in most of ashley’s verses, he’s some kind of lawman, or he’s on the good side of the law. in all of those verses, he’s former military, with the exception being his forensic technician verse — aka, his good ending / everything turns out alright verse. the military itself is not the reason he later becomes a lawman, it’s the fact that joining the military allowed him to get out of harlan. in his forensic technician verse, he doesn’t join the military, but he lives with uncle and aunt in pikeville, which, again, gets him out of harlan and away from his alcoholic father. it’s leaving the house that starts him on the path of becoming a lawman, and it’s staying in the house that starts him on the path of becoming an outlaw. there are a few exceptions to this, ( such as his farmhand verse ) but staying in that house, his father’s house, is what condemns him in almost every single alternate verse. because in almost every single one of those verses, his father doesn’t drink himself to death while ashley is enlisted, no, in those verses, ashley kills his father.

“something’s not right about what I'm doing but i’m still doing it— living in the worst parts, ruining myself. my inner life is a sheet of black glass. if I fell through the floor I would keep falling.
the enormity of my desire disgusts me.”
to anyone who knows ashley solely as deputy graves, it would come as no surprise that he struggles to give or express any affection, let alone receive it. loving at all is almost uncomfortable for him, and confronting his need for intimacy, attachment, and contact —— well, the enormity of his desire quite literally disgusts him. the issue is not rooted in his relationship with his sexuality or gender, but in his fear of being seen —— there is very little his trauma does not effect. his self-worth is, unfortunately, severely affected —— which leads to the self-taught belief that he is unlovable. he is repulsed by his need for contact because he believes he is not worthy of it. not in a self-pitying, woe is me fashion —— he just doesn’t believe in the possibility that anyone could love him, not after what he’s done, not after seeing him for who he is. this, as you can imagine, causes problems in his relationships —— platonic, romantic, or familial. the belief that he is unlovable is unshakable. any attempts to convince him otherwise will be met with anger.
but despite his aversion to intimacy, with the most revulsion being pointed toward physical intimacy —— ashley’s primary love language is physical touch, with his secondary being acts of service. he is verbally competent but he struggles with confessions —— he’s been in love with very few people, and he’s confessed that love, as of the events of his canon, to no one. christian is not the first person he falls in love with, but he is the first person ashley admits to loving, and the first person to love ash in return.
between the two of them, ashley is often the one reciprocating, ( he is the one to say ‘ I love you, too, ’ he returns the feeling, never confesses it first ) but he grows to initiate most physical touch, and soon grows to be the one who says I love you first —— there are other verbal phrases, ways to admit to it, i.e. a loving ‘stay safe,’ ‘be careful,’ but as someone who struggles in words of affirmation and words to indicate love, ‘ I love you ’ is one of the only things he can say, it’s the only thing that feels right. though, see also: christian reminds ashley on rare occasion not to go where he can’t follow. it is said in season two, and season four as well, and ash returns this, reciprocates it, by saying they’re partners, saying they’re stuck together, until the end of the line. and this relates to ashley’s kind of intimacy, how he desires it: he wants a long-lasting kind of love. he’s never been one for one-night stands, he doesn’t want casual, he wants a love that he will not lose. for three decades, people have left, or he has left them. he wants something where he will have to face neither.
as far as the topic of touch goes, ashley is a tactile person, and will seek physical contact when talking to someone, or when standing or sitting beside them. this piece of his character fades, during and after leaving the corps, but slowly emerges once again after christian is introduced into his life. it’s a hand on christian’s thigh in the car, hand on his shoulder in the office, in the bar, ashley’s hand against his jaw to make christian’s eyes meet his. when christian’s lying in a hospital bed, their fingers are intertwined, and when ashley’s bleeding in the backseat, bullet in his gut, he’s got christian’s hand in his, held in a vice grip. as their relationship first develops into something romantic, christian is usually the one who initiates; he’ll lean against ashley’s shoulder, lay against his chest —— things to say just hold me, which ashley always does. but after certain moments, intense days on the job, it’s ashley who reaches out for him instead.

