was scrolling through instagram, saw a post labelled as an informative post about terms in the queer community, specifically the ones in the acronym LGBTQIA+. it went through and listed the term each stood for and the definition for each term. in general, it was a well made and informative post about queer terms, except for a few things. one of which about the meaning of the “A”.
when the post reached “A” it stated that the “A” stood for asexual and ally. immediately, i was thrown into the five stages of grief - yes, i should have known this was coming, yes, i should no longer be disappointed by this, and yes, i clicked on the comments to see if anyone would comment on the mistake - i thought that maybe it would be one or two of the comments pointing out the exclusion of aromantic and agender, and championing for the removal or correction in the post.
there were hundreds of comments demanding the mistake be noticed. each of them read along the same line, each just as supportive! any who asked a question about the definition of aro or agender in the comment section swiftly received a well informed answer. i scrolled and scrolled and scrolled through literal hundreds of comments on this post with 15k+ likes demanding the people using aromantic and agender be recognized and supported, and shaming the use of replacing both with “ally”.
what overwhelming support from the wider queer community… i’ve genuinely never been more pleasantly surprised!
