"As tough as she tried to appear on the outside, inside she was a very insecure little girl. That I could understand, and it made me love her even more. I felt I had to protect her. I thought she was drinking too much. I also begged her to stop smoking. She liked having someone worry about her, someone to tell her she was being a bad little girl, but it had little effect. Once, just to defy me, she lit a cigarette, took a pill, and had a drink. So I had to learn to live with Elizabeth the way she was and felt I had to be with her, always, to watch her, to hold her, to reassure her if she woke up in the middle of the night."

Katharine Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor in Suddenly, Last Summer (1959)

"Elizabeth saw it as an opportunity to "chew up the scenery", as she said, and to work with people she admired. Hepburn did not return her admiration. There were no fights or arguments, but Hepburn was very cool and distant; she and Elizabeth hardly spoke to each other on the set, and we never met her socially. Elizabeth remembered that Hepburn had snubbed her years earlier in the MGM commissary when she got the lead in National Velvet, a property that had originally been acquired for Hepburn years before. The picture made Elizabeth a star. Perhaps Hepburn was still jealous of Elizabeth, who was young and newly married, while she was growing older. She often spoke of Spencer Tracy. "Spence is coming over next weekend," she would tell us, or the week following, or the week after that. He never came. But Hepburn did not let jealousy or anything else stand in the way of her work. She was totally professional, punctual to the minute -- a vivid contrast to Elizabeth, who was almost never on time. Also unlike Elizabeth, Hepburn didn't give a damn how she looked off the set and usually wore the same pair of baggy old gabardine pants. But on the set, every detail of her costume and appearance was important, and she always walked out in front of the cameras breathing fire. She was brilliant... But as different as his leading ladies were, Elizabeth, too, was an actress. Not even Hepburn could overpower her perfomance in the film and I think she came to respect that. Sometime later Hepburn called me to ask if I didn't think it would be a good idea to star Elizabeth with Spencer Tracy in a film version of Thornton Wilder's The Skin of Our Teeth, which she and I would coproduce. I regret now that I turned down her proposal."

"Nathalie and Alain seemed happy to me. They argued and fought a lot, just like any man and wife, but as far as I knew, their relationship was a very good one, although Alain once told me, "I can't be married, Eddie. I must have at least six different women in my life."

"I wanted to be Santa Claus, Daddy Warbucks, Prince Charming, everyone and everything for Elizabeth, just as she was everyone and everything for me. We were drugged with love. Our sexual relationship was perfect, and a lot of our time together was spent in bed. We weren't always making love; we talked endlessly, listened to music. I went on a poetry binge and read Elizabeth every love poem I could find. I felt she needed me, desperately. I was a father, a brother, a friend, a lover. She was a baby I held and rocked in my arms, a girl, a woman -- all the things I needed. And we were  very selfish about our love. The rest of the world could go to hell, as long as we were together."

"I loved buying things for Elizabeth; she was always so delighted and surprised, no matter what it was. The most expensive presents were jewels: an emerald wedding ring, the first gift I ever gave her, a diamond bracelet, an evening bag with "Liz" spelled out in 27 diamonds for her 27th birthday. I bought black pearls, rubies -- whatever caught my eye -- and little charms for a bracelet she had: the NBC peacock in gold and different-colored stones; a platinum Michelob bottle, her favorite beer; a Dom Perignon bottle of platinum and emeralds. Eventually that bracelet weighed about 40 pounds; it was ridiculous, but she wore it.

I went on sprees to buy her clothes -- sweaters, slacks, blouses, bathing suits -- all from the most expensive shops from Beverly Hills. Elizabeth had a rather unusual figure, so whenever I found something that fit her, I bought out the whole line. A dozen pairs of matching silk pajamas were custom made for us by Yvel  -- Levy spelled backward -- my own shirtmaker, and on one visit to the shop of the famous Juel Park, I bought at least $35,000 worth of handmade silk lingerie. Pedigreed puppies, cats, a monkey, toys for her children -- I threw gifts at Elizabeth and she gave me things in return, some silly and sentimental, some expensive and beautiful: A Cartier watch inscribed "When Time Began", her first gift; a Piaget platinum watch inscribed "You ain't seen nothin' yet"; diamond-and-emerald cuff links for dress; heart-shaped cabochon emerald-and-gold cuff links inscribed "E & E" for ordinary wear. It was Christmas every day."

"Audrey Hepburn was playing on Broadway in Ondine, and after seeing the show one night, I fell hopelessly in love with everything about her. The next day I sat down and wrote her a letter, printing it out carefully like a schoolboy and sending it to her with some flowers. I have no idea what I said -- something about being her number one fan, hoping she would suggest we meet. But all I received in return was a very formal and ladylike thank you note. Years later we did become dear friends, and at the premiere of My Fair Lady, when Audrey already suspected she would not win an Academy Award for her perfomance because everyone felt that Julie Andrews should have been given the part, she turned to me with tears in her eyes and said, "Are you still my number one fan?"

Marlene Dietrich and Eddie Fisher at El Morocco club, New York, 1953

"Marlene was 55 and I was 25, but to me everything about her was youthful -- her face, her figure, the way she spoke, the way she moved... I went to her Park Avenue apartment, which was furnished in perfect taste, and came as a very pleasant surprise to someone accustomed to living in hotel suites. We were alone and Marlene was dressed in a beautiful and very revealing beige gown. She asked me to open a bottle of wine, we drank and then she disappeared into the kitchen to prepare supper. She served it herself and we ate by candlelight. She was the sophisticated older woman and I was the inexperienced boy, just like in one of her own movies, and I was both excited and a little scared. But Marlene knew how to make me feel like a man. After dinner she sat at my feet and we talked about our lives, about love. The ceiling of her bedroom was mirrored, which was also a surprise. And that night, I discovered the aura of glamour and mystery that always surrounded Marlene was not a trick or an illusion. Her beauty, her charm, her humor, her generosity were real... She was a marvelous conversationalist, a very warm and unselfish woman who knew how to enjoy life. She was life. The nights I left her to go back to the Essex House, I was walking on air. She was the most stimulating woman I had ever met."

    Tinker: We’re playing Scrabble. It’s a nightmare.

    Dot: Scrabble? Scrabble’s great.

Tinker: Not when you’re playing with Jane, it’s not. She puts words like “ephemeral”. And I put “dog”.
