Anything Goes Review: Sutton Foster is other-worldly

I very much hope that this review doesn't make you too sad that Anything Goes is closing today because, well, you won't be able to see it. But, there is going to be a tour so, I guess that you can go to see that if this particular excites you? Sorry

Anything Goes at the Barbican Centre is a massive highlight of the 2021 Theatre Season (more…)

    My TV this week

    Films

    Amityville 4: The Evil Escapes

Had loved the first, the second I quite liked, the third flopped... this one was nice enough but lacking as a horror. Uses a haunted lamp, a remarkable looking lamp that works well as a centre for evil, to move horror to a new place though in a style that fitted the theme.

While the lamp was fairly effective, the "face of evil" was something I wish they hadn't done, the haunted house horror that dominated tended to fall flat. One could see what they were aiming for but never any tension, been done many times better. Possession was effective but remarkably underdone.

What worked was the Evans/Leacock dynamics as a family. The grieving mother who adores her family, the tensions with grandma via generational differences and the grandma's attitude, the children who love the mother but our grieving. The boy who avoided rebel or idiot stereotype but just felt a nice chap, the way they faced their troubles with a sense of realism and not with rebels. It was easy to like the family and care what happened even if the horror, or the priests, wasn't effective

    Musicals

    Anything Goes

A production at the Barbican theatre that will return at some point this year, overseen by Ross MacGibbon and Kathleen Marshall, of the Cole Porter musical with Samuel Edwards as Billy and Nicole-Lily Baisden as Hope. Sutton Foster (who also was part of the 2011 run) is the best friend and singer Reno while Robert Lindsay plays hiding gangster Moonface Martin, two figures to grab publicity as big star names.

I have heard many of the famed songs (Your the Top, I Get a Kick Out of You) before but was doubtful going into this, I am not the biggest fan of musicals from that era. Left it feeling I would watch another adaption of this, has plenty of humour (Carry On and Camelot came to mind), many enjoyable songs, fun characters, likeable romances. There were a few too many dance numbers in the second half for my taste. I also felt the musical went on a little too long with the pacing of the romance a little off.

As a production, it was well done. Excellent costumes, the dancing is well done, good use of lighting for songs like the sweet "Be Like the Bluebird", great use of props for humour. Had a sense of 4th humour with songs like Friendship allowing for rows with the lighting or the conductor getting involved while Lindsay particularly had an eye for a chance to play just a little with the audience.

However there was a sense of "good but I could see it being even better" with the humour, romance and songs. The romances not quite being as good as might have been is probably is an issue with the play pacing and one did get behind the romances. However the rest of the "so near, yet not quite" is very much an issue of the production.

Felt Foster summed it up in her performance, gave a real sense of personality, her performance delivered the sense of friendship and fondness Reno has for certain characters, some good reaction comedy. However, though a fine singer, her songs lacked that sense of sizzle of personality and when delivering wit in conversation, she was slightly off.

In terms of humour, Lindsay (bar the odd moment were trying to be to gangster) was great, his confusion, the jokes about his placing in the rankings, the errors were so well delivered. Also loved Carly Mercedes Dyer as Erma, a role that could have been annoying, but she really delivered the spunk and the laughs. I did like Haydn Oakley as the English Lord getting American phrases wrong, very much an English aristocratic stereotype, a likeable and worked well within the play. There was plenty of humour potential, the misunderstandings, the use of props, the 4th wall moments, the farces.

The big songs were fun and nice but I have never been their biggest fan when I have heard them before, what I most enjoyed was the little ones I hadn't heard before like Bluebird or Easy to Love or the silly Sailor Shanties. For some songs like Friendship, I more enjoyed the comedy involved in the production than I did the song in itself. A little surprised Gypsy in Me hasn't been rewritten by now though.

    TV

    Dug Days

Five 15-minute episodes about Dug living with Carl. I really enjoyed Up and Dug was adorable, sweet and amusing. Also squirrels. This keeps the tone of the film with Dug's moments with Carl often sweet and they have plenty of amusing fun with the thoughts of a god in the garden and whatever the theme is of the episode.

    Batwoman season 3 part 1

I didn't realize it was the half-season finale situation. I really liked the using items from Batman villain history to bring new versions out for this generation to face, leading to fun adventures. Manages to find a good way to keep Alice and others in the sphere, the storylines feel right for the characters and their dynamics within the team.

The new additions show promise though Montoya needs a little more screen time, built up well to the challenges for the second half. I'm a little either way on how this will go, the build-up on both was really well done and the ideas are great but I'm not 100% convinced by the execution when in villain mode. Feels like a show that is confident with the characters it has. The show is now able to push on and really build since it doesn't have to introduce a new lead.
