HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!
a/n: hello there, take this small piece in honour of the precious bastard's bday (*´︶`*)ฅ♡
warnings: gn!reader, fluff, crack, gets suggestive in the slightest right at the end
his words stopped in his mouth, tumbling between his teeth as he closed and then opened it, reminding you of a fish that ended up on shore by mistake.
you looked absolutely stunning, all dolled-up and dressed for your lover to enjoy, the finishing piece being the colorful cone that sat clumsily on the top of your head.
"–home?" you smile sheepishly and run up to him, kissing his lips with a fervor that he hasn't seen in a while.
"well, well, well, if somebody isn't dressed up tonight" he smiled, eyes raking all over your body.
"aw, you like it?" you giggle, grabbing his hand and taking a step back to twirl in front of him.
dazai didn't know what had gotten into you, since you normally didn't behave like this, but it wasn't too far from how you usually acted when you were genuinely excited, so he decided to just sit back and enjoy it.
"yes, sweetheart, i like it a bunch. actually, i love it." he smiled, twirling you again, this time counter-clockwise, pulling you into his arms afterwards and kissing your forehead gently.
"well, since i'm looking all nice and pretty on your birthday, let's go out somewhere so it doesn't go to waste, hm?" you suggest as you dreamily think of the desset from that fancy-ass restaurant around the corner, two minutes away the main plaza.
dazai looked down at you, and all of a sudden a question popped up in his mind.
"are you wearing anything," he said, gesticulating towards your outfit. "under this?"
tsk, he got me.
"well, why don't you find out after we have dinner, how 'bout that?" you try to smooth over the wrinkles of his shirt, doing your best to ignore how the man's stare turned hungry and primal in an instant.
"osamu– oi what are you doing? put me down!" you squeak as he suddenly throws you over his shoulder, fancy date night at the restaurant long forgotten.
he just smirks and starts carrying you towards your shared bedroom.
"dazai. dazai! dazai, my baby, dinner's not in that direction," you sigh, trying to gain control over the situation one last time.
"what do you mean, dinner's right here!" he says as he pats your butt enthusiastically.
"jesus christ, 'samu."
happy birthday to me, he thought, content with the current turn of events.

Part One || Masterlist
"Isn't this exciting, Atsushi? It's almost like a mini vacation!" There was a smile on your cute, chubby face, your eyes sparking in excitement as you stared out the train window as the scenery blurred by.
Atsushi sat across from you, a soft laugh leaving his mouth as his yellow eyes looked at you fondly. "You know, we're only going to help solve a case, not for fun," he reminded you, making you huff and pout.
"So... we can still have fun. We'll be there for an entire week!"
Indeed you were. You two were taking the train to a town a few hours away from Yokohama, to help with a case they've been struggling with. Expecting for it to still take some time, a hotel was arranged for the two of you to stay.
"What hotel are we staying at anyway?" Atsushi asked you, tilting his head. "You were the one who booked it, right?"
"Oh, not me," you waved your hand at him. "It was Dazai."
Atsushi blinked. "D- You let Dazai book the hotel?"
You raised an eyebrow, wondering why Atsushi was reacting this way. "Yeah? He said he knew a good one?" Atsushi heaved a sigh and you frowned at him. "What? I'm sure it's fine, right?"
It was not fine, for after another hour on the train and fifteen minutes in a taxi, you and Atsushi stood outside probably one of the most grandest hotels either of you have ever seen. Both your jaws were on the floor, and with shaking hands, Atsushi called the man who was responsible.
"Uh, is this the right hotel, Dazai?" Atsushi asked into the phone, having put it on speaker so you could hear.
"Why of course, Atsushi! The Grand Lotus!"
"Don't you know how much just one night in this hotel costs?!" you shouted, earning a laugh from the suicidal man.
"No worries! Kunikida can easily afford it!"
"Oh my God," you grumbled in disbelief, Atsushi still having a bit of a freakout.
"Dazai, we can't stay here!"
"Sure you can! You kids have fun!"
