    Williams, Tiripano frustrate Afghanistan

A fourth Test century from skipper Sean Williams and a maiden half-century from Donald Tiripano helped Zimbabwe frustrate Afghanistan in the second Test match in Abu Dhabi. Destined for an innings defeat at one stage, Zimbabwe staged a strong comeback to erase the deficit and fetch a eight-run lead by stumps on day 4 with the pair of Williams and Tiripano still undefeated.

Zimbabwe did make a decent start to the day with the openers continuing to bat in cautious fashion having already batted out 13 overs by the end of day 3. Kevin Kasuza and Prince Masvaure already put on 91 for the opening wicket in the first innings and just when it appeared they might replicate it, Javed Ahmadi made the vital breakthrough in an unlikely fashion. A full toss was hit straight back at the bowler by Masvaure. Kasuza followed suit in the next over edging Rashid Khan to the slip fielder.

Even though Williams and Tarisai Musakanda ensured there was no further damage until the lunch break, Afghanistan ran through the middle order in the second session. Rashid's googly ended Musakanda's 67-ball stay and Wesley Madhevere registered another duck when he edged Sayed Shirzad behind in the following over.

The double blow brought together Zimbabwe's most trustworthy pair out in the middle. Sikandar Raza began his innings in stunning fashion with two sixes in two overs off Rashid with Williams helping himself to a half-century at the other end. Raza then smacked Rashid for a six for the third time but it was the legspinner who had the last laugh as the batsman edged him to second slip. The wicket turned out to be a killer blow for the batting side as Rashid also picked up Ryan Burl and Regis Chakabva for ducks to complete his five-fer.

The result appeared to be a foregone conclusion at that point in time with Zimbabwe still trailing Afghanistan by 116 runs. However, Williams and Tiripano not only saw their side through to the Tea break, they continued to battle it out in the final session as well. Afghanistan were particularly left frustrated with Tiripano constantly fetching boundaries and eating into the deficit. The tailender had never gone past fifty in his Test career before this game and he did give Afghanistan an opportunity when he was batting on 33 which was fluffed. The wicketkeeper failed to collect the ball when Tiripano missed one while attempting a slog off Amir Hamza.

Even the new ball didn't have an effect as the boundaries kept flowing for Tiripano, who reached the landmark off 115 balls with a boundary straight over Rashid's head. Towards the fag end of the day, it was Williams' turn to pile on the agony as he too survived a drop chance enroute to his century. If these two go on to bat an entire session out one more time on the final day, Afghanistan could find themselves in trouble.Learn more.
