A silly little idea I got last spring while working on my final thesis- “What if non-avian feathered dinosaurs lived among us like birds?”

A few weeks ago, a young girl saw this rare Argonaut - often called a Paper Nautilus - washed onto the beach at East Cape Conran. She told locals about it and Myke Mollard went and picked up the little dude then released her back into deeper water. Hopefully survived; such a classic ‘animal’ of nature.
Photo and words by Andrew Barnes.
Wow there are so many comments claiming this is just “an octopus hiding in a shell” and “not real.”
No, this really is an animal called an Argonaut or paper nautilus. It is a type of octopus, but the female, who is MUCH larger than the male, secretes a nautilus-like shell from a papery substance. Why it looks so much like a nautilus shell is a subject of debate, since it is not produced by the same mechanisms at all.
This is a cg model by David Bodenstein, but it’s the clearest depiction around of the two specialized, fan-like tentacles that actually secrete the “paper” and form the shell.
She can leave the shell if she needs to, but those same two tentacles are usually gripping it tightly. Not only does it offer protection, but it serves as her egg case after she finds a mate. Like most octopuses, she dies after her babies hatch, so she does carry the shell around for the remainder of her life.
She typically swims with her mouth and suckers facing outward, the tips of her tentacles folded behind her into the shell so the whole animal looks like a weird ball of cephalopod.
The male has a tiny baby-like (neotenous?) form, but since octopuses deliver sperm through a single specialized arm, his has to be MUCH longer and larger than all his other arms in order to mate, and it’s usually kept in a weird little bag of skin.
All argonauts of any sex have a wild habit of grabbing on to the top of a jellyfish and either dragging it around with them or riding it, depending on how much bigger the jellyfish is. This not only protects the cephalopod with the jelly’s stinging tentacles, but helps it catch more food; there’s evidence that they use their beak to chew a tiny hole through the jelly’s cap and suck out their stomach contents. It’s kind of like being able to shift into a “parasitic” mode as they please, and kind of like using another animal as both a vehicle and eating utencil.
Here’s a little male with a jellyfish of his own!!!

Honestly, if you see an angel that’s all eyes and wings and wheels of fire, you should be worried. Like, not because it’s going to hurt you or anything, but because scripturally, angels invariably appear to ordinary people in human form. In general, they only show their inhuman true forms to prophets – which means if you’re seeing them like that, they come bearing responsibility.
angel: BE NOT AFRAID
human: oh fuck this is gonna be a group project isn’t it
human: oh fuck, oh shit. goddamn it.
angel: I CAN TAKE A LESS TERRIFYING FORM IF THAT WOULD HELP
human: buddy you could be a box of kittens and it wouldn’t do shit for my blood pressure right now
Oh to be the man in these stock photos…
This is the Mushroom Man (the Mushroom Man, the Mushroom Man). You have seen the Mushroom Man (who lives on Drury Lane) and will now be blessed with lovely forests and delicious foraged treats.
nobel prize worthy work

where’s that one “pakige” post bc like
AO3, Basic Logic, God, Everyone: You posted a chapter five minutes ago, and should get comments gradually over the next few hours!
Me, .5 seconds after posting, sitting with my face pressed up against my AO3 inbox: commente
This is why all my chapters are posted late at night (CET) so that I can’t obsess and might wake up to a few comments.
Me, at 3 AM, peering at my phone in the dark: commente
I don’t know if I can recommend anything that’s nothing but that, for reasons of my tastes in fiction, but I have a few things that definitely feature domesticity strongly.
Strange Practice + sequels (Vivian Shaw)
Dr Greta van Helsing is a GP in modern London with a very unusual set of patients - vampires and mummies are just the start of it. Theoretically there’s some plot and evil monks something something but this book is so relentlessly cosy and domestic that the literal Devil literally shows up for a chat to….recommend someone take a break and go on holiday. I haven’t read the sequels but I am willing to bet that they’re the same.
The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet + sequels (Becky Chambers)
A series of books in the same far-future universe about spacefarers finding their feet, on planets and off them. Again, technically contains plot but about 95% domesticity by volume. Very good.
Venetia/Frederica/Black Sheep (Georgette Heyer)
Heyer, if you’re unfamiliar, is mostly famous for her Regency romances; these three all feature very strong sibling relationships and people who like each other a lot.
Acorna (Anne McCaffrey)
Not entirely cosy and has aged unevenly, but the opening section is Three Space Miners Adopt An Alien Unicorn Baby And Learn To Parent and it’s adorable, ok?
