daffodils - pressed flower series - ninerose excerpt

The sky darkened slowly, temperature dropping. Rose was still warm under the borrowed leather jacket, but standing so close, she felt it when the Doctor stiffened slightly. She smiled. So, he had been fibbing a bit after all.

“Doctor.” She said, and made it sound just enough like a tease to make him look at her with a raised brow, “Are you cold?”

    He scoffed, “No.”

She grinned, trailed up an arm over the hand he’d slung over her shoulder. Lightly, her fingers danced across the back of his hand, then moved up under the sleeve of his jumper, making goosebumps rise across his forearm, “You sure?”

He glared at her halfheartedly, but didn't bother to shake her away, “Stop that.”

“Your fingers are like ice.” She observed.

He shrugged, “I have a naturally lower body temperature. I’m always cool to touch.”

“Well, I suppose you are fine then.” She huffed and turned her face away, though she watched him from the corner of her eyes as she continued, “and here I had been hoping we could cuddle to conserve body heat.”

There was silence for one long moment,

    “Yes, Doctor?”

“Think I might be a little chilly after all.”

    Tegan seems cool

Her introduction felt very New Who-y to me (Russel T Davies in particular). Like you get introduced to this normal person with her family member and they have a really natural and funny relationship. They’re just mildly arguing about cars.

Then on Logopolis I liked when she was like to the Monitor “in Brisbane they call that a sweatshop”, it isn’t much but it gave me Rose Tyler vibes which is always cool.

Of course since it’s actually Classic Who her family member gets killed off (ala Vicki, Victoria, possibly Jamie, Leela, Adric and Nyssa just one story prior). Which is a shame tbh because I liked her Aunt Vanessa in her all too brief screen time.

Not sure when I’ll get to watch more of her because my partner is going back to uni in a few days and we’ve been watching Classic Who together for the past year or so.

Find the Doctor was good idea for something to keep fans busy during the hiatus, even if it was poorly planned and ultimately unrewarding, but as a piece of promotion it was a terrible idea. It was just far too insular, only appealing to the most dedicated fans (and even many of them soon grew tired of it and gave up).

#Doctor Who#DW #it is another example of this era being a bit hopeless at promotion #by not really knowing how to appeal to a wider audience #it feels like the just take the show's place in our culture for granted #and do anything more than just remind people that it exists

    Dalek Hot Take

Every single 1960s Dalek story is better than every single 1970s Dalek story.

#doctor who#classic who#first doctor#second doctor#third doctor#fourth doctor#daleks #power of the daleks is the best #death to the daleks is probably the worst #but genesis and destiny were also prettt bad #day of the daleks is the best 70s one but it’s not a good *Dalek* story #invasion of earth is the worst 60s one #and it’s still pretty good #a solid 7/10 #davros ruined the daleks mystique #they didn’t need a backstory #the brief explanation in the first story was sufficient

Hm, Keeper of Traken and Logopolis were actually pretty good. Wasn’t a huge fan of most of Season 18 but the last two were enjoyable.

Funny how they’re the two without Romana (I love Romana but there are points I could tell Lalla Ward and Tom Baker were pissed off with each other).

Honestly even though I am glad to be finished with Tom Baker’s stuff I really liked Four and Adric’s dynamic — a snarky mentor and mentee vibe. And I even liked how Nyssa and Tegan worked with him as well. Pity there’s no really viable way to have more Four with Nyssa and Tegan stuff.

If more of Tom Baker’s stories had been a good as these then I would have liked his era more. Like I took a four month break from his stuff because I got burnt out from it. Which I suppose you could argue is because of how many stories he has but I do feel it was more a quality issue than a quantity issue. Like I really enjoyed Shada and that was near the end of when I first took a break.

Sometimes I think there’s something wrong with me because I’m not a massive fan of Tom Baker’s stuff on the whole. And it’s a consistent thing too, like I find the Hinchcliffe stuff and the Williams stuff on par with each other on average.

