The Secret Life of Pets 2 moves quickly and its jokes will make your children laugh. It contains a few original and clever moments. That doesn’t mean I enjoyed it. In fact, I couldn’t stand it.

Set some time after the events of the first film, Max (Patton Oswalt) and Duke (Eric Stonestreet) have their life turned upside down when their owner, Katie (Ellie Kemper), gets married and has a baby. Just when they think they’ve got this new living arrangement handled, the family goes on a vacation where they meet tough sheepdog Rooster (voiced by Harrison Ford), who puts them both to shame. While they’re away, Gidget (Jenny Slate) attempts to retrieve Max’s cherished toy from an apartment filled with cats. To do this, she’ll need the help and tutoring of cat Chloe (Lake Bell). Meanwhile, rabbit Snowball (Kevin Hart) has become obsessed with superheroes and is recruited Shih Tzu Daisy (Tiffany Haddish) to rescue a white tiger from his abusive circus master.

The Secret Life of Pets 2 hardly feels like a movie. It feels like a bunch of episodes from a TV show stitched together. There are some laughs in the scenes where Chloe trains Gidget to “become a cat”. They’re still hardly worthy of the big screen. You just sit there… waiting. “When is the plot going to kick in? This is an awful lot of setup and this film is going in so many directions I wonder how they’ll connect them all.” Well, the plot never kicks in. There is no true story, just a bunch of things happening to an assortment of talking animals doing Saturday morning cartoon antics. All of the characters’ stories are completely independent, making it impossible for you to tell how far into the movie you are at any point. This felt so much longer than 86 minutes.

Visually, it’s fine. Tiffany Haddish’s character is well designed. Overall the various animals are nice and distinct. I don’t think there’s anything here that’ll stick with you the way that hotdog scene from the first movie did, meaning this sequel is forgettable. But then, it ends on a double-whammy worthy of the trash can: a mid-credit rap courtesy of Kevin Hart, followed immediately by YouTube videos of pets doing funny things. These are cheap tricks to fool audiences. “I remember being bored… but I left with a smile, so I guess I liked it!”

If your kids are clamoring to see The Secret Life of Pets 2, they’ll probably enjoy it more than I did (wouldn’t be hard). Skip the 3D, however. Illumination is usually really good at making stuff pop! off the screen but not today. The best way to show this to your children is at home so they can be kept busy for an hour and a half while you get some cleaning done. (3D Theatrical version on the big screen, June 11, 2019)

    usa 2017

    regie: pierre coffin, kyle balda

    drehbuch: brian lynch

    musik: heitor peirera

  • Phil Woods | Mile High Jazz: Live In Denver

This is the first album I’ve picked up by alto saxophonist Phil Woods, who played in a number of big bands and has also led a successful career as a bandleader.  While Woods is a multi-instrumentalist who frequently doubles on flute, he only plays saxophone on this particular album.  He is accompanied here by trumpeter Brian Lynch, pianist Bill Charlap (my man!), bassist Steve Gilmore, and drummer Bill Goodwin.  I’d call this a hard bop album, with heavily swinging tunes and fast, complex chord changes.  Woods, Charlap, and Lynch each contribute an original, and the other half of the set is lesser-heard standards (Earle Hagen’s Harlem Nocturne, George Wallington’s Godchild, and Benny Carter’s Walkin’ Thing).
