my favorite trope isn’t really “forbidden love.” it’s “strongly disapproved of love.” no one can stop the two characters from being together; it’s not illegal, but, boy howdy, nobody likes it very much.

Forbidden love required them to run away and never see their families again or risk punishment. Frowned upon love means they can invite all their haters to attend their extravagant wedding to watch them exchange personalized vows.

I think these arguments about gender socialisation would be a lot more useful if people would consider that we’re also socialised as heterosexual, and how that socialisation harms gay and bisexual kids who are subjected to it. No one with any insight into LGB experiences would claim that a gay cisgender boy experiences his socialisation the same as a straight cisgender boy until he comes out or realises he’s gay, we all know that this heterosexist, homophobic socialisation is already doing harm throughout his childhood, so why do people keep projecting cisgender notions of gender socialisation onto trans kids and making arguments that essentially boil down to “childhood experience is based on ASAB” with no regard for interiority, or for how children are brutalised into and by cisheterosexuality?