This is a bit rambly but just my thoughts I guess

    Act Normal

Request: Can you do something with the {11th}Doctor where you get injured badly, but can't let him find out because you're both busy saving a planet and don't want him to get distracted please? Totally okay if you don't want to, I know it's a big ask. If you can, thanks! : )

    WC: 1.6K

A/N: Oh I was so close to making this an unhappy ending, I was so very close but I didn’t. Enjoy :)

Don’t wince. Don’t breathe heavy. Don’t let him know.

    Act normal.

    You can do this.

You can do this. Just run. Run as fast as you can and don’t think about the pain.

But oh, it hurt so much.

“Y/N!” The Doctor’s voice echoes from the front of the group of people you’ve managed to save today and in the process, get hurt. “Y/N, where are you?”

“I’m here, Doctor! Just keep going!” You call out and pray your voice hadn’t strained too much in agony for the Doctor to notice but then his face you’ve managed to find amongst the crowd turns a corner and you clench your eyes closed and try to steady yourself on the wall. It burns under your touch, or rather your skin burned- no, it was the pain. The pain in your abdomen spread everywhere in your body like a fire and you double over, groaning as quietly as you can before you push off and tumble after the group. They weren’t far in front of you yet thankfully far enough not to notice the sheen layer of sweat fall above your brows that you wipe away. A deep breath pulls you forward and you hold your stomach as you run. When your shirt dampens from the spreading blood, you thank everything that you wore something dark, something hopefully the Doctor won’t realize is stained.

One last corner and you’re out of the building, you remember this hall but… had it always been this long and wobbly?

“Everyone! Outside!” The Doctor instructs as you finally catch up to the group who were slowly- well, as fast as they could, but still slowly pushing through the door to outside and their safety. The Doctor’s eyes find yours and you force yourself to look fine, to be fine. You couldn’t let the Doctor get distracted by your injury. You’ve worked hard today to save these people and you wouldn’t let it be sidetracked by taking care of the injuries you’ve gotten.

He sighs in relief as he holds the doors open and puts a hand on your back and though his touch dances on your skin, he feels so far away.

    Act normal.

Don’t wince. Don’t breathe heavy. Don’t let him know.

    Act normal.

    You can do this.

The sight of the TARDIS makes your knees buckle out of joy and relief before the building behind you rumbles.

“Doctor, what’s happening?” A woman next to you asks as you peer over your shoulder to see the Doctor’s furrowed brows as he watches the building.

You weren’t a genius but you knew when a building was going to fall. “Everyone take cover!” Your strangled voice rips out before the Doctor was ushering you to the ground, throwing his upper body over your crouching one, very mindful of the tearing of skin that caused your vision to blur. The building fell, debris dust covering you all and you hadn’t any clue. All you could focus on was how hard breathing really became.

    You were tired, exhausted,

The Doctor jumps up first, looking over everyone as he reaches a hand down to you. “Is everyone okay?” He calls out, hearing sounds of relief from several people as they nod.

“Yeah.” Someone speaks up but you can’t tell who. “Yeah we’re fine. We’re all fine.”

You take the Doctor’s hand, using all the fleeting strength you have to pull yourself up. The Doctors attention moves to you as he helps you up.

“Are you okay, Doctor?” You ask before he can and the Doctor tries to study your face when you’re finally on your feet. He knows something was wrong with you, but he doesn’t know what. He nods, opening his mouth to return the question but you beat him once again. “Great. I’m not.” Your shirt sticks your now crimson covered skin and you let out a low groan and pull it up, finally showing him the scratches you’ve received at the claws of the currently deceased alien. The Doctor gasps and you can only see his eyes widen before your knees buckle. He races to catch you, cradling you against him while he’s on his knees, hovering above you.

The Doctor panics. “Y/N! Please, Y/N, come on.” He shouts, cupping your cheek and holding you close. You look at him, meeting his eyes and the Doctor thinks he sees a smile on your lips before your head falls backwards.

You smile at him, of course you do. The last thing you see before the pain causes you to pass out was your Doctor. If this was the end for you, after everything, he was the sight to smile at.

