Jeordie's vinyl etiquette guide! (part 1?)

Alright, I decided to make this post because I see more and more new people enter the vinyl scene (especially younger people and teens, welcome!) but I see so many people manhandle their records!

I'm here to put an end to that, and to hopefully give some helpful tips on how to properly handle your records.

    Here goes!

    1. Storage and protection.

I've seen so many "aesthetic" posts going around with pretty pictures of records often laying down flat. Now I'm sure they were just laid down that way for the picture but this is not how you store your records!
You must always keep your records upright like a book, otherwise they can warp and bend due to the pressure of the stack! Do not ever store them flat, or you will risk having bent, unplayable records.
Do not put anything on top of them or squish them too tight inbetween other objects, just letting them rest against one side is enough.

    - Plastic outer sleeves and antistat record sleeves:

To protect your vinyl from dust and scratches, I highly advice getting plastic outer sleeves and anti-static inner sleeves. They can be bought in bulk and it can be a little pricey (I've seen 10pc lots go for around €14-20), but it will make sure your records and their sleeves have a long shelf life and stay protected from any unwanted grossness.
The left picture is a slipcase, which can be easily removed from the sleeve when you want to play a record. The right picture is a resealable bag type slipcase, often used for records you'd rather just keep on the shelf.
These are anti-static inner sleeves meant for the record itself. They keep your record from attracting dust and serve as a way of ultimate protection within the sleeve. These days a lot of records come packaged with rough cardboard or paper sleeves, try to replace these to prevent scratches.

    2. How to grab and handle records

You definitely don't want to be that guy on a record convention or in a record store that grabs all the records by their grooves to inspect them. I see lots of people grab records like a piece of paper, which is not what you should be doing!

(Here is a demonstration with an old beat up record, sorry MJ)

Never grab a record by its grooves, your fingers often have a lot of grease and sweat in it even if you yourself don't notice it, you dont want that filth on your records!
Hold them by the edges instead, only touching the outside rim with your palms, and when holding it with one hand or when getting it out of it's sleeve, keep it suspended between your fingertips on the label and your thumb gently on the rim.

    - Dropping the needle.

I do not advice dropping the needle directly onto your record when it's turning. I often see it done on tv in movies and such, but it can actually damage and scratch your record if it skids across the surface. Most players have a drop button or a hook on the arm to drop the needle softly on the record by itself, use it!

    3. Cleaning

I see a lot of people struggle to keep their records clean. As a record collector, cleaning your records is very important to keep them in a good shape, especially if you play them a lot or buy a lot of second hand vinyl.
Now, I know not everyone has the money or access to an okkinokki (high end record cleaner that can go up to €500-€1000) but there are other hand washing substitutes:
I myself own a Knosti hand washing kit as shown here on the left, they are easier to come by in europe but I've also seen almost identical Knoxgear sets (or some that go by the name Spin Clean) like the one on the right pop up on american Amazon. They are very easy to use and are usually within a budget of €50-€80. Why do I recommend this specific type? I personally think these work the best for hand washing and are the most stable to use, especially for beginners. They aren't finnicky or unstable in use so the chance that something will go wrong is very small. You can also get spray bottles of anti-static liquid that you can apply with a very soft cloth, but those are not meant for real deep cleaning like the Knosti and Knoxgear.
I also recommend getting an anti-static brush like this:
They can be used if there is just a tiny bit of dust or grime on your record before playing, you can let it glide over the record as it's turning on the player. There are also smaller ones available to gently clean your needle with, which is just as important as keeping your records clean!

Alright! These are just some of my tips I can think of right now, if there are any other questions feel free to ask them and I'll see what I can do ❤

(Disclaimer: Obviously my way isn't the only way, if you really are serious about record collecting, go onto forums or even the vinyl reddit to see tips and look for advice!)

    Played music loud last night.

    It was fun.

First up was Boz Scaggs "out of the blues".

That got my wife and I in the mood for blues so next up we played a rare LP of "Wild Root Orchestra." They have probably the best version of Sing sing sing out there. The drum solo is epic.

Ya we had some wine in us from dinner.

It was loud and clear and great sound. CD and streamers eat your FN hearts out!

I was thinking there are a lot of impediments to going Vinyl. There are many turntables out there with good ones starting at $300 bucks. Even less if they do not realize what they have. Expensive ones are up just over a grand, but easily as good as the crazy boutique units that cost more than a car. That is almost the easiest part.

Preamps with a Phono input are not really rare, but some are overpriced. I cannot get over people wanting $500 ish for Dynaco Pas 2s and 3s (60 year old tube design). A good tube or hybrid preamp is more, but you make your choice. There are quite a few transistor preamps that are really good and under $300 ish around here.

Those are the main things to add to a system (or base one on) to get the vinyl spinning. Amplifiers and speakers do not care where the signal comes from.

Then the big thing is software as in the plastic that holds the music.

I have around 500 albums. Over a long time I spent lots of cash on them. Recent purchases have cost between $15, and $40 bucks. Back in the day they were not that much cheaper. A new issue of Fleetwood Mac in 1976 was around 12 bucks I think. I spent more on my classical Deutche Grammaphones in the mid teens of dollars. Expensive imports you know.

It would take 10grand to replace them at an average of 20 bucks. Some are worth a lot more.

I have a box with about 20 albums by the turntable that are a mix of new and old. $500 ish bucks worth.

The vinyl is a wall to climb that is sure. As I never gave up on LPs I have avoided that problem. My recent obsession is turntables. I have three and can't resist looking for more rare birds. Occasionally a B&O deck show up in the ads. They are soooo pretty. Most recent lust object is a Sony tangential tracker with an electronically damped tonearm. Very cool. Not cheap. Probably worth it. Problem is I have other tables not being used and I cannot sell them for what I want to.

Thing is as it sits I am doing really well with my system. Changes of one or two pieces of equipment will not make that much difference. I rationalize my browsing by thinking replacing something if it fails.
