Pioneering research in Brazil proposes the use of energy from the ground to acclimatize buildings

A researcher at the São Carlos School of Engineering assessed whether building foundations can help in the thermal comfort of environments; the first building in the country that will feature the technology has already begun to be built in the city of São Paulo

[Image description: construction of CICS Living Lab, the first building to feature such tech in Brazil.]

For the first time in history, Brazil will have a building that uses energy from the ground to acclimatize its environments. The unprecedented feat is a continuation of innovative research carried out at the São Carlos School of Engineering (EESC) at University of São Paulo, which evaluated the use of building foundations as a means of exchanging thermal energy between the building and the underground. International experience with the use of this technology, based on geothermal energy (from inside the Earth), has reported considerable savings in energy consumption for air conditioning (heating and cooling). Here in Brazil, the expectation with the implementation of this system is that the expenses with the consumption of electricity by air conditioners will be reduced. Baptized as CICS Living Lab, the Brazilian building has already begun to be built at the Escola Politécnica da USP, in São Paulo.

It was the researcher Thaise Morais, from the Department of Geotechnics (SGS) at the EESC, who developed the first Brazilian doctoral thesis to assess the performance of this technology in the conditions of climate and soil in Brazil. She explains that geothermal energy is the one found within the earth's crust, whether in soil, rocks, or even water, and is identified by temperature. This energy can be transferred to the surface by thermal exchange processes from the building foundations. “The temperature in the region that goes from the surface layer of the Earth's crust to a few hundred meters deep is the result of natural interactions that occur between the external environment and the interior of the crust. Thus, the soil works as a kind of battery or thermal energy reservoir.”, describes the specialist.

The country's innovative system captures or rejects heat from/in the ground through the piles that make up the building's foundation. These piles are buried and, as they are in direct contact with the subsoil, they have a large contact area for thermal exchange. Through tubes installed inside and with the help of a fluid, the thermal energy is taken to the surface, where a geothermal pump exchanges heat between the underground and the building's environments. “In the tests, we used drinking water as a fluid to exchange heat between the foundation and the subsoil. The pump exchanges heat with water from another refrigerant that circulates inside it. This exchange is carried out continuously and repetitively until the desired temperature for the environment is reached.”, reports the researcher.

“International experience has shown that this type of system has been efficient and successful in heating or cooling environments and in reducing energy consumption. The use of these structures has been encouraged in Europe by the government in order to reduce expenses and the emission of carbon dioxide.”, recalls Thaise. In Brazil, the novelty does not yet have a defined cost, but in the long term, the investment is offset by savings in electricity costs.

Environmental and economic aspects were the incentive for an Austrian mining engineer to create the heat pump system in 1855. The technology is one of the most sophisticated engineering achievements of the 20th century. “These are simple devices that transport heat at a high level of efficiency. We performed full-scale thermal exchange tests between the foundation and the subsoil at the EESC Foundations Experimental Field, in São Carlos. In addition, we also performed mechanical tests and thermal tests on the ground. The results were very positive.”, says Thaise.

The geothermal energy harnessing system can be applied in all types of buildings. Before that, however, it is necessary to know the thermal properties of the subsoil of that location and analyze the climate conditions and thermal demand of the building. “It is already known that from a few meters deep, the soil temperature practically does not change during the year, although it varies in the external environment, and it is similar to the average annual atmospheric temperature in the place. Brazil is a country of continental extension that presents average annual temperatures that vary according to the region. Therefore, the efficiency of this system, which provides a reduction in the operating costs of buildings in the long term, must vary regionally.”, says the specialist.

The demand for alternative sources of renewable energy has increased worldwide and its use has become commonplace in building projects, which expands the search for technologies that use clean energy. Already applied in other European countries and in the United States for at least 20 years, the geothermal system is one of the fastest growing renewable energy applications on the planet. However, its use had never been studied for implementation in Brazilian territory, which has a different climate from the countries that already used it.

Much of the electricity consumption in Brazil is directed to buildings, with an important portion relating to the use of artificial air conditioning systems. It is also estimated that electricity consumption for air conditioning systems in Brazil will increase from 18.7 Terawatt-hour (TWh) in 2017 to at least 36.8 TWh in 2035. “Demand by artificial air conditioning in Brazilian buildings – whether to heat or cool the environment – is and still will be a considerable portion of the national electricity consumption, generating an impact on generation and on the environment.”, the researcher believes.

The search of Brazilians for a comfortable temperature at home or at work places the country as the fifth largest consumer of air conditioners in the world. Data from the Ministry of Mines and Energy show that between 2005 and 2017, only the Brazilian residential sector more than doubled the ownership of this equipment, having increased its share of total electricity consumption within homes by 7% in 2005, to 14% in 2017. Given the need to reduce electricity consumption with air conditioning in Brazil, the system based on exchanging thermal energy with the subsoil from the foundations can be an alternative to traditional air conditioning systems.

The studies carried out at the EESC, which began in 2014, were funded by the Foundation for Research Support of the State of São Paulo (Fapesp), via a research project coordinated by Professor Cristina Tsuha, who was Thaise's advisor, and by the National Council of Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), which granted a doctoral scholarship to the researcher. Thaise's thesis won the Costa Nunes Award from the Brazilian Association of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering as the best doctoral thesis of the 2018-2019 biennium. The researcher, who competed with works from all over the country and from different areas of Geotechnics, celebrated the recognition. “In addition to representing the importance of my work, the victory also ends up promoting the innovation and relevance of implementing this type of system in Brazil. We are on the right path.”, she concludes.

The building under construction at USP, in São Paulo, is financed by the Center for Innovation in Sustainable Construction (CICS-USP), which is an ecosystem of business and academic representatives dedicated to accelerating innovation, sustainability and productivity in construction civil.

The building will be used by the Polytechnic School as a “living laboratory”, where new sustainable technologies and new materials will be tested. The works are currently halted due to the pandemic, but should be resumed as soon as possible.

Brazil looks at extending expiry date of J&J COVID vaccines

[Image description: bottles of Johnson & Johnson covid-19 vaccines.]

Brazil’s health regulator Anvisa met with representatives of Johnson & Johnson subsidiary Janssen on Friday to discuss extending the expiry date of a batch of 3 million doses of its COVID vaccine bought by the South American nation.

The batch of vaccines expires on June 27.

Janssen is proposing extending the expiry to four-and-a-half months from three at present, as approved on Thursday by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Anvisa said in a statement.

The health regulator is expected to follow the FDA’s approval. A decision will come next week, Anvisa said.

A departure on the Brazilian classic, I love the way these turned out. The raspberry cuts through the sweetness and gives them a little sharp bite I find quite pleasant. If brigadeiros are new to you, I urge you to make a batch. You can start from the traditional version, or go straight for this dressed up variation.
