Today, September 26, marks the dies natalis (anniversary) of the dedication of the temple of Venus Genetrix in 46 BCE.
This is Venus in her aspect of goddess of motherhood and divine ancestress of the patrician gens Julia. Julius Caesar believed his family was descended from Venus through Aeneas, the child she conceived with the Trojan prince Anchises, and dedicated a temple to her in Rome as Venus Genetrix in 46 BCE.
The origin of this particular statue of Venus Genetrix in Lappa, Crete is especially interesting because Lappa supported Octavian, the adopted son and principal heir of Julius Caesar, in the final war of the Roman Republic. Following his victory, Octavian granted autonomy and special privileges to Lappa, which enjoyed prosperity and political influence as a result.

March 19, 2021 | Quo Vadis (2/2)
Later in the film Quo Vadis (1951), Lygia admits to Marcus Vinicius her love for him, and Marcus is thrilled. Then her belief in Christ comes up, and he gets frustrated. Paul, the apostle, walks in on the pair.
Marcus: What more can I do or say to prove that I’m not an enemy of her god?
Marcus: Tell me what more I should do.
Paul: Well, you own slaves, do you not?
Marcus: Hundreds. Good ones too. Why?
Paul: Jesus wishes no man to be in bondage. You should set them free.
Marcus: Set them free? But they’re mine, I own them.
Paul: But you can’t buy human beings, Marcus. Faith in Christ is based on love. He asks all people to love one another.
Marcus: Yes, so I heard your old fisherman say. You want me to love the whole human race? You want me to love Parthians, Egyptians, Persians ... and all the rest who want put a blade through my ribs?
Paul: Has it occurred to you to put down your sword ... and renounce war against these people? Has it occurred to you that you might conquer them with love?