@deputystakes : [ WEDDING ] : after getting officially married, our muses share their first kiss as a married couple. kisses. selectively accepting.
it was a backyard wedding. christian had never thought he was going to have a backyard wedding, of all goddamn things, but outdoor venues were expensive, and there was no way in hell he was going to walk into a church. ( he loved ashley, really, but there were wounds in his ribs that had finally sealed closed after years of learning how to love himself, how to love himself so that he could love ashley with all of him ) it was valentina’s idea : they had plenty of goddamn land out there in pike county. get some picnic tables, some benches, an arch.
the minister was a friend of ash’s from his time in the military. and thank god, because christian didn’t know how to find a minster, let alone someone who would marry two men who were also vampires. the benches were full of their friends, but it was, all in all, a small affair. ophelia and charlie were there - valentina and lizbeth renee. photos of arthur jr and mary-grace. photos of ash’s family, who couldn’t be here, either. they were in their suits, and christian had even foregone his hat, but they stand there, in front of that dingy little arch painted white and loved with garden lattice and vine. they get married at sunset, so that the reception could be at night, because lizbeth begged for them to send the grooms off on their honeymoon with sparklers and candles. ( and good old charles seemed pretty relieved that he wouldn’t have to reapply his spf several times during the reception ) .
where do you wanna go for the honeymoon, christian asked his fiance two weeks after he proposed, stretched out on the couch with ash’s head in his lap. anywhere in particular? and they had decided that it didn’t really matter, so long as they were together, so they were just going to pack up their things into ash’s pretty little camaro and drive until they didn’t wanna drive anymore, and then they’d come home. ophie and charlie could watch the animals while they were gone.
the vows are beautiful, promises of healing and long life - literally, since they’d be spending close to a century together thanks to ash’s new vampiric lifespan. family was what you chose it to be, not necessarily by blood, and though christian was going to be taking his fiance’s last name, ash was being brought into the murphy family by way of lizbeth’s hugs and valentina’s playful banter. ( things were still rocky between she and christian, but they were healing for lizbeth’s sake. for their own. ) the boy with the books and the glasses and the boy who wanted a little farmhouse may never be the men they wanted to be, but what mattered is that the weapon and the specimen were dead. they died alongside henri lapierre in the ancient mountains, the pact of their mutually assured destruction broken by their blood seeping into the peat moss. christian wasn’t sure what kind of men they were going to be after this, but he knew they were going to be okay.
‘ by the power invested in me by the great commonwealth of kentucky, i now pronounce you mr. and mr. christian and ashley graves. you may now kiss your husband. ’
christian laughs as he scoops ashley’s face into his hands, kissing him long and sweet while their friends and family cheer them on. he pretends not to smile into the kiss, all fanged and happy, when ashley’s hands find the back of his neck, and when they separate, their foreheads touch, laughing and happy. i love you, he whispers against the other’s skin, and with their hands interlocked in each other’s, they make their way back down the aisle while everyone follows after them, ready for the reception - and more appropriately, one hell of a party !

𝐒𝐇𝐄𝐋𝐋𝐄𝐘 𝐖𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐓𝐋𝐄𝐃 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐅𝐑𝐎𝐙𝐄𝐍 𝐂𝐎𝐑𝐍 𝐎𝐔𝐓 of the diner’s freezer and wrapped in a hand towel before walking back into the seating area where Ashley sat nursing a broken nose. She moved his hand that held a towel to the bloody appendage and then hefted the corn into the hand she just freed of a bloody towel. “Man, you sure know how to pick ‘em, dontchya?” she asked reached behind him to clear the table of plates and cups. He had come in rather late and she figured she had just been closer. Usually Christian was tagging along but she didn’t see him this time. Weird. She eyed the empty spaces on either side of Ashley a second but didn’t bother asking what happened. ( wasn’t any of her business. )
Grabbing the beer she had earlier and another for Ashley, she passed him his and leaned across from him at the bar. “You didn’t ask but here’s the rub,” she tilted her bottle in his direction, “I think it’s that mouth that got you that nose.”

normally, no. partially because, and this might sound stupid, who knows, he likes keeping his life and himself separate, you know? which is one of the reasons he doesn’t really do relationships. he doesn’t like most forms of intimacy, not because he just doesn’t like them, but because it requires being seen and being open and letting more walls down than he’s comfortable with. but it’s entirely different with christian. mostly because, they just know each other. and they’ve seen each other. ashley doesn’t worry about christian uncovering his past and shit hitting the fan because of it. and that said —— christian is the only person he’s ever really been comfortably intimate with. so, yeah. he steals the shit out of his clothes. it starts with him using christian’s carhartt as a blanket in the backseat when he’s getting some much-needed rest on a long-ass drive, and later, he probably walks into work wearing one of christian’s flannels.
