The next day, we’re all anxiously awaiting Peter’s arrival. He must be some guy if Tony wants to recruit him so bad. Wanda and I are watching Mamma Mia! in the main living area as we wait. Nat introduced me to the movie and I love it. It’s not typically her kind of movie, but she thought I’d like it, especially since she could introduce me to a well known movie and ABBA.
FRIDAY’s voice echos above us. “Mr. Parker has arrived. He’s at the main entrance with Mr. Hogan. Mr. Stark would like you all to meet Mr. Parker.”
Wanda and I exchange glances and get up. “You think he’ll like the team?” Wanda asks.
I can only smile. “Absolutely.”
Once outside, Stark motions us over. Clint, Nat, and Steve are already outside, talking to Peter.
“And these two are Neveah and Wanda,” he motions to us both and tangent turns back to Peter, “They’re close to your age, you can make some new friends.” He clasps his hand on Peter’s shoulder with a chuckle.
Reaching out his hand, he says, “Hi, I’m Peter Parker, it’s really nice to meet you both.”
I return his handshake, “It’s nice to meet you too, sorry if Tony’s been a lot to handle.”
I laugh as Tony makes a face. Wanda also shakes his hand and says hello.
Tony motions to all of us. “You guys wanna come with while I show him around?”
A chorus of “sure’s” and “yes’s” comes from us.
“Alright, kid. Let’s get on with the tour.”
“And so, when you do stay here, your room will be on this floor. Wanda and Neveah also live here. You guys can have some kid bonding time or whatever,” Tony says.
I flip Tony off as I grab some water from the sink.
“Each floor has a little living area so if you need anything, like at night, you don’t have to go far,” I say to Peter after taking a sip of my water.
“And if you really need something, you can always ask FRIDAY,” Tony explains, “Oh that reminds me, FRIDAY, give Peter security clearance to the compound.”
“Right away Mr. Stark.”
“Oh, and Peter, I’ve been working on a suit for you. I think you’ll like it.”
Peter lights up. “Really? Can I look at it? Maybe help? I’ve been developing some new web shooters and I’d love to show you-“
Stark smiles, “Woah, slow down kid. Of course you can see it. I’ll show you the lab. The other floors of the living quarters are pretty much the same.”
Looking back at us, he says, “You guys don’t have to come for this part if you don’t want to.”
Nat whispers to me, “See? Soft.” I giggle.
“You guys can go down. Steele, Maximoff, you’re training with me and Nat today.”
Waving goodbye to Peter and Tony, we walk with Cap and Nat to the training area.
“We want to work on your powers,” Steve explains, “Sorry. That came off bad. We want to work on strengthening and controlling them. Both of your abilities are very emotion driven and very powerful. We want you to be the best you can be.”
“You sound like you’re doing one of those high school videos again, Rogers,” Nat says, laughing.
Steve just rolls his eyes. “These rooms we have here are meant to withstand the limits of your powers, we’re gonna work in them for today. One of you will be paired with one of us, and then we’ll switch. Don’t worry about hurting us, we know you won’t.”
Wanda shifts beside me. I know she gets nervous about using her powers around the team after what happened on the African coast. She bumps my shoulder slightly with hers. Shit. And she’s a mind reader.
“Steele, you’re with me first,” Cap says, “We’ll take this room,” he says, motioning to the one to the far right out of the tree rooms their are. Natasha and Wanda go into the one on the far left.
Once inside, he explains the exercise. “I know you’ve got a good handle on your accuracy when it comes to shooting at people, but I wanna work on distributing that power into close range attacks. I’ve seen you do it before.”
I nod. “Shouldn’t you be in something more… fireproof?” I ask.
“The last few times I’ve seen you increase your own strength, there wasn’t any fire. I’ll be fine.”
He gets into a fighting position and I mimic him. “We’re gonna work on distributing that power to different parts of your body, okay?”
“Okay, put some power in your fist and hit me.”
My eyes widen, he laughs, “Don’t worry, you won’t hurt me.”
Channeling as much firepower into my hand, the veins in my arm and hand become a dull blue. I punch Steve as hard as I can and he goes flying into the back wall.
“Shit!! I’m sorry Steve I-“
“No, no, that was really good! That’s what we’re working on too, control. I know you can pack a punch, but now we can work on controlling the output.”
For the next hour Steve gets punched around as we try and dial in my ability to control the amount of power I put into my fist. By the end of it, I’ve started to get it down.
“Alright, let’s try it again, but this time, with your leg.”
I run at him, and jump up, kicking him in the ribs.
“That was great! You’re really getting a handle on this. Once you’ve got a strong grip on this, you’ll be able to surprise your opponents in close quarters combat.”
He puts a hand on my shoulder. “Seriously, you’ve come a long way since we first fought. And I’m happy that you’re on our side now.”
“Thanks Cap,” I say with a smile. I continue, “It’s been helping me feel less like HYDRA’s dog; being here, training with the team, I mean.”
He smiles and says, “I’m glad. Now, go put what we worked on today to the test against Romanoff.”
Wanda walks in to the room, “Natasha said we’re switching now…?”
“Yeah, Neveah was just about to head out. Let’s see what you can do, Maximoff,” Steve says with a smile.
“Good luck,” I say as I walk out, “Take it easy on the old man though, will you?”
“I heard that!”
Laying down on the mat, I wipe sweat off my forehead. Nat lays down beside me. “Good job today. Steve did a good job of helping you out,” she says, “But you don’t have to tell him I said that.”
I laugh, “If you call him volunteering to be my punching bag, ‘help,’ then yeah, he was incredible.”
“What do you think of Peter?” I ask.
“He seems like a good kid, he’ll also be another good brain to have around. I’m excited for him, but selfishly I wish he could have a normal life.”
“I get what you mean, he just seems so wide-eyed and innocent.”
“Yeah, hopefully he won’t loose his heart.”
I smile a little. “I doubt he will, he seems like deep down, he really is a good guy.”
Nat moves to stand up, offering me a hand once she’s on her feet. “I’m starving. Want a sandwich?”
“PB&J?” I ask.
“You know it,” she says switch a smirk.
“Then yes, absolutely.”
