Hey friendly reminder not to use Mexican culture (+ all other cultures but Iâm just gonna talk about Mexican culture cuz Iâm Mexican) when you are cosplaying a Japanese character and are a WHITE person. Like if you donât see where this is problematic then I donât know what to tell you.
Now Iâm going to start by saying yes this is about a specific person but I donât wish hate to them. And it is my fault for not better handling the situation.
There was a cosplayer on my for you page on tik tok that was cosplaying todoroki and had a Dia De Los Muertos inspired face paint (sugar skull). If you didnât know Dia De Los Muertos is a day to celebrate family who have passed, basically watch Coco and you get the idea. Obviously there is no harm in headcannoning characters as Mexican/Hispanic/ Latinx but is was clear that that wasnât what the cosplay was intended for. This holiday isnât one to post thirst traps too, honestly I donât think any holiday is one to put on a cultural theyâre not apart of an stan in front of a camera for like and views. I wonât get much on the Mexican/Japanese bit because I donât know what that stance is on that. I just know I was off put but the amount of cultures that this one person was doing in a 15 second long video.
I will admit that when I âconfrontedâ them I was very shy and didnât state the problems that the cosplay had. I will admit that. But it doesnât take a lot of brain cells to but those two together. This happened a few months ago but has been bothering me for so long.
End of the line, donât mash two cultures that are different with one another and a holiday a cultural significance for likes and views.

You know being first generation American has its pros and cons.
Donât get me wrong Iâm proud of it but the thing is that people question my ethnicityâŠ.a lotâŠ
I have straight light brown hair with Hazel colored eyesâŠIâm not pale but I donât have a lot of Melanin.
I personally donât think I look like a white person but I guess thereâs something called stereotypes that dictate what you are depending how you look like.
It sucks I guess but I love when people stare at me with wide eyes every time I speak fluent Spanish.