The call ended and you two were left just staring up at the fancy hotel, eyes twitching and feeling extremely out of place. You looked at Atsushi, forcing a bit of a smile as you nudged him softly.
"Uh, shall we go?"
Atsushi laughed a bit sheepishly and nodded. "Y-Yeah."
Grabbing your bags, you walked inside the hotel with Atsushi in tow, immediately garnering looks from the folks in the lobby. Swallowing down your nerves, you walked over to the reception desk, smiling at the receptionist as she welcomed you to the hotel.
Checking in was surprisingly easy, and you weren't surprised to find that the reservation was booked under Kunikida's name. You can only shake your head, smiling thankfully at the woman as she handed you two room keys.
"Please, enjoy your stay."
"I feel... so weird," Atsushi mumbled, some of the hotel workers taking yours and his bags and gesturing for them to follow them. "Are they gonna take the bags for us?!"
"That's what they do," you answered, laughing awkwardly as you made it inside the fancy elevator. The workers said nothing as you and Atsushi whispered amongst yourselves.
"Here you are, sir, madam," the worker said politely after escorting you to the room. He opened the door for you guys, allowing you to walk in and take in the site of the large, luxurious suite. It was absolutely breathtaking, with large windows, a large TV and the bed was huge.
"No way," you muttered in horror, staring down the large, king size bed in the middle of the room. Atsushi was in a similar state, stunned beyond belief. His cheeks already began to turn red, you quickly turned to the man who escorted you both to the room. "Is this the right room?"
"Yes, ma'am. Your reservation clearly noted a couple's suite-"
"What?!" Atsushi exclaimed, face now crimson. "Seriously!?"
"Yes, sir. Enjoy your stay." And he was gone, leaving you and Atsushi in a very awkward position.
"Um..." you coughed, your own face feeling hot as you stared at the bed. "Maybe we can change it?" you suggested and Atsushi nodded almost robotically.
"Yeah!" he choked. "Maybe they could change it!"
They could not. The hotel was completely booked, so now you and your coworker, and longtime crush, were sharing a hotel room... with only one bed. And you knew, you knew, that this was Dazai's doing.
"Uh... I can just sleep on the couch?" Atsushi suggested, gesturing towards the small lounge area of the suite. "It's no big deal."
Your mouth fell open. "Atsushi... you're not sleeping on the couch," you responded, shaking your head. "I won't allow it."
"But-" Atsushi stammered. "Where would I sleep then?"
You felt your face heat up. Of course, Atsushi would let you sleep on the bed, forgoing his own comfort for someone else is part of his forte. But you couldn't just let that happen! You both deserved to sleep in a comfortable bed, and that was final.
"We will share the bed," you said, trying not to stutter a bit. "It's big enough for the two of us, so... it shouldn't be a problem. Atsushi?"
Atsushi was basically in flames, his face horribly red as he stuttered in response to your suggestion. "I- I couldn't possibly-"
"Atsushi, c'mon! I won't feel comfortable with you sleeping on the couch or the floor, and I know you wouldn't let me do the same," you put your hands on your plush hips, making a face at your coworker. "We're adults. We can share a bed."
The finality of your voice made Atsushi slump his shoulders, giving up since he knew he wouldn't win this. You smiled triumphantly, ignoring the way your heart pounded at the thought of you sharing a bed with the guy you had a crush on for a while. Besides, you were here to help with a case, so you couldn't possibly worry about the crush.
"Okay, now that that is settled, we have about an hour before we have to meet the investigators," you said, digging in your messenger bag to pull out the manila folder which held all the paperwork you were given for the case. "They will really run us down about what's been happening here."
"The reports said there's been some kidnappings, right?" Atsushi asked, getting himself settled just a bit, sitting on his side of the bed and turning to look at you. You nodded your head, flipping through the papers with a small frown on your face.
"Yeah, four so far," you answered, closing the folder and crossing your arms over your chest. "They've been having such a hard time with this case. There is apparently no trace of the victims anywhere, like they vanished into thin air..."
"This honestly seems like the perfect case for Ranpo," Atsushi commented and you nodded in agreement.
