I wouldn’t actually recommend Obernewtyn as a series for a whole number of reasons but it does have an amazing fantasy but sci fi atmosphere. Also it’s post apocalypse but it gradually involves more and more pre apocalypse tech in a world that has actually decided to be low tech so the protagonist is interacting with advanced technology but it’s from the past and it’s extremely cool world building.

#book: obernewtyn #I love the series but it also has a whole bunch of Not Great and I am still upset at the ending #but it’s fascinating worldbuilding #(I can’t actually reread them anymore so I couldn’t give real specifics but yeah) #(also it’s sort of ambiguous if it’s actually just straight sci fi or fantasy-sci-fi which is cool) #(does contain talking animals)

There’s actually a book series in which they call the pre dystopia times The Beforetime and like I don’t know that I’d recommend the series exactly but I feel like tumblr should know this.

#book: obernewtyn #it was one of those series I grew up with and it’s got #*it’s got a lot of great things but I would also caveat that uh Not Great #(like the author started it in 1987 the year I was born so yeah it shows) #(but it does do some fascinating worldbuilding but also I can’t read it anymore)

Sometimes I get sad that there isn’t much of a fandom for Isobelle Carmody and her books, but it just occurred to me that, if I keep thinking that and not posting about it, I’m not helping it grow! The more people who post about it, the more a fandom might grow. So, hello, I love Obernewtyn and Legendsong!

I just realised in thinking about fantasy books that feature farming to rec to @star-anise that I would have absolutely read the Obernewtyn series that was just like about the farming and governance etc building/rebuilding because that is COOL and I could have totally just read that without the needing to save the world quest.

#book: obernewtyn #lils book feels #lil and her ridiculous aus #i say fantasy but its like ‘sci-fi/fantasy rebuilding after an apocalypse’

I don't know how to write an ending.

Over the course of my reading life, I've read hundreds upon hundreds of fantasy books.

But so few had an actual end. I'd find cliffhanger after cliffhanger. Trilogy after trilogy. Books too mediocre for me to ask the library to get the rest of the series. There were even a few books that had the rest of their sequels cancelled.

One of my favorite series as a child was Obernewtyn by Isobella Carmody. I owned the first six books but the last two weren't published in the USA (my country) for years. Even a single year is excruciatingly long at that age. I didn't have access to those books. Every yuletide and birthday I asked for that series. They never came.

Then I got an Amazon account. The first things I did was buy music and buy the final ebooks to that series.

It's been 12 years, but I'll be damned if I don't finish at least that series.

That's why I like standalone books. But they are so rare in the fantasy genre.

Now, all those missing endings afflict me. I don't know how to write an ending. I was going along, reading a short story I wrote, and then it stopped. It didn't end. It just ... stopped.

Now I have to go back and finish the thing, because apparently it wasn't good enough the third time.

    Chazza Writes Challenge Day 21

Is your writing style and/or WIP influenced by a particular book or author?

Magic Keepers was pretty heavily inspired by Eragon by Christopher Paolini. I was super obsessed with it at the time, and it was what got me into reading and writing fantasy. I’m trying to make the similarities a little less obvious, but some of them are still there if you look for them.

New Vellarton was inspired by a couple different books. I think one of the main ones was the Obernewtyn Chronicles by Isobelle Carmody. It’s got a similar premise- kids with illegal powers get sent off to a secluded place that’s just for them. The execution is pretty different though. It was also a little bit inspired by X-Men, mostly in terms of the powers and how they work.

The Harry Potter Series and The Obernewtyn Chronicles are both collections of Seven Books. But I want my readers to be thinking about the Sacraments of the Church. There are Seven. (Five’s hard work. Which two were removed?) There’s Baptism, Confirmation, Reconciliation, Eucharist, Holy Orders, Marriage, Anointing the Sick.

tag people you want to get to know better

tagged by @piyo-13, hey thanks! :D

your name and then what you would have named yourself: Dani, and... idk, I’ve never felt disconnected from that! I do enjoy going by cap online, though.

astrological sign (sun/moon/rising if you know them): scorpio

when did you join tumblr and why?: 2017, I may be relatively baby on here but I did see the porn ban. I joined looking for feminist and women-friendly ‘nerdy’ spaces that weren’t reddit (because no matter how hard I tried to curate my reddit experience, awful people always insisted on ruining everything)

top 5 fandoms: I really don’t/haven’t participated in fandom outside of mdzs but in terms of other stuff I’m always happy to see on my dash... critical role, ATLA, ghibli films, star trek?

top 5 favorite films: aside from the fact that it’s impossible to choose... Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Alien, Howl’s Moving Castle, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, The Fall

go to song when you wanna Feel something: I mean, which thing! there’s different songs for different feelings! But if I want to feel good and energised it’s The Real Thing by Client Liaison. Edit: okay I’ve thought about this for like an hour and my new answer is Problems (JEFFE cover) by Petit biscuit. As soon as that one starts playing I always feel a thing.

what’s your religion or faith if you have one?: n/a

a song that makes you feel seen: maybe Free by Rudimental feat. Emeli Sande?

