Book review - A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is an enjoyable novel about the childhood and adolescence of its protagonist Francie Nolan, who as you can probably guess grows up in Brooklyn. It begins in 1912 and ends in 1918. Although the book is 493 pages long with dense, small print and not too much happens in it, I found that it went by quickly considering. Francie grows up quite poor with a father that is loving but also a drunk, and it is up to the mother and kids to provide for the family. Nonetheless, while there are some sad moments, it is not a depressing book overall even though it is grounded in realism. Brooklyn is also my favorite part of New York City and my grandfather is from there, so I liked learning about what it was like back then.
I kept comparing it in my head to The Horse of Pride by Pêr-Jakez Helias, another book I read a few months ago which takes place in roughly the same time period. It was interesting to note the similarities and differences between between a boy and girl protagonist, one who grew up as a native rural Breton peasant vs. a second generation American, one who grew up in a place very behind the times vs. one who grew up in a place very ahead of the times, and one who was rather sheltered by his family vs. one who was almost treated like a small adult in many instances.

Some thoughts while I watch Riverdale S3 and mourn the loss of Sweetpea’s Sweetpea-ness:
Can I please dedicate my life to loving Fred Andrews
Hal Cooper, he’s a serial killer, but he’s a Supportive Dad™️ who gives his daughter college pep talks
I sort of love and hate chapter forty five for Sweetpea?? Like obviously he would be shaken and really fucking terrified cause they technically killed a guy, but like I feel like the last few episodes sort of made him not feel like... Sweetpea anymore? Like yes Jughead’s Serpent King and he’s his subordinate but also it could have been such an interesting dynamic if they stuck with that but made Sweets just the teensiest bit more loud and rebellious and like himself, cause he doesn’t feel like Sweets, he feels like discount Sweetpea if his life theme song was Cobarde by Selena. Maybe I just missed something cause I’ve been zoning out a lot on these episodes and will probably have to watch most of season 3 again
GIVE KEVIN KELLER HAPPINESS 👏
Hmm okay okay the serpents are still a thing, Jug still interacts with Sweets, there’s hope (pov: you discovered a ship that you really like and quickly became attached to which carried your mental health for two straight days then realized has minimal canon backing and now you’re sad)
Uhhh jug, you kicked her out, give it a bit more effort will ya?
Ok I like the third season but for personal reasons I’m pretending only two exist thank you and good night (personal reasons being: Jughead kicking Cheryl and Toni out then being the asshole who begs them to come back, serpents are no longer badass and call me a simple bitch but I came and stayed for the badassery, sweetpea is getting more badass again but not enough, fangs was kicked out and let back in but as someone who had a sick mom and also because I simply adore fangs that did not Inspire Good Vibes, i hate the name pretty poisons as much as I love Cheryl and Toni, HAVING TO SEE KEVIN CRY WHICH SHOULD NEVER BE ALLOWED EVER, this weird ass cult that just is no, Alice is no longer good mother milf and sent Betts to sisters of quiet mercy and is also joining a SEPARATE cult from the one at hand that bears disturbing resemblance to a combination hippy commune/Christian evangelist group which should sound impossible but at this point why the fuck not, Joaquin dies and is not pure which is no, I hate that jellybean is manipulated by Gladys, I like the version of Gladys that’s decent but also I hate her it’s very complicated, getting closer to a Fred Andrews/Luke Perry dying off which should never be allowed ever, FP’s a fucking sheriff which yay his life’s together but also no he’s a fucking cop and works for a system which the serpents say “oh he-e-e-e-ll no-o” to, or at least they would if they still existed, Hiram’s existence, I have to actually care about this batshit plot, and I could go on but yeah enjoy this extensive list)
Ok a couple pros to season three after so much negativity: the throwback episode where I melted into a bisexual puddle, fp’s hot and there for his son, I got a single moment of serotonin when Kevin and Moose were readying to be publicly dating, Josie is wonderful, wedding blessings for Sierra and Tom! For a moment Archie got rid of that awful red dye job and was a brunette, the great Jarchie elopement of who-the-fuck-knows cause it’s an anachronistic timeline, Veronica’s singing, a visualization of the Fred Heads and young FP/Jughead playing the drums, the fredsythe streaking interlude, young Alice, that’s it i think.
Me: Ah ha! Sweetpea is sitting on Jug’s counter in a relaxed manner near him and it would only take two steps for jug to walk over and rest a comforting hand on his knee to initiate fluff, my ship is slowly reviving
She was the books she read in the library. She was the flower in the brown bowl. Part of her life was made from the tree growing rankly in the yard. She was the bitter quarrels she had with her brother whom she loved dearly. . . . She was the shame of her father stumbling home drunk. She was all of these things and of something more. . . . It was what God or whatever is His equivalent puts into each soul that is given life — the one different thing such as that which makes no two fingerprints on the face of the earth alike.
BETTY SMITH, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
I need someone. I need to hold somebody close. And I need more than this holding. I need someone to understand how I feel at a time like now. And the understanding must be part of the holding.

Archie Jumbo Comics #309, cover by Pat and Tim Kennedy (pencils) and Bob Smith (inks)
Glen, in this moment:
I took Bella out on another night out, since she’s a romance sim and all, but she hasn’t met anyone too interesting. Honestly, the most attractive prospects are Don and Daniel but she is trying to be a woman of principles, thank you very much.
It was nice to see Betty and Cleo catching up, since Betty and her auntie are married now. And it looks like Johnny and Buck are having a heart to heart about college, which was also pretty cute.
Andy, you’re gonna be my real brother!
