  • Covid vaccine malfunctioning, more than 1,000 shots wasted in Japan

More than 1,000 shots of coronavirus vaccine went to waste in Japan after storage temperatures deviated from a required range due to a freezer malfunction, the health ministry said on Monday, the country’s first such case of wasted vaccines.

Japan became the last member of the Group of Seven leading industrialised nations to begin its vaccination drive against COVID-19 on Feb 17.

It has so far received three shipments of vaccine developed by Pfizer Inc and BioNTech, comprising around 1.4 million shots.

The Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine has to be stored at a temperature of around minus 75 Celsius (minus 103 Fahrenheit).

A medical institution reported that the freezer malfunction had occurred over the weekend, rendering 172 vials of the vaccine, or 1,032 doses, useless, the ministry said.

It declined to identify the name of the medical institution or the manufacturer of the freezer in question, but said the freezer maker would start looking into the cause of the malfunction.

  • Weigh in: 211.2 lbs

Down: 7.4 lbs and .2lbs since yesterday

    106.2lbs to go

I lost .2lbs since yesterday which I expected considering I lost several prior to yesterday. I expect to drop more tomorrow, maybe .6-1lb. Today I’m allowing this Burger King iced coffee and it’s very good.

    image

Best iced coffees from fast food restaurants in my opinion:

-Sonic. Holy cow you can get a RT 44 iced coffee from there and add in flavorings if you want. So much coffee. Lasts all day and gives energy. High calorie for all that coffee but if it’s a treat and the only thing you’re having on a liquid plan it’s under 500 calories.

-Jack In The Box. Caramel iced coffee from there taste so good. Tastes better than Sonics but you can’t get 44oz of it haha.

-Burger King. This one tastes really good and I may have them more often.

-Taco Bell. This is because their iced coffee is around 10 calories if I recall correctly, and you can customize it with your own sugar free sweeteners and creamers. Most low calorie iced coffee out that I’ve seen which is nice for lower calorie days. I have to try iced coffee from other places now :)

This is the only “treat drink” I’m allowing today and is more of a special thing. Tomorrow I’ll stick to zero calorie drinks to compensate. Aside from this I can have tea, black coffee, and up to 2 diet sodas. Then water and my supplements of course. Pleased with how my face is slowly depuffing and my collarbones feel a tad more prominent. My ring on my right hand is feeling more loose.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has established a telephone helpline and constituted a vigilance committee to stop electoral malpractices in the Senate elections to be held on Wednesday (tomorrow)

The vigilance committee members include officials of ECL, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA).

The committee has been tasked to provide necessary information and records to the ECP, as well as present a report if an inquiry is required to be conducted.

A telephone helpline was established where the citizens could register complaints at 051-8848888.

The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) also made contacts with the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) director-general, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and NADRA chairpersons to seek recommendations for stopping the electoral malpractices in the Upper House polls.

Moreover, a management system was also established to collect complaints by the election commission besides the establishment of a special monitoring cell which will be made functional for 24 hours for looking over the electoral process by the CEC.

Earlier in the day, the ECP said that the Senate elections slated for March 3 (tomorrow) will be held through secret ballot as per the “past practice”.

An ECP meeting with Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja in the chair deliberated the SC opinion and decided to implement it in letter and spirit, according to a statement.

“The Commission is taking all possible steps and measures to fulfill its constitutional duty to check that corrupt practices in the Senate Elections are guarded against,” the ECP said.

“The Commission also decided that due to time constrain, ensuing Senate Election scheduled for 3rd March, 2021 will be conducted as provided in the Constitution and Law as per past practice.”

The ECP decision came a day after the Supreme Court gave its opinion on the presidential reference, ruling that the elections for the upper house of Parliament have to be conducted through secret ballot as required under the Constitution.

  • Demolation of lawyers chambers

The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to demolish illegal chambers of lawyers built on the Football Ground, footpaths and greenbelts in Islamabad

Headed by Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed, an apex court bench upheld the Islamabad High Court’s (IHC) verdict and turned down lawyers’ plea to stay the demolition until an alternative place is provided for their chambers.

Over the course of the hearing, the chief justice asked on what basis should the court halt demolition of the illegal chambers. “Lawyers have no claim on the football ground. Those who want to practice [law] should have their offices built somewhere else,” he remarked.

