This romantic dramedy/heist movie stars Anne Hathaway and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Linda and Paxton, a couple who have broken up but are forced to remain flatmates in London during the initial lockdown in March 2020. If that sounds like studio execs just throwing ideas at a dartboard that says COVID on it in big letters, well. That’s what it sounds like. I thought the idea of the Grand High Witch having a metallic breast holder was just a design idea, and that the “cold effect” when she removed the potion from her chest was just for beautiful visuals…

I was absolutely not aware that actually this seems to be a reference to the expression “Colder than a witch’s teat in a brass brassiere” (one of the variations of the simplified expression “colder than witch’s tit”. 

This makes even more sense when you remember that all the other Formula 86 potions in the hotel bedroom are kept in huge vases filled with ice… And if the Grand High’s chest is so cold that it makes even warm air steam at its contact, then isn’t it the perfect place to keep it? Near a heart so cold it covers in frost everything that gets near to it… If there is even a heart in there.

Fitting that William Shakespeare placed these words in a play that shares a name with his son Hamnet. Fitting that Maggie O’Farrell has crafted a book centred around Hamnet’s life and last days, and Anne Hathaway’s life and endurance after her son’s death.

What’s Hamnet to me or me to Hamnet, that I should weep for his mother trying to hold him in life, or for his father carrying his body to the grave.
