Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band Reissue Review: The Legendary 1979 No Nukes Concerts

As much as Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band’s two concerts in September 1979 at Madison Square Garden were a celebration, they represented a turning point for The Boss himself. The Legendary 1979 No Nukes Concerts combines material from these shows, which were organized by Musicians United for Safe Energy (MUSE) as part of their efforts to fight the use of nuclear energy. At the time in Springsteen’s career, he had recently released Darkness on the Edge of Town, the insular follow-up to his rousing breakout Born to Run, and he was working on what would become The River, still his greatest heartland rock epic to date. All of these elements--the retro swings and shuffles of his early days, the everyman stadium shout-alongs, and the empathy for economic struggles in a world of political greed and xenophobia--come to play.

For Springsteen, giving a crowd its money’s worth has always been, in a sense, a political statement; as rich as he’s become and even as successful as he was around his 30th birthday in 1979, he knows his fans pay to see him and deserve something great back, especially when the U.S. government shirks its responsibility to provide them their most basic needs. To that end, No Nukes is a party first and foremost. Springsteen starts the set with a classic count-off as the E Street Band launches into the hard-charging “Prove It All Night”, his passionate, throaty vocal delivery at its breakneck best. Clarence Clemons and Steven Van Zandt rip sax and guitar solos, and Max Weinberg’s drumming is limber as ever. And the one-two punch of “Badlands” and “The Promised Land” show why they’ve since become such gravel-pitted live anthems.

It must have been a risk, then, to not only introduce two new songs so early in the set, but one as solemn as The River’s introspective, semi-biographical title track. Telling the story of his sister’s teen pregnancy in matter-of-fact detail, Springsteen carries the weight on his shoulders entering the mind of the narrator as he sings with defeat, “I got Mary pregnant, and man that was all she wrote.” Songs like this--as opposed to rambunctious The River tunes like “Sherry Darling”, the next performed song on No Nukes--would foreshadow the darkness and depression of Nebraska, but Springsteen doesn’t allow it to break the momentum of a live set. If anything, it’s a necessary respite between “The Promised Land” and a circling, almost exhausting “Sherry Darling”.

The rest of the show returns to that party atmosphere and truly shows the E Street Band at the height of their powers, Springsteen the ultimate showman. When he lets the crowd sing on “Thunder Road”, “Jungleland”, and “Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)”, they fill the stadium, even more so in verses than in choruses, the ultimate sign of fandom. Yes, the show’s got what you expect, from Clemons’ triumphant sax solo in “Jungleland” to a blistering main set closer of “Born To Run”, but most impressive is the nonstop collection of covers at the end. Jackson Browne, Tom Petty, and Rosemary Butler join for Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs’ “Stay”, a who’s who of heartland rockers looking further in the past, while Danny Federici and Roy Bittan show their keyboard chops on a “Detroit Medley” rife with “Devil With the Blue Dress On” and “Good Golly Miss Molly”. If anything, Springsteen’s shtick when the band stops and starts again is worth reminiscing about because if he today said anything like, “I’ve been asked by management to make a medical emergency announcement” to jokingly warn how intense the playing is about to be, he’d probably get sued. And Weinberg’s swinging drums lead a stellar version of Gary U.S. Bonds’ “Quarter to Three” before the whole band turns Sonny West’s “Rave On” into a punk barnburner. No Nukes seems, with today’s ears, like the peak of Springsteen’s unmistakable balance between old school and new school, the idea that you could write intelligent, thoughtful, socially aware songs to pump your fist to.

With New Album on the Way, Neil Young “Not Ready” to Play Live

    - “It’s not under control,” Young says of ongoing COVID-19 pandemic

    “I’m not ready.”

Those are the words of Neil Young, the Farm Aid board member who pulled out of the 2021 in-person benefit concert and will release Barn, his latest album with Crazy Horse, Dec. 10.

He will not support the LP on the road.

Speaking with Rolling Stone about all that and more, Young says the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic makes touring a bad idea.

“It’s not the right time for it,” Young said. “We don’t know where we are or what we’re doing. A lot of people can go home and get their kids sick. It’s just not right yet.”

Young wishes world leaders - specifically presidents Biden, Xi and Putin - would “do a press conference together about the coronavirus. They should just make a big statement about what people should do.”

The pandemic, Young says, needs to be under control before he even thinks about stepping on stage in front of an audience.

“It’s not under control,” he said.

“I don’t want people to see me out there and think I think everything is OK,” Young said. “I don’t think everything is OK.”

A Very Special Christmas (1987 album)

A Very Special Christmas (1987 album)

Back in 1987, a charity album was released titled A Very Special Christmas. The album featured renditions of Christmas classics by some of the biggest names in music at that time and the proceeds went to Special Olympics. The album was the brainchild of music producer Jimmy Iovine, who wanted to produce a Christmas album as a memorial to his father. The idea of the record benefiting Special…