"Yeah, but he's been called on another big case. But don't worry, Atsushi, we'll crack this! We may not be the world's best detective, but if we put our heads together, we'll be... not even a fraction of being close to his level!" All Atsushi could do was laugh loudly, especially at the goofy grin on your face.
You were just so dang cute, and Atsushi tried to ignore the way his heart pounded in his chest as he gazed at you, fondness in his eyes. You were getting your own things ready for your trip to meet the investigators. Snapping out of his daze, he blushed a bit, coughing into his hands before turning away.
"It's nice to meet you, detective," you said politely with a bow, the older man standing before you laughing a bit sheepishly as you and Atsushi greeted him.
"Please, no need for such formalities!" he said, with a friendly smile on his face. "Honestly wish we could have met under better circumstances, but it is still a pleasure to meet you two!"
You and Atsushi made it on time to the station and were immediately whisked away to meet the three other investigators assigned to the kidnapping case. The man you were meeting now was Sergeant Sakamoto, and he was the lead detective on the case. Besides him, there was Detective Yamamoto, a pretty woman with dark hair and kind eyes, despite her more rugged look.
"Don't hold us back," she warned, a bit of a playful smile on her face. Atsushi laughed nervously while you shook her hand. She was cool.
Then last was Detective Ito, a fresh, young man with a scowl on his face, which only deepened as you and Atsushi greeted him.
"I still don't understand why we had to recruit these nobodies for help. They aren't even police," he sneered, clearly looking down on you.
"Ito! You're being incredibly rude!" Yamamoto exclaimed, glare on her face. "The Armed Detective Agency was kind enough to lend us some of their bests, so you better behave."
"What the hell are you, my mother?"
"No, but I am your senior! Only been on the job for three years and you already think you're hot shit!"
The two continued to argue back and forth while you stood, stunned into silence. "Um... what the hell?"
"What is that guy's problem?" Atsushi asked with a frown.
"He's new and he has a lot on his shoulders," Sakamoto answered with an amused smile. "Don't mind him too much. He is still a good detective."
"Uh huh." You obviously didn't believe it, crossing your arms over your chest, glancing over at Atsushi. "This is going to be very interesting... or a pain in the ass."
Atsushi watched as Sakamoto finally went to break up the argument, the two obviously very hot headed detectives going silent but still casting glares at each other as they moved to sit at the table in the middle of the conference room. Atsushi sighed, shaking his head.
"Probably a bit of both."
After gathering at the conference table, Sakamoto stood at the head of it, rolling over a whiteboard that had pictures of four different people of various ages on it.
"These are the four that have been recently reported missing," Sakamoto started, pointing at the young woman to the far left. "This is Haru Sato, twenty-two years old. She was reported missing by her roommate after she didn't return home for two days." Sakamoto went down the line, introduced a young man named Yamato, an older man named Ichiro and another young woman named Hikari. You couldn't help but notice something about the pictures, your eyes narrowing as you looked at each one.
"These are their mugshots," you spoke up, the others now looking at you. "They've all had run-ins with the police."
"You're right," Yamamoto declared, nodding her head. "I personally arrested both Haru and Yamato for prostitution."
"And Ichiro was arrested for robbing a store. He's homeless with a history of shoplifting," Sakamoto continued, Ito rolling his eyes as he scoffed. Sakamoto just smiled a bit and went on. "Lastly, Hikari is seventeen and she lives in a group home. The home reported her missing, but she has a history of running away, as well as pick pocketing."
"Will we get a copy of all this?" you asked, troubled by all that you've just heard. You glanced at Atsushi, seeing that he looked just as troubled, his eyebrows furrowed
"Are these the only ones who've gone missing?" he asked and Yamamoto sighed.
"Well, the one's thats been reported," she answered. "Do you see the pattern here? All these victims have a record, no real family. They-"
"Are the dregs of society," Ito interrupted with a distasteful sneer. "Fucking hookers, drug addicts, and the lowest of the lows. They are obviously people no one will miss if they disappear."
