Norman Lindsay - Remember the Eighth! “I thought I heard a coo-ee!”  The Bulletin, February 16, 1944; Sammy, “Wal, boys, I guess there’s room in her for me somewheres.”

Norman Alfred Williams Lindsay (1879 – 1969) was a versatile and prolific Australian artist, working as a painter, cartoonist, illustrator, etcher, sculptor and author. Lindsay was masterful with his drawing and painting technique, but his talent was often overshadowed by the controversy created by his works depicting paganism, eroticism, and attacking society's attitudes and morals. Lindsay was born in Creswick, Victoria and moved with his family to Melbourne. He tried attending drawing classes at the National Gallery School but quit after a few months. He began drawing for newspapers and worked as a ghost illustrator for his brother Lionel. Norman later attended life drawing classes and Lionel taught him how to etch. Norman focused on light and colour as he developed proficiency in watercolour and oils. Lindsay moved to New South Wales in 1901 where he worked for many years as the chief cartoonist for the Sydney Bulletin, his works often commenting on politics and society. His first novel was published in 1913. Lindsay became the highest paid Australian artist of is time.

Discovering the lost Australian soldiers from Gallipoli

In 2008, after years of searching, Lambis Englezos found the lost diggers of Fromelles: more than 200 Australian soldiers who were hastily buried in a mass grave during the First World War. Despite government and bureaucratic resistance, Lambis proved the bodies were there. Subsequently the diggers were exhumed, given proper burials, and many finally identified, to the great comfort of their families. Now Lambis has done it again. For the past four years he's honed in on what he believes is the mass grave of 143 Australian soldiers on the Gallipoli peninsula. And you won't believe it, but once again our government is turning its back.

    A war of words

    New item:

Thirty years ago when Hamish McDonald was Asia Correspondent for the Sydney Morning Herald in Japan, he was given a box of papers by a departing journalist. The box contained a large manuscript and photographs that detailed the amazing life of Charles Bavier. Born in Japan in the late 1800s, the illegitimate son of a Swiss businessman, Charles was brought up by his father's Japanese mistress, before setting off on an odyssey that took him into China's republican revolution against the Manchus, the ANZAC assault on Gallipoli and British counter-intelligence in pre-war Malaya. Bavier's journey finally led him into a little-known Allied psych-war against Japan as part of the vicious Pacific War, where his unique knowledge of Japanese culture and language made him man of the hour.

me, when i was younger: and these guys are COOL SCI-FI MILITARY who are DEFENDING the human race!! what heroes!!!!

me, now, much older: the military industrial complex is profit motivated and to represent this they now work for a private military company, the excuse of following orders is a way to dodge the moral complications involved with war, and it ruins everyone who goes into it, even if they have good intentions, and go in for the right reasons. but also there are sci-fi lasers and power armour

#there's also an ot3 #they're nat/sam/jesse #i love them very much #nat is the wide eyed idealist who goes in to Fight for Her People and Country #(over time she realises she is not doing these things) #(she's Asian American with a big chip on her shoulder) #jesse is the one who follows her out of loyalty but is jaded and hates who he's become #(he's the techie support who rarely trusts authority) #(he's Jewish Australian) #sam was raised in the military life by two soldiers #he was literally raised to do this and thinks duty is the only thing he's good for #he is very good at killing people. this is a Plot Point. #(he is Mexican and trans) #(i think sam's my favourite honestly) #for the absolute longest time they were not an ot3 but they just WORKED very well #my stuff
