in The Gang Exploits The Mortgage Crisis, Charlie wears two tarot card shirts (The Tower and The Devil) in the first two scenes he appears in and I suspect it wasn’t coincidental
according to wikipedia The Tower is the 16th Major Arcana card and represents “sudden, disruptive revelation, and potentially destructive change.“
in the scene Charlie wears that shirt, he and Dennis are arguing about bird law at the bar when Dee comes in and tries to share some news that the guys don’t care about. Frank then abruptly comes in with the news that he’s bought a house and plans to flip it. Dee then (disruptively) screams she’s having a baby. the only thing i can think of is that Charlie wore The Tower to symbolize those “revelations” (that turned out to be very destructive in the episode)?
again thanks to wikipedia: The Devil is the 15th Major Arcana card and represents “being seduced by the material world and physical pleasures; lust for and an obsession with money and power. Also: Living in fear, domination and bondage; being caged by an overabundance of luxury; discretion should be used in personal and business matters.”
in that scene the guys threaten a scared family into moving out so they can flip the house and make a boatload of cash. Dennis says, “Absolutely, we could cave the husband's skull in here. Yes, we could take the wife down to the basement, have a frenzied free-for-all with her. We could tie the kids up in their rooms so they wouldn't hear any of it... We could smear the walls with [the kids’] blood.” - this has themes of both domination and bondage. however, Dennis/The Gang ultimately decides it would be easier to simply get the deed than to kill the family - remember that a definition of discretion is “the freedom to decide what should be done in a particular situation.”
also, Frank threatens the family/kids which prompts Charlie to say, “What happens if you accidentally hit a child with an umbrella? In the eyes of the law, that is child abuse. What happens then? In the eyes of the law, you have to give your properties to the parents of that child.” at the end of the episode Frank ends up responsible for the fact the kids cut their hands on copper wires and he ended up having to give the house back. perhaps The Devil was forewarning the discretion Frank should have used in this particular business matter?
(if anyone who’s actually well informed about tarot cards is reading this, feel free to add on/correct me)
i still have questions though
why did the wardrobe department/RCG/Charlie Day go through the effort to do this? for the rest of the episode Charlie wore perfectly normal shirts so who saw the script for the first two scenes and thought “you know what tarot cards would symbolize this perfectly...” (i’m assuming they chose these shirts deliberately). are these two shirts things a fan sent in (apparently Rob likes to wear shirts people send in so i assume Charlie Day does too sometimes) or did they go looking for these specific tarot shirts to go with these scenes? ,, also where are these from because they’re actually neat designs imo