There was a beat of silence, the two other officers already used to these kind of words from him, while your jaw was on the ground, your mind just running at the audacity of this man. You could feel your blood starting to boil, your fists clenching tightly.
"Clearly, people miss them if they have been reported missing," Atsushi was the one to speak out and you looked at him in a bit of shock. His voice was even, his lips pulled in a fine line. His usually kind eyes were full of anger and it honestly took your breath away. You swallowed thickly.
"Tch, whatever," Ito dismissed Atsushi with a wave of his hand and it took all your strength for you not to leap over the table and beat the shit out of him.
"I do wonder how the hell you became a cop," Yamamoto sneered, rolling her eyes. "Anyways... let's continue on."
"What a fucking dick." You stormed into the hotel room with a fury, kicking off your shoes before throwing your bag on the bed. You've spent a few hours with the detectives in the station, going over the case with Atsushi and getting caught up to speed. The next day would be your official start to the investigation, and you planned on looking over each and every point and detail in the paperwork to find those missing people.
"Can you believe that fucking guy? How did he get assigned?!" you continued to vent, Atsushi kicking off his own shoes.
"I looked up his profile," he started, stretching a bit before lounging on the small couch, his file in hand. "Apparently, he's really good at what he does. And that does include being a dick." Atsushi grinned when you snorted and laughed, watching you fall back on the bed, sighing heavily.
"And we have to work with him... ugh, this is gonna suck!" you whined and Atsushi couldn't help but agree with you.
"Maybe so, but we'll have to be civil. Those people's lives are more important than some beef with another detective."
You wrinkled your nose at him. "Fine, whatever. Anyway, let's order dinner then we can look over this case some more."
Dinner was soon ordered and you spent a lot of time well into the evening going over the files of the case, highlighting and jotting down notes wherever you see fit. Atsushi helped, of course, even as you two feasted on the room service dinner.
"I want to talk to the people who reported these two missing tomorrow," you said, meaning Haru and Yamato. "I'm sure someone who works along with them could give us some info... I don't trust that Ito man to have really looked into this."
"I agree with you," Atsushi started and you looked at him in surprise when he took the folder and paperwork from your hands. He smelled like soap, his hair was damp and he wore a pair of soft shorts and a shirt.
"Did you take a shower?"
"Yeah, you were too focused to even notice," Atsushi said with a laugh, shaking his head. "It's eleven-thirty already. You should go shower and we should go to bed. We need to rest if you wanna go asking questions tomorrow."
You grunted, sending Atsushi a mock dirty look. You wanted to keep going, but you knew he was right anyway. You couldn't work efficiently without a good night's sleep. "Fine, fine."
Atsushi waited on his side of the bed as you showered, making sure his phone was charging before making himself comfortable under the comforter. You walked out of the bathroom and he felt his cheeks warm up as he looked at you.
You were comfortable in a pair of loose, short pajama shorts that showcased your thick thighs. Atsushi couldn't keep his eyes off of you as you finished your nightly routine, hanging up your damp towel. Your top didn't help, it also loose and Atsushi turned red at the accidental glance he had under your shirt when you bent over to organize around the side of your bed.
"I am tired," you said as you finally climbed under the sheets after turning out the lights. You got comfortable, but that went away as you glanced over at Atsushi, your partner staring up at the ceiling.
Oh right. You were sharing a bed with him.
Your face went hot and you couldn't help but stiffen up, thinking that maybe sleeping right on your back and not moving an inch would be best. But that wasn't going to be comfortable at all and you knew that wouldn't get you the best sleep you needed. So you took a deep breath to relax, smiling softly as you looked at Atsushi again.
"Let's get some sleep, okay?" you said softly and Atsushi replied with a small squeak.
"Y-yeah!" he answered, voice cracking a bit, his face red. He heard you laugh and he glared at you. "What's so funny?!"
"Nothing," you answered, stifling your laughter. "It's just... we're making ourselves uncomfortable. So let's just try to relax, okay? We're just sleeping."
Atsushi relaxed a bit, not even realizing he had gone rigid. "Yeah... you're right. We're adults."
You nodded. "Exactly."
