Axl and Slash 1986
@arnold-layne @smokeandmirrorz alright star wars au, so here's what I'm thinking so far:
Slash as Leia, Axl as Luke
Axl gows up in the dry, barren flatlands of Tattooine, where everybody knows everybody and the only viable ventures are water farming and crime. Life as a simple farmboy doesn't suit him, when he gets sucked into a rebel plot he gladly leaves Tattooine behind and doesn't look back – at least, not until he later discovers dark family secrets that force him to change the way he understood his entire upbringing.
Slash is a prince – he's smart, practical, and very independent, fortunate enough to grow up with loving adoptive parents. But he's also a bit wild, he doesn't take well to being told what to do and really it's no surprise that he ends up involved with the rebellion.
Duff is smuggler, he's not afraid to take some risks to get ahead and he doesn't take bullshit for anyone – at least, until he meets a farmboy with a chip on his shoulder and an apparent death wish, and a stubborn prince who's good at seemingly everything except interpersonal relationships. Duff has way too much heart to let them go on alone, but sometimes the constant insanity of his new friends' lives makes him miss the days when all he had to worry about was paying off his debt to a giant alien slug.
Maybe Izzy is Obi Wan? He worries that Axl's temper might make him easily swayed to the dark side, and when Yoda argues that Slash would be a better candidate for jedi training Izzy insists that Axl can handle it. Losing Izzy has a huge, lasting impact on Axl.
The post-original-trilogy storyline works out pretty well too – Slash receives some Jedi training from Axl because of course he's not going to pass up the chance to learn how to use the force and fight with a lightsaber. But eventually Axl disappears and becomes a recluse, while Slash stays in the forefront and becomes the head of the resistance.
Of course, not everything would be the same as star wars canon. For example, Slash is a better pilot than Axl, flying x-wings is his favorite way to get his adrenaline fix, but even though he's reckless as hell he's a very good pilot.
As much as I love the idea of Slash with Leia's buns, I think that wearing his hair long and loose instead of in tidy, formal buns and braids would be a defiant gesture for him (probably a result of his royal upbringing). He insists on wearing his hair loose whenever he can get away with it, usually with just a few small braids tied together at the back of his head.
