Hello! I just found your blog. Your art is so beautiful! I love the way you shade and color :D Do you have any advice on coloring?
Hey!! Thank you so much!!
Oh wow, that’s so cool to hear as I am literally just figuring out what works best for me hahaha. I don’t know if I am really the right person to ask this question, but I’ll try to explain my thought process whenever I tackle colouring and shading. I hope there’s at least something that you could take away from here.
1. Form first, details later. Sounds logical, but I used to concentrate on details first which would always lead me to flat drawings with multiple mistakes. Try to think of the form you’re trying to colour. For example, what does the forearm look like? Maybe a distorted cylinder. Then think about how would light and shadow look like on the cylinder and that’s going to give you a rough idea about how to colour & shade different parts of your body or objects.
2. Think about your source of light. For example, If the light is coming from the right side, the shadows on the objects and people will be on the left side. I used to shade things randomly, but it makes such a difference if you take a step back to analyze what’s your light source.
3. Look up colour theory if you haven’t already, I think it’s very useful to understand which values to choose for your shadows, etc., depending on your scenery or the atmosphere that you’re trying to convey through the artwork.
When I’m on twitter, I try to look at professional artists artworks to see how apply these principles. Sometimes you can take away something really cool from just observing their work.
I really hope this makes sense and will help you at least a little bit.
Have a nice day!!
