This is not a pipe.
Rene Magritte was a surrealist painter and this is one of his most well-known works, The Treachery of Images. You might look at this image with it’s subtitle and say, “Yes it is.” But you’d be wrong.
The famous pipe. How people reproached me for it! And yet, could you stuff my pipe? No, it’s just a representation, is it not? So if I had written on my picture “This is a pipe”, I’d have been lying!
This is an image of a pipe, but it is not a pipe itself. You can not take this pipe and stuff it, as Magritte said. You can’t use this pipe to smoke. You can’t hold this pipe in your hand or put it in your pocket or clamp it between your teeth.
This is a piece of art depicting a pipe, which is different from being an actual pipe.
Art can be a representation of real life, but it isn’t the same thing.
