  • Got thinking about how the meaning of the line, “who are you, that look so terrible?” In Doctor Faustus has been obscured over centuries of language change, and how the only way of rectifying this is to do a production with a very camp Faustus who, on first seeing Lucifer, instead says “who are you, that look so terrific?”

(Che non è detto ricorderei, but still).

  • Just found out that everyone in the world except germany apparently reads a different version of doctor faustus made in the 17th century where doctor faustus is actually just in pursuit of knowledge and doesnt use the deal with mephisto to make himself younger to date a 14 year old and ruin her entire life. fucked up!

  • The thing is.

There is this bit with Mephistophilis right before Faustus is dragged to Hell ..

FAUSTUS. O thou bewitching fiend, ‘twas thy temptation/ Hath robb’d me of eternal happiness

MEPHIST. I do confess it, Faustus, and rejoice: / 'Twas I that, when thou wert i'the way to heaven,/ Damm’d up thy passage; when thou took'st the book / To view the Scriptures, then I turn’d the leaves, / And led thine eye. What, weep'st thou? 'tis too late; despair!

It bugged me. Both when I read the text and watched the Globe production. And I see it now : Mephistophilis is mean to Faustus. He mocks him. Which wasn’t his thing before. Like at all. He was sassy but never mean.

    And it doesn’t make sense.

Because he is still under his command technically. He isn’t free until Faustus gets to Hell. So what’s the point to be that mean now??

But then there is the last line Mephistophilis gives to Faustus before Hell opens and the doctor becomes desperate:

what else my Faustus shall desire, / Shall be perform’d in twinkling of an eye

Because he is a very convenient devil. He does whatever Faustus asks. ( “ Faustus, I will” Etc)

And right before Faustus goes to Hell, the doctor blames Mephistophilis.

He blames him for his fall. For his damnation.

And Mephistophilis is such a good devil that HE ACTS LIKE FAUSTUS WANTS.

He acts as if he tempted him.

ALTHOUGH EVERYONE KNOWS THAT HE DIDN’T NEED TO DO SHIT.BECAUSE FAUSTUS WAS THAT BAD ALREADY.

And why ???? Because that’s what Faustus needs. He needs to know that he isn’t responsible. He needs that hate for Mephistophilis, he needs to have someone else to blame when in Hell.

Because Mephistophilis knows how bad it feels to know you’re in the wrong and to face your mistakes.

  • In this book Cap returns to Skull house, and while there Faustus fucks with him a whole bunch… but the real crazy parts come from the Red Skull’s ghost showing up and choking him out at the end… which would tell us that Reddy is really truly dead but I’ll believe that when I see it… also that Faustus bites it but he doesn’t so… I dunno…
