Batgirl / Harlequin of Hate / Batman: The Killing Joke au
Sandor Clegane rescues Sansa the night of the Battle of the Blackwater. She falls in love with her protector on their journey North, and he with her. However, afraid he’s not good enough for her and that their stations in life will ultimately keep them apart, he immediately heads for the hills after reuinting her with Catelyn and Robb. Sansa is heartbroken but agrees to marry one of the Frey sons, believing she’ll never love again anyway.
Hearing about the engagement Sandor drinks himself into oblivion and ends up kidnapped by the Brotherhood Without Banners. After being released when R'hllor deems him worthy, he then kidnaps Arya only for her to leave him for dead after a fight in an inn. Jaded, Arya overhears some bandits talk about their shared fear of bats, and Arya decides to escape detection and strike fear in her enemies with a new persona.
On the day of the Red Wedding, Frey men arrive with a bloodied helmet: the Hound’s helm. Sansa goes into shock believing her true love dead. Unable to face the day, Sansa wears an obscuring veil when evening comes and she is to marry. However, after the ceremony and when she’s about to be bedded against her will, Sansa overhears the slaughter taking place in the hall. Her new husband laughingly tells her of the Frey’s betrayal, and that her brother and mother and all the Northerners are being killed.
Frantic, Sansa escapes her husband and runs the halls, the veil still hiding her face.
Meanwhile, Arya, now known throughout the countryside as the “Bat Wench”, arrives too late to save Robb and Catelyn but fights the guards and goes in search of Sansa. When she sees the veiled bride running down the hall, she doesn’t recognize her sister and advances, prepared to interrogate what she assumes is a Frey girl.
Yet Sansa, her mind overwhelmed by the loss of Sandor, her mother, brother, and the chaos around her, panics at the sight of this human bat striding toward her. In terror, she leaps from a nearby balcony into the river below –
Where the Brotherhood Without Banners have doused the waters with a concoction blessed by R'hllor: a strange acid brewed to drive insane the Frey and Lannister forces that fall in.
When Sansa emerges from the waters, she is disoriented, in searing pain glimpsing different timelines flitting through her mind. When she finally removes the stinging veil from her face, she sees her new reflection: her skin bleached white, her hair two-toned black and red.
She looks just like a harlequin clown.
When Dondarrion and the rest of the Brotherhood find her, she is cackling in madness. They pledge allegiance to their new queen, who through her hysterical laughter calls herself The Harlequin.
Leading the Brotherhood in a seige against the Freys, the Harlequin also plans to avenge herself on Batgirl, who is getting together her own ragtag group to try to reclaim Winterfell.
There is also the Gravedigger recovering in the Quiet Isle. What will he do when word reaches him of Batgirl and the Harlequin?