An Unseen Attraction (K J Charles)
M/M Victorian romance between a British Asian boarding house keeper with ADHD and one of his boarders, a taxidermist. The series it starts is riffing off Victorian thrillers so there’s some murder and such but the romance is DEEPLY cosy and domestic.
The Order of the Air series (Melissa Scott and Jo Graham)
Follows a family who run an air service during the Depression, where ‘family’ is ‘a widow and her new boyfriend and her dead husband’s boyfriend and his new boyfriend and their other friend and the con artist he picks up along the way and everybody’s kids’. There’s some stuff with magic and mysteries but also lots and lots of domestic and aircraft-repair scenes, which counts as domestic when the whole family is involved.
Sorcery & Cecelia + sequels (Patricia C Wrede and Caroline Stevermer)
Epistolary YA series starring two cousins in a slighty-AU Regency England; absolutely classic.
hot take: the problem isnt the manic pixie dream girl. its the boring ass moody emotional leech guy she always gets paired with. we need more manic pixie dream characters. just give them partners who are as great as them or let them be happy alone! no more smart, beautiful, optimistic, kind girls getting paired with actual mosquitoes of men!
Also: make some manic pixie dream boys. If I wanna see romance maybe I wanna see a giddy boy full of positive energy who tells you fun facts about the constellations. Stop teaching boys they have to be moody and sad and they have to find salvation in a dream girl, this is how you breed Bad Men.
*whispers* holy shit
YESS!! I’ve always LOVED the manic pixie dream girl character. ❤️❤️❤️ One of my favorite character tropes overall.
is there anything better than a character being Incredibly Soft And Gentle with another character while still streaked with blood (theirs, perhaps, but more likely that of their enemies) and gore and dirt?? like they just fought their way across a battlefield to be with the other character and they went from Terrifying to Comforting in 0.5 seconds and the other character is Totally Okay with this while anyone else who might be watching is deeply unnerved???? the answer is no, there is nothing better
Tagged by @lioness–hart. Thank you for the tag! I’m taking a bit of a breather after a fic-producing, hmmmm, four years? So it’s nice to be still thought of as a writer.
Why do you create: My first response to fanfiction was: “You can
do that?” Since then, sometimes, fic just happens. The first one for a fandom is always meant to be a one-off. There always comes a point where I’m staring at two notebook pages of overlapping action threads, whispering ‘this was not the plan…’
What is one of your favorite works of yours (ever, or in your current
fandom): I get the most attached to
my longer stories. I’ve spent so much time in them, building them. I have an
abiding fondness for my last great Tolkien story, The Question of Pengolodh. It is what I wanted as a Tolkien fan - a ramble through Middle-Earth - time in a world of enchantment, amongst its people.
What is one of your best works (ever, or in your current fandom): Oooh. What is a BEST work? Is it a perfect short jewel of a story? Is it a longer read that becomes a journey for you and your readers together? It can be a story of your heart that never quite landed with anyone else. Or landed with one reader and changed their life.
I’ll pick from my most recent fandom, Shape of Water. For a short piece – The boyfriend. A character piece about two different people, friendship and forgiveness and – most challenging of all – senses of humor. For a long read, that sequel-style second hunt for the Asset, Deus Brânquia Is Merciful. This adventure tale for troubled times was lavished with every erg of storytelling skill I had. Plotting, characterization, description, what-you-know, imagination.
What work of yours do you wish more people experienced (ever, or in your current fandom): -wistfully- My Mad Max genfic. Sure, it’s ‘postapocalyptic’ and ‘depressing’ and ‘violent’. It’s weird and science-fiction-y. It’s also about hope in the face of all that, the world’s haunting beauty and possibilities. Wasteland, Seize My Bones. Very Max, Much Wasteland, Such Dog. One Way Ride. somebody out there. Fear and Loathing in Gastown.
What is one thing you think you do well when creating: Finishing. Strong endings. And I do okay at completing a multichapter story in a reasonable amount of time.
Hey everyone! So I haven’t really been posting lately because I overdid it with art and messed up my wrist/arm pretty badly. All of my income is from commissions, so I am unable to work for a few more weeks until my arm heals.
I put up some prints to sell so please check them out if you’re interested in my work! Some examples of prints I’m selling are below.

Check out this library! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✌🏾😊✊🏾
Read books dammit!
Back on the first floor! If you go straight ahead from the entrance you’ll enter this other lil study hall area. They got more places to chill! They got iPads and computers and shit you can use! This is a dope ass public library. If you in the KC area and wanna check out a book…bring yo ass over here! They gotchu! If yo ass need to study for a test…come park yo dumbass over here and study!