A lawyer said that several courts are also built on the ground, to which the chief justice ordered that these courts should also been pulled down.

Justice Gulzar offered to give lawyers two months’ time to vacate the ground. However, advocate Hamid Khan said that the demolition be halted until they move to a new high court building.

At the previous hearing, the SC had restrained the CDA from demolishing the illegal chambers. The lawyers had expressed willingness to submit an undertaking to vacate the land once construction of the lawyers’ complex was completed.

  • Senate Elections will be held on 03march as per Constitution

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday said that the upcoming Senate elections, scheduled to be held on March 3, would be “conducted as provided in the Constitution and law as per past practice”

In a statement, the ECP said the decision had been taken due to “time constraints”. A meeting of the Election Commission was held under the chairmanship of the Chief Election Commissioner Sikander Sultan Raja and was attended by its members — retired justice Altaf Ibrahim Qureshi, retired Justice Irshad Qaiser, Shah Mohammad Jatoi and Nisar Ahmed Durrani.

According to the statement, the meeting was held on March 1, the same day the Supreme Court shared its opinion on the presidential reference, saying that polls for the upper house of parliament will be held through secret ballot, according to Article 226 of the Constitution.

The meeting discussed the SC’s short order, deciding to “implement it in letter and spirit”. The apex court had said that it is the Election Commission’s “duty […] to ensure that the election is conducted honestly, justly, fairly, and in accordance with law and that corrupt practices are guarded against”.

It suggested that the ECP could use latest technology to hold transparent elections. “The Election Commission is required to take all available measures including utilising technologies to fulfill the solemn constitutional duty to ensure that the election is ‘conducted honestly, justly, fairly and in accordance with law and that corrupt practices are guarded against’.”

It emphasised that all institutions were bound to follow the ECP.

During the meeting, the commission observed that it had not received a detailed order from the Supreme Court.

However, it decided to constitute a three-member committee, comprising the special secretary, director general (IT), and joint provincial election commissioner from Punjab that would take input from different professionals and technical organisations on the use of technology in Senate elections.

The committee would then prepare recommendations based on the input within four weeks’ time. It could also “take assistance from Nadra (National Database and Registration Authority), FIA (Federal Investigation Agency) and the ministry of information technology […] for better recommendations”.

A day earlier, Minister for Information Shibli Faraz called on the ECP to take “practical steps” to end corruption and secrecy in Senate elections.

The minister requested the ECP to “use technology — in the form of a bar code or a serial number on the ballot paper” — to ensure that the elections were transparent as per the SC’s opinion.

Speaking to the media outside the Supreme Court after the announcement of its opinion, PTI’s Senator Faisal Javed said the ECP would have to ensure three things: identifiable ballots, proportional representation and ensuring free and transparent elections.

  • Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has instructed the provincial chief secretary to write to the Establishment Division for reviewing its decision regarding transferring and posting of police officers under the Rotation Policy

According to sources in the Sindh government, the first batch of seven top officers is supposed to be rotated followed by the next batch after six months of interval.

However, instead of going by the book, the Centre went ahead with a preordained selective basis to transfer officers falling on serial numbers 3, 10, 13, 17, and 20.

This implicates that certain officers were specially chosen for transfer from Sindh, rather than following the protocol of the rotation policy, the report said.

The officials said that the chief minister directed Chief Secretary Mumtaz Ali Shah to consult with Sindh Inspector General of Police Mushtaq Ahmed Mehar and write to the Establishment Division for reviewing its transfer orders.

Earlier, the publication had highlighted the pick-and-choose policy was adopted by the federal government.

As per the notifications, the transferred officers of Sindh included FIA’s DIG Munir Ahmed Shaikh whose services were placed at the disposal of the Punjab government.

Besides the services of DIG Iqbal Dara, DIG Qamar-uz-Zaman and DIG Munir Shaikh were also placed at the disposal of the Punjab government.

Furthermore, the services of DIG Fida Hussain Mastoi were placed at the disposal of the National Highways and Motorway Police under the Ministry of Communications.

DIG Irfan Ali Baloch was similarly ordered to be transferred from Sindh and placed at the disposal of the Islamabad Capital Territory.
