    NOTA: 10/10

    AOTY: 1965

    Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto, Getz/Gilberto (1965)

    Bossa Nova

Bossa nova developed in Brazil in the late 1950s and early 1960s as an extension of Samba, and this is exemplified by the fact that the phrase ‘bossa nova’ translates from the Portuguese for ‘new trend’. In terms of its relation to samba, bossa nova maintains much of the same rhythmic qualities such as the syncopated emphasis on the second beat as well as the 2/4 time it is often notated in. The differences between the two styles mainly revolve around the instrumentation and texture of the music. While samba boasts very large bands to produce a lively, energetic tone, bossa nova tends to be performed by a much more stripped back ensemble consisting of mostly vocals, drums and guitar (although other instruments may sometimes be added such as piano and saxophone).

The inclusion of guitar into bossa nova music is mainly credited to João Gilberto, who is often thought of to be one of the founders of this style of music. He was the first to incorporate guitar into this style, playing fingerstyle accompaniment to the vocals through adapting the rhythm commonly played by the tamborim in samba onto guitar.

João Gilberto is also known for creating one of the most popular bossa nova albums titled Getz/Gilberto. This album was a collaboration between João Gilberto and Stan Getz, who was a popular jazz saxophonist. Getz brought a distinct smooth jazz style to the album through his saxophone solos and accompaniment, which would become much more commonplace in bossa nova music after this project. Gilberto presents the bossa nova guitar style that he created, playing accompaniment through the tamborim rhythm. This album also contained the song ‘The Girl from Ipanema’ which is thought to be one of the most recorded pop songs of all time due to its ubiquitous nature of being common ‘elevator music’ or in other everyday places such as supermarkets.

Stan Getz/João Gilberto - "The Girl From Ipanema" From the album Getz/Gilberto (March 1964)

Last song scrobbled from iTunes at Last.fm

Fuck, what a great song. Astrid Gilberto's accent is otherworldly, her s's full and thick, almost a lisp, her r's barely there, the rhythmic stresses in all the unexpected places for someone used to English, German and Portuguese inflections mixed alluringly. And Stan Getz' sax when it finally comes breathy and expansive, like a heavy noble gas expanding inside a balloon, it's like a didgeridoo, or like what Jon Hassell would do to his instrument twenty years later. Bossanova, fourth world possible.
