Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez was not quite what I was expecting. BUT it was still a good book! I started out reading the paperback copy I bought of this book but ended up listening to the rest of it while I worked on packing more of my stuff to be able to move next month.
Florentino Ariza and Fermina Daza fall in love when they’re teenagers. A few years later, Fermina chooses to marry a doctor from a wealthy, well-to-do family instead of Florentino like they had planned. 51 years later, Florentino attends Fermina’s husband’s funeral and declares his love for Fermina again. Although they’re much older and Fermina is still reluctant, they pursue this love that never left them.
This was a touching book. The story didn’t go quite as I was expecting it to, but it was still a good read/listen. I didn’t really relate to any of these characters, which I think made it a little harder for me to get into the story in the first place. But it is still well-written, well thought out, and most definitely worth the 4 stars I gave it on Goodreads! I can see why so many people would consider this a classic!
