The U.S. Commerce Department announced its plan to enforce a ban on downloading WeChat & TikTok from U.S. app stores starting September 20. The move will enforce a Trump administration order attempting to block the China-based apps in the United States. Apple and Google have not yet responded to the announcement. The move means that those who already use the TikTok app may continue to use it, but will likely be unable to get future updates of the product. Those without the apps already downloaded would be unable to access them. The TikTok app will become completely prohibited on November 12 unless a security arrangement is reached between the U.S. government and the app’s parent company, ByteDance. Immediate restrictions on WeChat are much more extensive.
