I want to like Dune so much more than I ultimately did, rip

#cw for discussing of racism/white savourism in the following tags #preamble: i love most of villeneuve's stuff - arrival is one of my most fav movies of all time #and blade runner 2049 despite some ickiness is also high up there i watched it 3 times in imax #but 90% of my problems with dune can be summarised by the fact that they cast a white actor in the main role #like look. ive read the books. i wasn't a fan of all the messiah stuff there isnt but it was at least somewhat palatable #*either #but now uve got a culture modelled mostly on middle eastern/north african desert culture #who was manipulated by white women (!) to prepare for the coming of the white messiah (!!) #who is a white boy the one white boy in the movie who then gets worshipped by brown and black people #like. yikes? idk maybe im oversensitive but it just made me soooo uncomfortable #and literally just make Paul not white. and boom uve mitigated it somewhat #cw for black murder #and literally the first guy he kills is a big aggressive black dude #😬😬😬 #(the other 10% are the abysmal pacing of the last 30 min lol) #everything else was top notch but hooooooo boi yeah i wont be going to see this one three times #which is a shame ive been hyped for it for YEARS #discourse #can we just jump the timeline until we get to god emperor #bc that way i get to see my big worm boy #(also on a more personal note but timtam chamalam has the appeal of white soggy bread to me lmao)

Wish there was a tag for alt LoTR designs because much as I love the movies…half the fun is seeing how people interpret different characters. I don’t want all designs to be the same I want everyone to have their own little quirks!

#this is why the silm fan environment is better. you might get misogyny and bad discourse #but at least you see constant workings and reworking of the elements. west slavic noldor. xianxia sindar. west african vanyar. #Kelsey liveblogs Tolkien #where in LoTR the movie designs were so beautiful that everyone just uses them… #but I would like to see a change of pace!

Film: CEDDO (d. Ousmane Sembène, 1977, Senegal).
Forum: Block Cinema Northwestern Univ.   Format: 35mm
Observations: Some 40-50 people gathered for this rare Chicago screening of a Sembène masterpiece, an allegorical tale of a revolt against a king and his imam who forcibly convert the local population. It's a demanding film (a lot of it involving lengthy debates among the different groups of characters) that requires staying power and attention, and gradually builds to a dynamic finale. Gorgui I. Tall, an NW graduate student, offered an introduction based on his studies of the filmmaker and African oral tradition. The film was flawlessly projected from a private collector's print (film rights courtesy of Janus Films).

The Best Foreign Movies to Stream on Lewabo

International cinema has always had a profound influence on American movies. At the same time, many of the great films in languages other than English retool the styles and genres of popular American movies. Have you ever forgotten you were reading subtitles as you were swept up in the action on screen? Westerns, film noirs, and even romances tap into universal visual languages of movement, action, and emotion that draw in worldwide audiences.

We feature work from major auteurs of European cinema like Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut of the French New Wave, Vittorio De Sica of Italian neorealism, and Spanish surrealist Luis Buñuel.

Our list also includes major Japanese masterpieces from Akira Kurosawa, Masaki Kobayashi, and Hirokazu Koreeda, Hong Kong cinema’s Wong Kar-wai, African movies from Nigeria, Tawainese auteurs Ang Lee and Edward Yang, and contemporary films from South Korea’s Lee Chang-dong and Bong Joon-ho.

International cinema often has a political or philosophical bent—a rebel core—as it frequently explores the human condition within histories of oppression. While African cinema and women directors are underrepresented on this list and across the international film festival circuit, Céline Sciamma’s “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” from France in 2019 masterfully reinvents ideas around gendered gaze. Get ready for films you’ve heard about and obscure gems that just may become your new cinematic obsession.

    Christian African movies on Lewabo

Lewabo compiled data (from July 2020) on all international movies to come up with a Lewabo score—a weighted index split evenly between IMDb and Metacritic scores. To qualify, the film had to be directed by a non-American, be primarily in a language other than English, have a Metascore, and have at least 5,000 votes. Ties were broken by Metascore, and further ties were broken by IMDb user rating. Lewabo list combines the scores from critics and audiences to give you a sense of a movie’s greatness. Check out our list to see what you’ve already watched—and what great and underappreciated must-see to add to your watchlist.

    Movie: RESPECT

    Released: August 13, 2021

Starring: Jennifer Hudson, Forrest Whitaker, Marlon Wayans, Skye Dakota Turner, Audra McDonald

    Director: Liesl Tommy

I actually watched this movie a couple of weeks after it’s release. I’m just now posting my short review.

Respect was a marvelous watch. This feature film follows the early life of legendary musical great and anointed Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin’s, early childhood from singing in her father’s (Rev. C.L. Franklin) church choir to her international stardom.

The young Skye Dakota Turner and the seasoned Jennifer Hudson brought the Queen of Soul’s turbulent but humble upbringing as a child with a gifted singing voice that was exploited to the fullest by everyone around her, especially her father, to life on screen. Subsequently, that gifted voice led her to the stardom that she thrived to obtain and eventually did as an adult.

In viewing this enthralling film, the most impressing acting job, in my opinion, was by comedian Marlon Wayans. He portrayed Aretha’s first husband and manager, Ted White. Provo! And, of course, the great, Forest Whitaker and stage icon, Audra McDonald, laid down their extraordinary performances as the Queen of Soul’s legendary and controlling father and her inspiration and strong mother. The rest of the star studded supporting cast, such as, Mary J. blige, Heather Headley, Gilbert Glenn Brown and the many others were tremendous, as well.

Overall, I give this film four stars out of five stars. A great watch. I definitely recommend that you see this movie.⭐️

These films broaden representation for women in Nigeria’s male-dominated Nollywood Movies One of the most glaringly harmful elements in Nollywood Movies is the representation of women as subservient, dependent on men, and without ambition.

Women are often depicted in Nollywood films as housewives, Nigerian movies, sex workers, cooks, childbearers, and other roles meant to reinforce feminist narratives.According to EkuEdewor, the subject of his interview with BusinessDay in April 2021, you need more representation for women in Nollywood Movies than telling the story from a male perspective: from character to story to costume.

Throughout Nigeria, women are subjected to stereotypical portrayals that promote gender inequality by encouraging the audience to support the same.

Behind the Scenes of Where Lies the Truth

''It was fun to have had a blend of such nature of personalities on a project, most of whom have been in the industry for several years.''

Where Lies the Truth happens to be one of the highly-rated Sierra Leonean movie crafts in recent times. The casts and crew come from diverse backgrounds of experience on-screen and off-screen. It was shot in the months of August to September 2021. The one good thing about this project was that all the casts including the crew were in love with the script the moment they laid hands on it.