4th and final floor now. It’s more secluded than the other three floors but they got books for years in this bitch! They got little study areas for people who want to chill and be by themselves. Whatever you want! Fiction, non fiction and everything in between!
Restroom is also on the 3rd floor too! Heads up!
3rd floor now. This place is friendly for those who are homeless. They got WiFi in here! Individual tables with outlets to charge your shit! Very very quiet in here since it is a library…duh K! Caught a young dude in here going over his football highlight tape. 18 years old, doesn’t know where he’s going to school, says he plays linebacker and running back. He was blasting on his highlight tape. He said his favorite player was Marshawn Lynch, just like mine!!! Also got a lil spot to watch tv! Onto the 4th and last floor…
They have a place for kids and teens too on the second floor! It’s dope! They do say though that as an adult I couldn’t use the bathroom. They don’t want those problems! Kids was in there playing some Area 51 game? They got a spot for toddlers to chill! They got that little area like you see at the doctors office where kids can go and kill time. But kids play on iPhones and shit now tho but it’s still dope!
Taking a stroll on the second floor now! We have some artwork, some videos!
A little lounge area, a cafe, elevators and stairs for those who want them! Its legit!
This is right when you walk inside. Some punk ass dude said he was going to photo bomb me. I invited him to take a picture, but he was like nah bruh.
Here’s the front door…
I worked up damn sweat walking out here but fuck it!
I deadass walked around the wrong building but, we out here!
I’m bout to head out there and see what this is all about. ETA 16 minutes. I deadass threw on some clothes and was just like fuck it let’s go. Gotta hurry, it closes at 5!
Um…I live here, I like books (I probably have a stack of 20 to read don’t judge…) and have never heard of this library but you best believe imma be in that bitch sometime. BET!
I never thought I would need to go to Kansas City but here we are
This is not my picture- but husband just called, made me put it on video phone, and walked up and down the block to show me this amazing library and I really want to go to Kansas City now.
do you think you’d actually notice if someone didn’t cast a shadow? or if their limbs were just slightly too long? or if they had just a little too many teeth? like how many times have you passed Something on the street and you just didn’t Notice It
stay woke monsterfuckers ur love is out there!!!!!
yknow what? not my point at all in any way whatsoever, but I’m glad I could be an inspiration
…WHO WILL PLAY THIS WITH ME
Dr. Tingle just released The Tingleverse RPG and I for one cannot wait to play it.
“Pick type (human, unicorn, dinosaur, bigfoot) and trot (bad boy, charmer, sneak, true buckaroo, wizard) and ADVENTURE WITH BUDS.”
@rienerose Thanks for the tag!
Author’s Name: Tyellas on AO3 and in the Tolkien fandom, thebyrchentwigges/Byrch on Tumblr and any place else I was late in joining.
Fandoms you write for: Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion,
Discworld, Mad Max, Shape of Water, Hellboy, with occasional outliers. Fics written over an 18-year period, off and on!
Where you post: AO3 and ansereg.com.
Favorite story you wrote: If it’s a multi-chapter of mine, it’s got a special place in my heart.
Story you were nervous to post: Candy Break. Strickland is a more loathed villain than any Mad Max cannibal…
How do you choose your titles? Titles just…appear. And they’re what make the story come alive for me.
Do you outline? For a multichapter, I outline so much. Action beats. Character
development. You name it.
How many of your stories are…
*in-progress? See below.
Coming soon: Two will probably see the light of day: The Treasure of Al-Hazred, because Abe Sapien needs a heist story, and Kind Providence, a Good Omens piece.
Upcoming story you are most excited to write: I’m pleased to write these but I’m…pretty calm about it, at this moment in time? No shiny new hyperfixation at the moment, for all that I never really leave my fandoms.
all tolkien related fanfiction is deeply chaotic just in very different ways. like.
the hobbit movies fic authors: due to personal reasons, i will be ignoring everything tolkien ever said about his universe. any elf can choose to be mortal, background regardless. the valar are completely benevolent and directly involved in the affairs of middle earth in the 3rd age. thorin and bilbo are together in the afterlife. try me, bitch.
silmarillion fic authors: this is pwp but i did 8 hours of research to make sure it is canon compliant. it is based on a throwaway line from something john tolkien scribbled on the back of a receipt in 1947. every character mentioned will be dead or eternally damned within a day of this taking place. they are also distantly related and hate each other.