#STUDY —— someone is digging your grave right now. #this was supposed to be a cute question and now i'm bringing up ashley's problems with relationships #god i cannot stick to the goddamn point #yes. he steals clothes. from chris
one of the common themes with vampire antagonists in gothic media is the fear that surrounds them, the terror the public feels at the thought of a monster appearing as a gentleman. it’s the reveal that makes them so terrifying —— the realization that the man you invited into your home, befriended, isn’t who you thought he was, isn’t what he initially appeared to be. take the original 1985 fright night, for example, take the scene where dandridge is quietly revealed to be a vampire by vincent checking his appearance in a little pocket mirror, and seeing that the vampire lacks a reflection of his own —— it catches him off guard, he drops the mirror, and like the illusion that dandridge was human, it shatters. up until that point, dandridge had been the handsome neighbor. and then his true nature was revealed, not by word, not by brewster’s incessant warning, but by vincent seeing it, seeing the terror himself. what makes some monsters so terrifying is how they so often look like everyone else. ashley is this kind of monster.
now, ashley and christian operate in a world where vampires are known to exist, where they are regarded as citizens, where they function as a key part of society. you have humans and vampires co-existing in any single place existence at all is possible. but this fear, of the gentleman being a monster, still exists, only it’s evolved, it’s changed from its original form. christian is tall, dark-haired and handsome, but still treated as if he’s hiding a more monstrous half. like they expect this fear to already be true. like the reveal has already been made. often, he was never that gentleman to begin with, the amber eyes and too-sharp canines pulled that illusion away. he was never the gentleman dramatically revealed to be the monster, in their eyes, he was just the monster.
but ashley fits this fear properly, the original fear, it’s ashley they owe their terror to, who it belongs to. christian is simply the monster. they’ve made him into a monster but ashley is the reason they made him into one in the first place, ashley is the gentleman you invite into your home only to realize, with great terror, that he does not appear in your pocket mirror, that he was hiding something underneath the polite exterior. they fear christian because of previous monsters like ashley. christian can hide nothing they fear him for, not the eyes, not the teeth, but ashley can. he can hide the bloody past and acts deemed monstrous. he can hide it until the ribbon holding everything together breaks.
and I know you should never end shit with ‘ to conclude ’ but eh, to close this off: christian is a monster until he is revealed to be a gentleman, and ashley is a gentleman until he is revealed to be a monster. ( but neither of them can control what makes them monstrous. )
#STUDY —— someone is digging your grave right now. #FILE —— your slaughterhouse. your killing floor. your morgue & final resting. #i might add to this later but. i had to get it out of my system #point is: people fear christian for reasons they should be fearing ashley #montana may rb.
𝐅𝐄𝐑𝐑𝐈𝐒 𝐖𝐀𝐋𝐊𝐄𝐃 𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐎 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 shaking the rain out of her hair and off her sweatshirt. She should really watch the news but where would the fun be in that? The thunder rumbled and vibrated through the floor of the small building earning a curious look around for the source. Ferris often looked bewildered or confused and when she didn’t have a deer-in-headlights look she was often told she looked to have murder on the brain. That was a fair assumption. Being an author and artist of the macabre and insane--- she did have murder on the brain. Almost constantly.
Spotting one of her favorite deputies, Ferris walked over and placed the cup of coffee she had gotten for him on the corner of his desk. Despite having been told repeatedly to remain at the station in case of emergencies, she thought it was poor practice to have the Deaf girl mind the phones. She spent most of her time moving the archaic filing system to the digital age and left the phones to Mrs Barr-- who struggled nearly as much with as often as her babysitter called to complain or ask if this or that was normal for a three year-old. Maybe Ferris should switch jobs with the baby sitter.
“Thought you could use a fifteenth cup,” she teased lightly, looking up from the coffee. “There’s--- There’s another missing persons case.” She pulled the file from her bag and smoothed it back out before offering it to Ash. “Some-- Some trucker outside of town. Looks like an accident... I don’t know, it looked like a “you” case.” A heavy shrug indicated the end of her statement as she handed it off to let Ash look through it. Ferris glanced around the empty station before looking back to the other. “The inside of the cab was pretty tore up but not a lot of blood inside. Whatever happened-- it happened quick. No sign of the driver...I’d check the trees.” She had been looking into the infected cases ( everyone had these days ) and looked at Ash’s computer absently. “Some of the infect are string---stringing people up now. Hides the bodies better, I guess.”