And here we are. The episode where Jack & Sarah announce they are adopting Andy and he becomes Robert’s real brother to Robert’s happiness (and we all know how happy he was with brother and favored son Andy in the future). So let’s get to it.
Scene 1: Dooley informs Jack & Sarah and Andy will be staying with them. And the school was spoken too as well, and ‘all the teachers are going to go the extra mile making sure that Andy catches up with his lessons.’ Dooley also comments ‘If it hadn’t been for your dedication things could have turned out very differently.
Sarah: Oh Jack, this is everything that we’ve hoped for.
Jack: Certainly a relief after all the months of worry.
Sarah: So, when should we tell Andy?
Dooley: Well it’s up to you. It’s a family matter now.
Scene 2: The Sugdens are acting all casual when Andy arrives home. When he asks about tea, Robert says they aren’t haven’t any. From there, it gradual comes out they are all going out to celebrate... they are going to be adopting him! Great, fantastic! (just seeing how happy Robert was at this point and knowing how things turn out...). The clip includes much of scene 3.
Robert: Andy, you’re gonna be my real brother!
Victoria: And mine.
Sarah: We’re gonna adopt you, Andy.
Jack: Eh, if that’s all right with you, that is?...
Andy: Andy Sugden.
Robert: Andy & Robert Sugden.
Andy: The Sugden boys!
Scene 3: The Sugdens are at Kathy’s with Marlon and Kathy making of show of presenting their food to each of them. In the back, Betty is working on a cake that is decorated with ‘Andy Sugden’ on the top. There are no candles so Betty dashes off to the post office. The celebration is on the house, per Kathy.
Robert: This is great. Can we come here every night?
Jack: Yeah, course you can. Just as soon as you’re earning enough to pay for it yourself.
Scene 4: At the post, Betty unfortunately mentions the Sugdens celebrating Andy being adopted by them. Viv, as expected, goes on a rant when Betty goes on how ‘they’ve been through a lot lately.’ Also as expected, her tirade leads her to take off to Kathy’s.
Viv: What about us? Thanks to them, this child has no father and I have no husband and you got the nerve to come in here and talk about the Sugdens having been through a lot well we’re going through a lot more here... Spoil? That Andy Hopwood helped MURDER my husband. Those Sugdens aren’t FIT to look after the animals on their farm. They’ve ruined our lives and now the whole village is OUT celebrating. 🙄 (good god... she’s exhausting just listening to her rant.)
Scene 5: Back at Kathy’s continue their celebration (with a card trick performed by Marlon/Kathy) until Viv (then Donna) show up to continue her rant about ‘monster’ Andy getting away with what’s happened (‘So don’t think changing your name is going to help. You’ll always be a HOPWOOD’). Sarah wants Viv to leave Andy alone since ‘he’s done nothing wrong.’ As Viv continues to rant, Donna can’t take it anymore and fesses up about knowing Billy was around.
Viv: ...Nobody else knew where he was!
Donna: That’s not true. Andy wasn’t the only one who knew. Andy told me.
Viv: Oh, don’t be RIDICULOUS, Donna!
Sarah: It’s true, Viv.
Donna: Andy told me about his dad. I knew he was here.
Chapter Eighty Six: The Pincushion Man
i can’t believe penelope and alice were almost in-laws, first through jason and polly, and then through charles and chic. fate is truly keeping them apart in that regard, but they do still share grandchildren and both slept with hal and took care of polly, chic, and dagwood/jason jr. at different points of their lives. queens of keeping it in the family <3 we were robbed of seeing them all under one roof for the chicles wedding.
for a moment there i really thought Betty was going to team up with Charles (and Chic) against Glen and I understand why they didn't do that but at the same time I feel ROBBED
Archie Doodle Draft Dump a lot of stuff for March, so here's the context for the art. (order is how old it is, the last two are from yesterday.)
1. Concept Sketches for Maria Rodriguez and Claude & Raoul Hopper.
2. Me wanting to draw my queen Damina Spellman
3. Josie and the Coolcats
4. Sabrina and the cooler Sabrina (I wanted to draw Brina and Demina in similar outfits)
5. More concept sketches: Chloe Mancus and a better Pepper Smith.
6. Reggie in a skirt because everyone needs to see that once in their life.
7. Cheryl wearing new The Archie's merch.
8. Soft Beronica cuddles.
9. Lighting practice with Cheryl and Sugar.
10. Veronica's cousins as I felt like I wanted to draw them to match my Veronica, if you are wondering Veronica is Hispanic (Dad) and Russian (Mom) then these two have the same ethnicity as what side they are on. So Harper is Hispanic (Dad) and Indian (Mom) and Marcy is Russian (Mom) and Irish (Dad)
(Harpers standing in the void so that's how she's standing)
So I’ve just seen the promo pics from 5x10 and one of them caught my eye. This one:
Is it just me or does the banner on the window behind them say Happy Birthday?
It it does, which it does look like it to me, could it be that its the twins birthday? If it is that would be really sad because their mum is still missing, potentially dead. But another reason why I think it might be the twins birthday is this picture:
This person here to me looks like it could be Cheryl. Betty and Alice are wearing different clothes so I don’t think its the birthday celebration but maybe Cheryl has come over to help plan the party or something else related to the twins birthday?
Also I feel like the top picture is the scene where they get their unexpected visitors which I think most people have guessed as being Chic and Charles. I could legit see Charles rocking up and claiming he’s there for his niece and nephew’s birthday and asking where the cake is. (Does he know when the twins’ birthday is?) Yeah don’t know where I’m going with this post but I just noticed that so figured I’d share it all with you.
