Summary: Jake helps your daughter with her math homework.
Warnings: Mentions of the academy (not really serious, but seriously, Jake has gotten snubbed one too many times)
The rest of the house was dark except for the lights around the kitchen table at this point. You held your and Jake’s youngest daughter as you watched from around the corner. Your eldest daughter had been at her math homework since she got home from school, and when you couldn’t help her, you suggested she wait until her dad got home after press work. So when Jake got home around 4:30, she presented him with her homework, which was the first time she had done so since she was in third grade and all homework before this had drawn an easy answer from you. But, Jake had been stumped too, he tried, but to his dismay he couldn’t solve it, and he didn’t want to set a bad example, so he hadn’t turned to the internet yet.
“I just” Jake paused, “When did math become this hard? You’re in third grade for Pete’s sake!” He said, exasperated, while still having his eyes glued to the paper. You held in a laugh at his clear frustration, and even slight embarrassment that he couldn’t figure the problem out.
Your daughter was patient though, “It’s ok, I’ll just ask Tomilson at recess tomorrow daddy.”
“No, no we’re not giving up just yet, we don’t quit, remember?” He said as you walked away to check on and put your middle daughter to bed, she was currently brushing her teeth. It was late for a school night, the math dilemma had kept everyone up late past their bedtime. (Well, not really everyone, the girls usually went to bed at 8, and to them, you and Jake technically did too). But it was now 8:30, and as much as you wanted your daughter to solve the problem, you couldn’t let her stay up much later.
As you heard Jake’s frustration grow, however, you couldn’t help but post a tweet as you sat by your daughter as she told you a story from school before going to bed.
“You know how almost everyone, at least one time, cried at their kitchen table when their dad was trying to explain a math problem for them? Well, in the Gyllenhaal house, it’s going a little bit differently, Jake can’t figure out a math problem and I think he’s on the verge of tears.”
“Ok, but if you add the 3, shouldn’t you be able to carry the 10?”
“Mrs. Bellemont said that's against the rules though”
“I’m going to have to email Mrs. Bellemont then, because I don’t know how else she expects us to solve this problem” Jake looked up from the paper as he heard you walk in
You smiled and announced, “It’s time for bed, both of you, Jake, you’ve had a long day. I’m sure Mrs. Bellemont will forgive you for having one problem missing, just tell her we tried our very best, ok?”
Your daughter agreed with you and got up to leave from her seat, whereas Jake took one last glance at the problem.
“Wait, wait wait wait waittt, this says challenge problem, do you have to do the challenge problems sweetheart?” He looked at your daughter.
“Oh, it does? I thought that was for the one above, Mrs. Bellemont said not to do that one because she made a mistake when she wrote the problem.” Jake sighed in one part relief and one part frustration that he didn’t notice that earlier.
He patiently smiled and said, “Oh, well I suppose that's good then, but next time Mrs. Bellemont says not to do something because she made a mistake, why don’t we just scribble out the problem?”
Your daughter happily nodded and skipped off to bed.
“Thank goodness you’re an actor Jake” You said playfully, knowing full well you wouldn’t have been able to solve the problem either.
“Very funny, but remember that I have been able to keep an exact record of how many Academy Awards I have been nominated for and won.” He said as he left the table and turned off the lights.
“Let’s get to bed, wise guy”
A/n: This could completely be inspired by the fact I had two hundred pages of reading assigned to me to finish by the end of the week? In all honesty though, will I read it? Probably not, it’s only for a quiz and I’ll just wing it. Moving on, I wrote this as Jake and reader having three daughters because I honestly see Jake as a guy who only has daughters? Does anyone else see this in him? Let me know. Hope you enjoyed!
hell yeah you funky axolotl man
