#Starglass Zodiac Tumblr posts

  • Hey all, Happy Anniversary!!!! :’D If you can believe it, I came up with the idea for Starglass Zodiac 5 YEARS AGO today, way back in 2015! Since then it’s been a wild ride of development, and I couldn’t be happier with the results so far.

What you’re seeing here are snippets of a big WIP I’ve been chipping away at for the past while. Would’ve been cool to have it done for today, but it’s a pretty complicated thing with a lot of parts, and I can only work on it in spurts. ;u; I want to take all the time I need to make it as awesome as possible too! I’m really hyped for the end result. :D

This is currently my most developed project thus far, and also one of my largest! Getting more familiar with the scope of the world and characters really solidified that for me. I didn’t realize it would occupy so much of my time either, but here we are. xD This is all a one-person show and I’m running on fumes when it comes to my energy these days, but working on this to pass the time has been a treat nonetheless.

I’ll have an update about the general state of things over on my art blog @akysi, but for now, HAPPY ANNIVERSARY STARGLASS ZODIAC! :D

  • Colour Tests from June 4th, 2020

Hey you know what’s really hard? Colour theming! Specifically how lighting affects that colour theming of any given scene, and I find I struggle with that for comic panels. I can manage it for a stand-alone illustration and for character designs, but for comics I’ll need to account for a greater focus on backgrounds that will also have individual colour theming, and how those two work together. It’s also a matter of making sure that all the colours I use are still doing their job but without muddying the whole thing too. This thing will be COLOURFUL dangit! >:|

Each of my characters (for Starglass Zodiac anyway) has a very specific colour scheme that I don’t want to lose when incorporating them into backgrounds, but I also don’t want them to be detached from the environment when it comes to shading, so here I tried to find a balance between the two, and I think I have. For a quick and dirty colour test like this, anyway! I think I’ll do another one later with a more “daytime” palette to do the same thing. Glow effects and lighting also have specific colours for story reasons, i.e. the different star/element power colours, so it’s a lot to keep track of. I think this is a step in the right direction though (I need to cool it on the gradients sometimes lol).

#art #artists on tumblr #colour tests#Starglass Zodiac#Cassie#colours #idk what else to tag tbh lol #I primarily did this as prep for redoing the colours for SGZ's prologue #I like the lineart and compositions overall but the colours are.... bleh #to me anyway #the glow effects are fine but the rest is not where i want it to be

Well hi! It’s been a while, hasn’t it? Fear not, the word train has not stopped, but outside of my art a lot of that progress has been behind the scenes lately. I’ll probably make an update post about that later but for now, I’ve got another discussion topic! :D

This is an idea I’ve had kicking around for a while that is similar to my OC Design Talk series, but will focus more on a character’s personality and mannerisms rather than their visual designs and the concepts behind them. Specifically, comparing characters that seem to have similar personality traits, and exploring the differences between them to set them apart. Not that having similar characters (especially across different stories) is a bad thing, but I think this will be an interesting way to explore their nuances and examine what makes them unique, even if they’re given a similar foundation for their traits.

Every artist or writer has specific character types and tropes that they gravitate towards, and I’m certainly no exception! From what I’ve seen so far, this is also a good way to delve into details about these characters that I might not have ironed out previously, both inside and outside the context of their original stories.

So with that, let’s get started, shall we? :D Strap in, this is a long one!

  • WIPs from October 17th, 2019

hi life is still terrible so have some space bunnies

As I’ve mentioned before, the Sun and Moon spirits in Starglass Zodiac change their forms based on the year in the Chinese zodiac, in this case the rabbit. I’ll probably draw all 12 because I can/want to, but these and the dragons are the only ones that are relevant to the main story. Might even do the cat as the honorary 13th zodiac too, who knows.

Since the dragon designs are where I want them to be, I had to reverse engineer these to make them seem cohesive based on that. As in, make sure they look like part of the same set rather than something different entirely. It reminds me of the spirits from Okami in that regard, as they had to match with Amaterasu’s general aesthetic despite being different animals.

It was interesting to distill the designs of the dragons into a much smaller frame like this, as a dragon has a lot more space to fill as far as complexity goes. I wanted to make sure I added the most important elements with what space I did have, and matched the colour placement for the same reason. (and yes I realize I used the word space haha)

  • Okay I promise I’ll talk about the pre-existing designs I have eventually but talking about new ones is just too fun. xD This is Scutum! He’s the laid-back and optimistic companion to Scorpio.

  • Whew, just made it! This has been about 2 months in the making but I wanted to finish it before New Year’s. Updated artwork for all of the zodiac cast! :D

I’ve been meaning to do this for some time since second year, and while I still put a lot of time and effort into the art I made back then, it was still under a massive time crunch. This time I could take all the time I needed to properly structure everything, get the lines just right, and make any detail changes I wanted. Overall I’m super happy with these! Not only do I have more high-res art of my characters, but I’m planning on using these for the Characters page on the comic site. :’D

Aries got a colour scheme change as I felt it needed more contrast. Sagittarius got his costume changed to break up his shapes a bit more and distribute his colours better, and Cancer got new legs to better support the rest of her body. Otherwise it’s pretty much minor cosmetic changes, along with them being better drawn overall.

First Row: Cassie, Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn, Aries, Taurus, Virgo, Libra
Second Row: Leo, Gemini (Solana & Luna), Cancer, Sagittarius, Scorpio, Ophiuchus

I have a speedpaint video lined up for this poster that I’ll upload when I’m done editing it, but I wanted to at least post the art first. Happy New Year everyone! :D
