valley of the dolls reread is over i cannot stop thinking and having thoughts.
what is killing me the most is the way jacqueline susann plays with irony and specifically how she utilizes anne as a catalyst for the drama and the highs and lows of the story. anne goes to ny bc she wants to experience something and she wants to live a life of her own design and she gets that life but in doing so,,, she gets into countless binds and often ends up putting herself last. the downfall is set up from the very beginning with the way anne has a very naive outlook on her surroundings- clue one was in the way she described neely so positively and seemed to think neely was above strife and hardship bc of her attitude. and ironically, you can argue that anne is why neely is self-destructive - anne basically sets neely up for success as a star, never realizing the emotional/ physically toll it would have on her friend (this isn’t me blaming anne at all, but again it’s the irony of anne accidentally dooming herself and neely by just wanting the best for her and her friend).
also the way we know what lyon will be like from the start- and how it’s only anne who can’t accept it until it’s too late. she pushes and pushes for a different ending for them and gets what she wants but not the way she intended it to happen- she has him they’re married with a kid and so rich,,,and their marriage is cold, exactly what she was so terrified of 20 yrs prior.
i don’t have time to write like a full meta right now lmao but im. thinking. something something anne wells is the self-destructive god figure of the book 🧿