if you could have any career: I mean, who among us doesn’t want to make a living as a writer? but I’ll settle for making myself permanently a librarian

do you have a type?: kind men, strong women

what does your heart/soul yearn for: peace

if you had to describe yourself in 5 words to someone who doesn’t know you: big sister/heart/ideas/idk

favorite subjects in school: in primary/secondary school? english! tertiary school? okay still my lit classes, but also screen studies

where does your soul feel most at home: in the middle of the night when everything is still

top 5 fictional characters: Lup (TAZ: Balance), Captain Janeway (Star Trek: Voyager), Yu Shu Lien (CTHD), Scully (X Files), BMO (Adventure Time)

top 3 moments in a show that made you ugly cry: I know this has happened a bunch of times, why can I not think of any! Okay a few I can remember - the end of Oh! My Emperor, even though I saw it coming/knew what was going to happen; the ending of The Good Place; and I cry every single time I watch Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (which I apparently have on the brain today, since it’s in 50% of my answers for this post). I’d say Fatal Journey but I refuse to accept that as canon :)

the earth, the sun, the moon or the stars: the moon, does she know i love her?

favorite kind of weather: a really juicy thunderstorm, heavy rain, it’s warm enough that you can have the windows open to enjoy it but cool enough that you’re not sweaty about it

top 3 characters you kin with: uhhhhhh not sure I’m the kind of person to ‘kin’ anything, but characters I relate to would include Sophie from Howl’s Moving Castle, Tilly from Star Trek Discovery, Judge Judy (that last one’s aspirational).

favorite medium of art: the written word

introvert/extrovert/ambivert: introvert but I ‘pass’ for sociable

a favorite literary quote: a grim one, but something I haven’t forgotten (the very last line in particular, but the context is part of the thing of course) in like twenty years so I suppose it has to count, from Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World -

The machine turns, turns and must keep on turning—forever. It is death if it stands still. A thousand millions scrabbled the crust of the earth. The wheels began to turn. In a hundred and fifty years there were two thousand millions. Stop all the wheels. In a hundred and fifty weeks there are once more only a thousand millions; a thousand thousand men and women have starved to death.
Wheels must turn steadily, but cannot turn untended. There must be men to tend them, men as steady as the wheels upon their axles, sane men, obedient men, stable in contentment.
Crying: My baby, my mother, my only, only love; groaning: My sin, my terrible God; screaming with pain, muttering with fever, bemoaning old age and poverty—how can they tend the wheels? And if they cannot tend the wheels… The corpses of a thousand thousand thousand men would be hard to bury or burn.

some of your favorite books: The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers (and the sequels were pretty great too); NK Jemisin’s Broken Earth Trilogy; The Vorkosigan Saga by Lois McMaster Bujold; Stephen King’s The Stand, and the Dark Tower series; Isobelle Carmody’s Obernewtyn Chronicles; uhhhh non-comprehensive list because I’m blanking now.

if you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?: in a daydream? Wales - I love how it looks, and they have the best accent, give me a little farm with some goats. in real? I’m pretty happy right here, though.

if you could live in any time in history when would it be?: yeah as piyo said before me, I don’t think that there would be a point in history that would be kinder to me as someone female-presenting. but if I could visit some time incognito it would be pretty exciting to see something like the library at Alexandria

if you could play any instrument masterfully it would be: the banjo I guess, since I own one (why would someone own an instrument they don’t play? GREAT QUESTION you should ask the ex who gave it to me in an attempt to prove that money could show as much affection as actual affection does)

if you have one, what mythological god or goddess do you feel a connection to: n/a

and lastly, favorite recent selfie in your camera roll: I’m not going to share it, but it’s def one of the pictures of me holding my baby niece :)

tagging (but only if you want to): @megalodont, @aninfiniteweirdo, and.... hmmm who sent in asks and might like to interact @demoiselledefortune, @lefthandsuzukimethod, @queenofsovngarde, and idk anybody who sees this and wants to be friends or has been too shy to interact before? <3

    Title: Obernewtyn:

    The Obernewtyn Chronicles Volume 1

    Author: Isabelle Carmody

    Published by Penguin 1993

    YA Fantasy/Dystopian

This is the first book in a series of six. The first of The Obernewtyn Chronicles written by Isabelle Carmody during high school and while undertaking her first university degree. It was originally published in 1987. I read an eBook version.

Without revealing too much, it starts after a holocaust set in some near future. My curiosity was aided by great writing that delivers the story and events via small reveals interrogating past, present and future. Much of the past has been destroyed or hidden with the establishment of the new world order. The protagonist, Elspeth Gordie, is an orphan with prohibited abilities. When declared a misfit the council sends her to Obernewtyn supposedly to be rehabilitated... and the journey takes off from there.

The revelatory nature of the storying provides a great balance that compels a reader forward and yes I was hooked. I now am invested in the series and need to read the next five books. The sixth one was published in 2015. I’m in absolute awe the author was just fourteen when she started writing this novel!!!

Although, I may have been late to the reading party I am super excited to have started this series. Highly recommended.
