The most popular enclosure at Battersea Park Children’s Zoo is the meerkats because they let you scoot through an underground pipe and poke your head up in the middle. You might think they’re cute but if you stumble into their pen by mistake then you are basically dead. They will strip your skin off like a pack of piranhas until all that’s left is a pair of dry eyeballs. That’s what someone me down the pub anyway.

Photos from December last year, taken during a cold rainstorm at Battersea Park. Since I can’t go out and do winter nature exploring this year, I’m revisiting a bunch of my old photo rolls and finding some pretty nice shots.

Even without any leaves, perhaps especially without any leaves, the shapes and silhouettes of the trees are beautiful.

This time last year, I was walking around Battersea Park, admiring their beautiful collection of pines and cedars.

I had just bought a Collins British Tree guide book that I was very excited to use, and nearly froze my fingers to the pages because I couldn’t flip through it with my gloves on, so they had to come off!

I’m not particularly religious, but since many Christmas events and services have been cancelled outright this year, here’s a nature related passage on endurance for those who may find it reassuring as the pandemic persists throughout yet another holiday:

“...He shall be like a tree planted by the waterside, which will bring forth its fruit in due season. Like the tree, his leaves will not wither, and look, whatsoever he doeth, it shall prosper.” - Psalm 1:3

Hopefully next winter we can all go out and study the trees again, safely (and equipped with better gloves, perhaps).

My 2020 Photo Retrospective continues, with this photo I took at Battersea Park being one of the last photos I took before coronavirus lockdowns restricted my ability to explore my usual green spaces around London.

It was in the afternoon on a foggy day, so there were few people around and I managed to get this clear shot of a walkway that is usually relatively crowded. The fog lent a nice, almost sepia hue to the shot, which gives it a strange feeling.

Looking back on it, this ended up being the theme of the year. Empty spaces, a sense of isolation, standing in places that would usually be crowded that were devoid of other people (at least, for a while). Facing a shadowy path.

Not to sound melancholy; Despite circumstances, I enjoyed when the initial lockdown had cleared the streets. It gave a sense of safety and displaced me from the rush the city usually imposes on people; For the first time, I could hear the leaves of the beech trees rustle along the street outside my flat.

I like being alone in nature; I think it’s good to be alone in the city sometimes, too. London is a rare place where nature and the city coexist, in some places, they are the same thing. It’s ethereal, and during these “plague times”, often afforded quiet moments of beauty in what was otherwise considered by nearly all of us to be a rather bleak year.

We could probably all do with a bit of peace after the crazy year we've had, so how about a visit to the Peace Pagoda in Battersea Park? It was presented to London by the founder of the Japanese Buddhist movement (a pal of Mahatma Gandhi). He must have been quite a forgiving guy because his response to the atomic bombing of Hiroshima was to spend the next forty years building a load of peace pagodas around the world. This was one of the very last he organized before dying at the ripe old age of 100.