You two were on your backs, side to side with your eyes on the ceiling. You took a deep breath and closed your eyes, waiting to finally fall asleep. When you woke up again, you were on your side, and Atsushi wasn't beside you. Looking around blearily, you noticed the bathroom door was shut and could see the light from under the door. Ah, okay. You could calm down now. Atsushi was just using the bathroom. You turned back onto your side again, finding it much easier to fall back to sleep.
Though unfortunately for Atsushi, it didn't come that easily. He had managed to fall into a light sleep himself, until he woke up when he felt something press against him. In your sleep, you had rolled over to your side, pressing yourself right against him. You even clung to him, arm across his chest, humming softly as you snuggled him.
Atsushi's heart was pounding, your soft body pressing against him making chills go down his spine. You breathed against his neck, he could feel your full breasts on his side, and did you just hook your leg over his?!
His blood rushed right down to his cock and that was how he now found himself in the bathroom, sitting on the toilet with his bottom lip caught between his teeth as he fisted his hard cock.
Atsushi always had a crush on you. You were so beautiful, smart, and kind with a tough streak, your willingness to always help out and kick ass so admirable for him. He liked being with you, at work and outside of work, and he could never keep his eyes off you. You were bigger than most women, but that was more than okay. He loved how you looked, he loved how cute you were, with your chubby cheeks... plush hips and amazing thighs...
Atsushi screwed his eyes shut, just imagining your thighs and how they jiggled when you walked. He wanted to squeeze them tightly, kiss them softly, bite them hard as he spreads them open and-
"Fuck," Atsushi cursed, quickly covering his mouth with his free had as he squeezed his other around his cock. He pulled his shirt up, biting on the hem of it. He broke out in a sweat, trying so hard to suppress his moans as he continued to fuck his fist, imaging that it was you he was fucking. God, he liked you so much, wanted you so bad in every way possible. Next to him, on him, under him. Kissing him sweetly, playfully fighting him, riding him, moaning his name, saying you loved him-
His orgasm hit him hard and his body shook as he shot his cum all over his hand and stomach, making a bit of a mess as he soon slumped back, breathing heavily. With shaking legs and hands, he manages to get to the sink and clean himself up, splashing water on his face as guilt starts to eat at him.
You would be so disgusted if you saw him like this, a sweaty mess who jerked off to the thought of you. You were his friend, coworker and partner and not only did he like you, he just made himself cum with you in the other room?! What kind of freak does that? He groans, running his hand over his face. You didn't even like him back... he was such a fucking joke.
"Atsushi?" your voice sounded through the door and he nearly jumped out of his skin. "Are you okay? You've been in there a while."
"Yeah, I'm fine!" he squeaked, his heart going wild in his chest. "J-just, dinner didn't agree with me!"
"Ew, gross. I'm going back to bed."
Atsushi sighed deeply as you walked away, waiting a moment before flushing the toilet. He wasn't going to survive a week of this, he was sure of it.

You know i really hate you. But we are married and no one can tell me otherwise Happy Birthday!
My submission for the thousands of other Birthday Dazai fics out there~ Happy Birthday, you suicidal manic 💕
Osamu Dazai x GN!Reader
To you, a million minutes away into the future.
The hours can't count the number of times Dazai thought about you. It honestly wasn't just about you physically anymore. There was a magic about you that made the world turn the right way. The time and space meshing and intertwining perfectly to give way for your presence.
The seconds couldn't explain the times Dazai thought about saying the words "I love you." From the lazy afternoons chattering aimlessly into the evening, which lead to electric and sparkling midnight caresses. The mornings where he knew he would end up awakening from his light slumber; for everyone knew that his dreams held more nightmares than anything else.
Thoughts would drone through his head about your presence and the visions of the future you had.
Was luck part of this?
How many years would you stay around?
Could he have won something in the universe to achieve you?
But Dazai had never been one to think about his own future. He stayed in the center of the buzzing world, stuck in a mindless incantation of the past. In the very center, where the light and dark met and the past grabbed onto the present. That's where Dazai was.
The one day he thought about his own future was this birthday.
