My partner and I have been playing super mario 3d world and I’ll admit (begrudgingly) the cat suits are a LITTLE cute and def the best power up in game.
Update 3:They have edited their pinned comment on the announcement post and now referred to this as a “fan-led, original series” and that more details will be coming on Monday.
So overall, definitely temper your expectations compared to the first “new, original series” wording. Hopefully they explain exactly what it is on Monday.
UPDATE 1 with new info: The official channel has now confirmed the original series is premiering on the last day of the three-day event, so it will be on April 24th, not the 22nd.
A “new, original series” will stream exclusively on the official Avatar YouTube channel at the end of a three-day Earth Day weekend event, on April 24th
The official Avatar YouTube channel has announced a three-day “Earth Day Weekend celebration” starting on Earth Day– April 22nd, and ending April 24th with a new original series.
This 3-day event will feature earth-shattering original videos, a live stream every day, and a new, original series exclusively on this channel! It all starts on Earth Day, April 22! Get ready! Toph’s already on her way! 😱
After this, they confirmed the premiere date and availability:
It’s premiering LIVE on 4/24 and then will be available on the channel permanently after 🔥
Now……. this sounds a little too good to be true. Out of nowhere, they’re announcing a “new, original series”? I’m obviously not expecting it to be anything full-length, but even animated shorts seems like a bit of a stretch… that being said, it seems like that would be the best case scenario that’s actually in the realm of possibility.
Other voice actors that have been jumping back on the Avatar bandwagon since its newfound popularity with lots of activity and involvement have also given some potential hints, although there’s no indication these are related so take them with a grain of salt:
Olivia Hack (Ty Lee in ATLA) posted a voice recording booth on her Instagram story and said “I can’t wait to tell you guys about this project. some of you older fans are going to FREAK.” Again, no indication it’s even Avatar-related, and “older fans” is pretty vague, but it could be this.
And of course there’s Michaela Murphy (Meng and Toph Beifong in ATLA, young Suyin Beifong in TLOK) who has been very actively promoting Toph/Earth Kingdom stuff for a while now. In her Instagram story, she said “keep your eyes and feet peeled for some possible ~earth week news~ coming to you this weekend….” This would be in line with the official announcement saying “Toph’s already on her way” if that was meant to be a hint. However, Michaela Murphy also tagged her merch brand in her story, so it could be just promoting that.
Update 2: Michaela Murphy’s team has reached out to me and confirmed she’s not involved, and that her post was in fact about unrelated merch. This also makes Ty Lee’s voice actor being involved much less likely if they didn’t get Toph for Earth Day. Janet Varney I could still see being up in the air, but I’m not sure anymore at this point…
Original post continues:
Lastly, when Avatar Studios was announced, they did mention they would be working in multiple formats and mediums, including shorts, so this could be the first of those. Maybe.
So yeah, pretty tenuous connections at best. But at the same time “new, original series” would be super clickbait if it doesn’t turn out to be something pretty legit (blame them not me 😂). Voice actors making subtle hints could line up with some kind of small three-day miniseries of shorts, and that alone would be pretty cool as the first new animation content we’ve gotten in 7 years! But to keep expectations tempered, this could totally be clickbait and it turns out to be some kind of “series” on the YouTube channel where they do like “top 5 best moments!!!!!!” or something. Middle ground would be getting the voices, but they kind of just talk over old images/shots of the characters parody-style and it’s not really new story content. The point is, there are lots of directions this could go and right now it’s a pretty weird announcement.
At least we have a concrete date and it’s in less than a week, so we’ll know for sure what this is very soon! April 24th, 2021