That was a breath you just took, and it was easy. Well, not as easy as ever but there was no pain, no strain, almost like you were alright.

    You were alive.

Your lips part as you take a deeper breath, finding yourself mumbling before you could even think. “Doctor.” It almost sounds like but you weren’t sure.

“I’m here. I’m here, Y/N.” His voice sounded muddled but you turn your head in its direction and let your eyes finally open. His smile, full of worry and relief, was the first thing you see.

    “Hello.” You croak out.

He squeezes your hand and you didn’t even know he was holding it. “Hello?” He asks and shakes his head. “You get injured, pass out, make me carry your unconscious body to the TARDIS, and the first thing you can say is hello?”

He had gotten up out of the chair he was sat in, gently pacing next to you and switching the hand holding yours every time he turned.

You can only watch him, the corners of your lips tugging upwards when he stops and looks down at you. “Hello, Doctor?” Your scratched voice makes the Doctor frown and collapse in the chair next to you, holding your hand as tight as he could without hurting you. You clear your throat. “How long was I out for?”

“Too long.” He mumbles and you have to roll your eyes.

“So what, like an hour?” You joke, knowing how often the Doctor goes looking for you anywhere you go because you’ve been gone for too long.

He doesn’t laugh like you think he would, not even an amused smile. Instead his face falls. “A week.”

Your face falls as well. “A week?” You question and he nods. “No, that’s not possible. How was it a week? It was just a few scratches.”

He reaches across from you, showing you a small and almost empty vial with blue liquid. “Their claws release a poison when they scratch their enemy.” He shakes the vial and you gulp. “If you would’ve waited any longer for the antidote, you’d be dead.”

Silence settles between the two of you as you stare at the ceiling, gently touching the bandage wrapped around your stomach. The Doctor took care of you all by himself and if it wasn’t for you waiting to tell him, maybe it would’ve made his job easier.

“Thank you for saving me, Doctor.” You whisper, meeting his green eyes holding a sorrow you hadn’t seen a moment ago.

“Why didn’t you tell me when it happened?” He voice almost cracks and you clutch his hand tighter, offering the softest smile you can muster.

“We had to get the people out. I didn’t want to distract you.”

He places his hand upon your shoulder, trying to get you to pay close attention to his next words. “Telling me you’re injured is not distracting me. Do you understand that?”

    You can only nod.

He runs his hand over your hair gently, catching your smile growing once again and he doesn’t hold back his own. “Why don’t you get some rest? You still have quite a ways to recovery and it’s going to hurt. A lot.”

As if on cue, your stomach felt like it had been kicked as you double over and clutch yourself through the bandage. The Doctor shhh’s your paining groans and hugs you tightly. “You’re okay. You’re okay.” He assures you and in a second, just like that, the pains gone. You huff, and sit back in the bed, no longer laying down and no longer in his hold.

“I didn’t like that.” You admit and the Doctor gives you a knowing look.

“Then next time tell me when you’re hurt and maybe we can save us both some time and pain.”

You don’t ask him what pain he had gone through but the look on his face told you that he went through more emotional pain in this last week than you had imagined. The Doctor came in here every day for a week, hours upon hours just to make sure you were okay and still here.

“Thank you Doctor.” You say needlessly and he nods, pulling the blankets up around you and you scoot around to lay back down.

“Get some rest.” He whispers to you, leaning down to kiss your forehead when you close your eyes. The Doctor slowly walks to the door, keeping his footsteps as quiet as he can until he reaches the door and looks back over his shoulder. You were still smiling at him from across the room and as the Doctor turns the light off, bathing you both in a darkness, his lips turn up and he repeats the one phrase that’s been running through his brain all week.

    She’ll be okay.

Speaking of the Doctor always apologizing, I personally thinks it’s a crime that Rose never told the Doctor she was sorry that she couldn’t be with him forever. She kept saying she wouldn’t leave him and wouldn’t let him be alone, and when they’re forced apart there’s no “I’m sorry I had to leave you” or “I’m sorry I can’t be with you” ???? Something to that effect!!!

    No I’m not crying.