Though there was nothing grand or entirely significant to the outsider's point of view, that peaceful, unordinary day held so many more precious memories than his entire lifetime could have given him.
The title of birthday was irrelevant entirely. In all honesty, to Dazai, it just happened to be another day, another minute, another second. Gifts were unimportant. The world could have given him mountains of gold and showers of whiskey and he would have found little pleasure in it. But he silently accepted each of the little, delicately wrapped presents on his doorstep.
Scribbles of Agency members' names were meticulously written on the paper and a card from a certain Port Mafia member had miraculously found itself stuck in Dazai's windowsill.
And then there was you. And perhaps you were the greatest present of them all. For Dazai looked at you as if all the stars in the sky and all the beauty of the world had formed to create a singular being.
He honestly didn't remember what you got him. Perhaps your time, perhaps your energy, perhaps a new pendant. But there was never going to be a time where he forgot the feeling of freedom you gave him.
As if suddenly the world had suddenly seemed just a little bit brighter the second you said:
"Happy Birthday, Osamu."
A sharp, slow intake of breath.
A pair of unsteady hands reaching out to cup your face.
A singular second in which the man before you looked mendable. Like he was beginning to join the rest of the buzzing world in the flow of the universe.
That was the one day he thought about his future. A future where you were always with him. A place where you wished him those beautiful words every year. Where time was infinite and his thoughts could melt into the delicate intricacy of his love for you.
So, to you, a million minutes away into the future.
Take care of him; Love him so he can love himself; And wish him a Happy Birthday every year.

Series: Bungo Stray Dogs Ship: Kijo x Chuuya Plot: A rainy night in leads to an intimate conversation over some wine. Kijo realizes her position in Chuuya’s life was more than she had originally thought. Word count: 1,221 Warnings: Alcohol
“I can never read all the books I want; I can never be all the people I want and live all the lives I want. I can never train myself in all the skills I want. And why do I want? I want to live and feel all the shades, tones and variations of mental and physical experience possible in my life.” - The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath
“ Sometimes, I feel like I’m about to burst. ”
Silence. And then, choked back laughter. Chuuya pilled the wine glass from his lips and grinned at Kijo,
“ Sounds pretty messy. Who do you think is gonna clean all of that up?”
“ What, you wont?”
“ Why me?!”
Kijo giggled but her laugh didn’t reach her eyes. Her gaze returned to the rain that was beating on the windowpane of her shop, making memories of the way the water chased itself down the glass. Chuuya was silent with observation before he lifted his eyebrows and took another sip of his Syrah, closing his eyes.
“ What do you have on your mind?”
“ That’s a pretty loaded question, y’know.”
“ Then pull the trigger. Answer me.”
Kijo swirled the wine in her glass, giving a tentative hum. “ You know how coming here was out of necessity for myself, and not a choice? “
“ Well,” she pulled her legs up onto the couch, hugging her knees to her chest with her free arm. “ Sometimes I feel like I made a mistake. ”
Chuuya remained silent, his eyes on her. She couldn’t bring herself to meet his gaze so instead, she busied her stare with the decorations on the walls. She eyed a painting she was particularly fond of; Gustav Klimt’s “The Kiss”. She longingly stared at the different shades of yellow, the tender and affectionate way the man held the woman. She couldn’t recall the amount of times she’d spent admiring every detail in it; brushstrokes memorized down to the tiny hitches of fibers in the bottom right corner, the curve of the artists name etched into the canvas. She nodded to it,
“ Gustav Klimt was one of the most prominent members in the Art Nouveau movement. Do you know what that translates to?”
“ I’m not familiar.”
“ ‘New Art’,” Kijo laughed. “ It marked the beginning of an entirely new era. It ended up modernizing art and separating it from eclectic, historical styles that had been popular predating the 1800’s. Gustav Klimt was, in himself, a pioneer. He operated in a successful movement called the Vienna Succession, which united artists of all different styles and created a common ground for them to come together.”
“ Huh. I didn’t know that.”
