of systemic oppression?
Like good for you that you live somewhere where you can drive five minutes to the nearest store and buy everything you need without getting corona or getting hatecrimed but some of us don’t have that fucking luxury.
so many people in appalachia do their grocery shopping at dollar general or gas stations because the closest place you can buy groceries is like. 2 hours away
Yeah he ain’t wrong it’s thirty minutes by car to the nearest grocery store that isn’t price gouging and y'all can shut the fuck up.
The nearest Actual Grocery Store™ to my house is 35 minutes in one direction, and 40 minutes in the other. There are convenience stores and things like Dollar General, which offers a pathetically limited selection, no produce, and even the lunch meat is frozen. The hot dogs are frozen.
The nearest non-Walmart electronics store is an hour away. The nearest bookstore is 45 minutes away. If you’re looking for anything more specialized that you can get at a Wal-Mart, you’re looking at a minimum of one hour drive to the shopping mall on the outskirts of the nearest city, and possibly further than that.
I spent the first sixteen years in this house unable to get internet that didn’t come with a ridiculously low usage limit– and this was satellite or cellular. The only reason I have (really amazing) internet now is that my power company isn’t a for-profit company, but rather a cooperative, so running fiber optics to my house being something they can break even on, rather than make obscene amounts of money, is an option.
Instacart, Doordash, Uber, Lyft, Domino’s…. none of these are here. If you want garbage pickup, rather than taking your garbage to the dump yourself, you gotta know someone. The nearest dump is only open three days a week. We have one pharmacy, and it’s literally run out of a double-wide.
Yeah, Amazon may be the Devil, but nobody’s seen God in these parts in years.
