  • (Will I be making a new years post over two months past new years? ab-so-lutely.)

Kev stood in the hanger, looking out over his crew. Every year, when the universe decides that the old year was gone and the new year has arrived, the crew gathered in the hangar. They gathered to celebrate, commemorate, drink, laugh, and cry in a large group once a year. Kev was never a man for sentiment, but he himself was a firm believer in this one tradition.

Kev lead his eyes around the room. The familiar faces: Klove, Herkendel, Johanson, Henry, Jokto, Doc, the various other crew members. Faces that had joined within the past year: Peacock, Goliath, Joq’ethren, and Sisuma the Greol medic.

He noticed the diversity of his crew. Mostly Duajhaq, but the personality he felt came from the Humans. Humans of all sorts from all sorts of places. They even had a Burso and a Greol, complete oposites on the spectrum working together on one ship. It was an odd harmony, one that could only work on a ship cruising between stars.

What Kev noticed most of all over the milling mass of pirates were the spots where no-one stood. Where faces that Kev knew should be, but weren’t. Faces that Kev last saw being placed gently in the reactor chamber to be scattered as star dust.

Kev coughed and the room fell silent. He waited for a few seconds, savoring the still air. “Right, well here we are.” A few of the new recruits stifled chuckles, they didn’t know any better. “We survived another year. Against astronomical odds us band of hucksters and marauders and general shitheads have dodged the law and made names for ourselves. We blazed a path across the stars, we make the rules wherever we go, we are masters of our fate. We came from everywhere across the universe, but one thing unites us.” A mass of tattooed, dirty, reverent faces stared at their captain. “Freedom. Freedom from society. Freedom to make money, freedom to get drunk, freedom to love whoever, freedom to live however you will among the stars”. With each mention of “freedom” the crowd got more and more riled up. Crew mates joining into the chorus of shouts in support of Kev and all that he built. The family he had made. The family he gave them.

Amidst the cheers, Kev took a swig of the flask of pretty bird he keeps on his hip and jumped down from his makeshift stage into the mob. Some clapped him on the back, some shook his hand, some saluted.

He made his way back to his office and scratched another tally under the desk, “Another year, Check.”

  • I write this at the end of the day, and though I can still recall some of the finer details of the dream I awoke from this morning, I’ll only make mention its concluding message: Aliens conditioned humans to drink the milk of other animals, because it fulfills a voyeristic fetish of theirs.

  • ASJJDSH MY BOYFRIEND IS BULLYING ME BECAUSE HE JUST FIGURED OUT I’M TERRIFIED OF ALIENS.

“So let me get this straight, you can watch some of the goriest, gut wrenching horror movies without blinking an eye, but someone plays the x-files theme or talks about alien sightings and you’re on the brink of tears?”

THIS COMING FROM THE MAN WHO CAN’T EVEN WATCH THE ORIGINAL HALLOWEEN (1978) WITHOUT BEGGING ME TO TURN IT OFF.

  • It’s 2020 and things are weird and times are tough and everything’s confusing. So, when I found this project of mine from (I think) third grade it kind of stopped me in my tracks. It’s a very mediocre drawing entitled, “It Could Happen.” It’s about how when we embrace people (or in this case, aliens) that are different from us…we can work together and learn from each other. Seeing this made me both happy and sad. Sad because third-grade-me seemed to be more insightful than 30-something-me (and more intelligent than most people in or running for public office). But it made me happy because it reminded me that humans are instinctually good and open to new things, people and ideas… and THAT made me hopeful! OUT OF THE MOUTHS OF BABES! (And I’m honestly loving Alien Teacher’s midi dress and custom eyewear.)

  • Something I’ve noticed in the Alien movie franchise:

Ripley always ends up eating a meal, usually in a cafeteria/communal dining area

    • In the Nostromo dining area, twice (Alien),
    • On the Sulaco, in the marine mess (Aliens) and
    • On Fury 161, in the cafeteria (Alien 3).
    • Also, on the secret research ship she is seen eating in the cafeteria during testing (Alien: Resurrection).

Something else of note-there’s always some kind of fight or tension during these meals. Arguments about pay for non-standard work (Alien), Ripley’s suspicion of droids (Aliens), the prisoners’ general unease around women (Alien 3) or the situation in general (Resurrection).

I wonder what the significance is?

  • People

    Way far off

    are watching

    I call them

The Big Eye in the Sky

    They see all we do

    because they want to

    It must be interesting

    to watch a young world

    do as it does

    I know people everywhere

do the same thing with their time

    I was once told

Human Nature is the same everywhere

    and it must be true

We all do what we do

    just like you