“ I always stop and stare at this painting and think to myself, “ what grand thing have I accomplished, since coming here?”” Ah, there it was. Chuuya’s head snapped back in her direction, his eyebrows furrowed, but anything he had to say died in his throat when he saw her crest fallen expression.
“ I came here because I felt it was the only choice I had. I suppose I could have chosen Italy, or France, or something more fantastical and elegant, but I didn’t want to feel like I was recreating some sort of romance novel,” she paused to sip at her Syrah. “ I guess I’m sort of regretting that decision. Like, can you imagine if I had gone through with it, and ran to the vineyards of Italy to paint and stare hopelessly at rolling hills of grapes? Do you think I would’ve fallen in love with some man who insisted on chasing me around, one who reeked of overpriced cologne and desperation?” “ No, because you hate people.”
Kijo cracked a weak smile. Chuuya had long since finished his wine and was setting the glass down.
“ At this point in my life, I very well thought I’d have my own art gallery. Or, at least, successfully published a poetry book. I have so many insane thoughts in my head that I know people would pay good money for. Like, “ Hah! Look at this psychopath! Glad thats not me! I’m gonna pay money to witness her mental decline because it makes myself feel better about my position in life. God forbid I ever deal with whatever she’s got going on.””
Kijo didn’t notice Chuuya’s clenched jaw. Nor did she notice his narrowed stare. She continued,
“ It’s something that haunts me, though, and every day is getting harder. I’ve made so many stupid mistakes in my life – so many that hurt the people I loved, that ruined their own lives, yet yearning for some exciting escape to a European country is what keeps me up at night? I have the gall to feel sorry for myself when I put myself in this position? It’s so fucking selfish.”
Perhaps it was the liquid courage talking, or maybe he was speaking genuinely, Kijo wasn’t sure, but he caught her off guard when he suddenly snatched her hand up and pulled her to look at him, his voice raised,
“ Would you shut up already?”
Kijo’s mouth was in the shape of an ‘O’ as she stared at him and Chuuya took a deep breath,
“ You’re not selfish for wanting more from your life, get that through your thick head. You made some mistakes, so what? Fucking let it go, move on, let yourself be happy. For fucks sake.”
Kijo shook her head, turning to set her own glass down,
“ It’s more than that--”
“ No, its not!” His voice was suddenly sharp and Kijo flinched, leaning away from him. But her face wasn’t one of fear – no, she looked genuinely confused. She couldn’t understand why Chuuya was as upset as he was. Did she strike a nerve? “ You’re way over complicating this! Look, if you’re miserable, you should do something about it! Sell your shop, pack your things up, move to Italy or France or Norway--”
“-- I never said Norway – “
“ Whatever-- listen to that thing in your chest. Go where you want. No one is stopping you.”
Kijo’s face softened and her eyes fell. He was still holding her hand, and his grip was so tight, she felt it might break her wrist if he held it any tighter.
“ No one is stopping me? “
“ Yeah!” “ Are you sure?”
“ Of course I am! “ She didn’t believe that to be true. Despite Chuuya’s encouraging words, she could see a sadness in his eyes – he tried to cover it up with frustration, but she knew him well enough to see through that. That’s when it finally hit her. I’m more important to you than I thought, aren’t I?
Kijo moved herself closer, pulling his arm around her waist. Chuuya’s expression changed to one of surprise as she burrowed her face into the curve of his neck. Her arms snaked up his back and she breathed in deeply, smiling gently when he followed suit.
“ Who will fill the empty space if I leave? ”
Her voice was soft, a gentle whisper. Afraid that if she spoke any louder, she may end up breaking him. He’d tensed up at her question,
“… I …”
“ You’ve had enough to drink. Let’s get you home.” Kijo began pulling away from him but gasped when she was pulled back against his chest, her face buried in his shirt. When she tried to crane her neck to look up, Chuuya held tighter, refusing to let her move.
“ Just… Sit with me, like this. Just for a minute.”
She hesitated before she relaxed against him, turning to press her ear to his chest. His heart beat was quick, pounding against his ribcage; a melody only she recognized.
The rain outside had finally stopped.
