chani has two notable weapons on her person nearly at all times, especially if she’s out in the desert.   the crysknife, the one her great aunt gave her && the same one paul uses to fight jamis,  that’s sheathed in a thigh harness on the outside of her stillsuit.   the second one is one she specifically asked to be made for her that’s a blade concealed under the right arm of her stillsuit that doesn’t disrupt the stillsuit from doing its job.  it’s a mechanism’s that clasps to her wrist that holds a blade on the underside of it clearest to her skin---when she flexes her wrist in a specific way the blade, which is long enough to penetrate someone through the flesh deep enough to cause damage if the right organs or blood vessels are punctured,  shoots out into the person she’s fighting. when she relaxes her wrist the blade retracts.  it’s a hidden weapon, one she’s used multiple times when cryskinfe can’t be reached in time or gets knocked out of her hand.   it’s saved her life several times as well as allowed her to save others.

#headcanon: chani kynes #me writing abt chani's weapons : uwu i love you #its basically like those assassins creed wrist blades #i've had this on my brain #chani is most skilled in close quarters / close combat fighting with her hands or knives #so she mostly goes for the jugular or their throat in general when using the concealed blade #though she has and will try and puncture organs etc if she can't get to their throat #or under the jaw #she uses to her advantage that idiots might underestimate her #bc she's small and a girl and is cute --- she gets close and SLICE #you fool you've been bested

Chani’s introduction in Dune 2021 was kind of disappointing to me. Sure, she calls the occupying force ‘oppressors’, which is good, but they definitely sacrificed some nuance. Namely:

The Fremen do not call the planet Arrakis. They call it Dune. Y’know, the name of the actual movie? The word that’s in every title of the book series?

Chani is Fremen. She should call it Dune.

Dune versus Arrakis is the name of the native people for their land, versus the name the invading oppressors give the planet.

Chani should have called it Dune.

once paul becomes emperor && chani is granted access to objectively “finer things” that she never saw on arrakis, though what she had on arrakis had always been more than adequate for her!   she never wanted anything nicer or “better” because arrakis is her home && she loves it,  she kinda doesn’t know how to react.   it’s a major step up in comparison to arrakis && somewhat of a major culture shock.  when she first starts picking out cloths to wear, after spending more time of her life in a stillsuit, she doesn’t know what to choose because there are so many options that it’s overwhelming. . . she also worries not to pick too many because she’s imagining the like highest possible expense for them && she doesn’t want to be wasteful or overindulge even if paul is like “pick whatever you want” && she’ll pick like three && even that feels too much.    when trying them on to choose as well,  she’d say something like “while this dress is very pretty, it’s not very practical is it?  how do you fight in it?” as a genuine, serious question.

#headcanon: chani kynes #& she isn't very comfortable in dresses at first #she has to warm up to wearing them & doesn't strictly limit herself to dresses !  she doesn't want to wear them all the time #because she sees them as somewhat impractical but also bc she isn't entirely comfortable in them

Lovelies who are well versed in the Dune novels, can you please tell me the ages of the following characters (at the beginning of the story that is, I just need a starting point for reference). I have been trying to chart things out for some character interactions but I'm either blind or the ages are just mentioned randomly all over the place and I just can't seem to find them.

    Duncan Idaho

    Gurney Halleck

    Leto Atreides

    Lady Jessica

Thank you very much in advance!

    Dune by Frank Herbert

I really liked reading Dune. There was not one instant where I was bored, and something always kept pulling me back to pick up the book again. Frank Herbert dedicated the book to ecologists by saying-

"To the people whose labours go beyond ideas into the realm of 'real materials'- to the dry-land ecologists, wherever they may be, in whatever time they work, this effort at prediction is dedicated in humility and admiration."

This dedication itself says a lot about Dune, and of the essence of the book. We follow Paul of House Atreides, the protagonist of Dune, who is thrust into a great destiny beyond his understanding. We see him grow in a lot of aspects in the book, which shows powerful character transformation. I enjoyed going on this journey with Paul Atreides, and reading the book was a great joy. The science-fiction novel was a bit difficult to understand at first, and I have also seen a lot of poeple saying that they stopped reading the book mid-way.

My review is contrasting those sayings, for I stayed deeply attached to the story till the end. It is a well-written novel with nicely built charaters which have you rooting for them always. The story is also well-crafted, portraying the Atreides-against-Harkonnen dynamic very smoothly.

I learnt a lot from this book. The lesson of humility which the desert teaches us, that you have to stand up for your people and fight for them, the teaching of recourefulness and water-conservation has also struck me. Herbert delivers a powerful message through the book.

In my opinion, it was a great read, definitely worth it. I wouldn't reccomend this to everybody, but if you like sci-fi, Game of Thrones, space novels and such like, you can certainly try out Dune.

    Rating : ★★★★ (4/5)

he can’t begin to count how many times he’s been here — the number would likely be two digits by now, maybe he should have counted it just to really know how much time he really spends here. what makes it easier is the fact that it’s within walking distance from his current home, too, leaving very little space for excuses. another fact is that he enjoyes spending time at the museum, no matter how far that is from what usually interests most people his age. the atmosphere is like no other, offering enough for one to hear their own thoughts whilst looking over displays that are hundreds of years older than them; a great opportunity to get lost in secrets that are perserved here if necessary. and really, it’s his own fault for not paying enough attention to his surroundings, a rare occurrence for someone that’s usually so hyper-aware of everything that takes place aorund him. therefore when it happens, it messes up with paul’s whole sense of balance, leaving him surprised that even it happened in first place. “ i apologize, ” it’s the immediate reaction to the realization that the step back he took wasn’t into an open space, but there was, in fact, someone else that he nearly knocked into. paul turns to take a look at the person, prepared to say his sorry one more time because he knows he is at fault here, only the words do not come out once his eyes fall onto the other person’s features. the realization is sudden, heavy, hitting him with an exact aim — he is certain he’s seen this face before. the silence stretches on for too long, and when he breaks it, it’s nowhere near as he’s imagined this would ever go, embarrassingly stumbling over his own words. “ i didn’t  — uh, i mean, i wasn’t looking. are you okay? ”

Beyond Prophecy: The Tudor Dragon & the Atreides Hawk

Denis Villeneuve's Dune Movie delivered. It was glorious, a momentous epic! Already, part 1 gave us a glimpse of this brutal, wondrous and mysterious universe. For one, there is an emphasis on the Atreides flag. Although the background in which is shown is dark, we can clearly make out a hawk on a green and black bacground. This closely resembles the Cadwalldr banner Henry Tudor (Henry VII) that he used when he landed on Milford Haven on August 1485, with the intention to challenge Richard for his crown.

The first part of #Dune, deals with the decline of House Atreides. Much like House Lancaster in the wars of the roses, it is game over. Paul is considered the last scion and as a result, the Harkonnens, the Imperial House of Corrino and the Bene Gesserit themselves, are in a race against time to finish him off. It is his mother with all her Bene Gesserit training (played in the Villleneuve's film by Rebecca Ferguson who played Elizabeth Woodville in "The White Queen", a historical fantasy set during the wars of the roses) and her undying devotion for this perfect being she created, that saves him. Without the tenets of her faith, and everything else she taught him, Paul would not have made it that far into the desert nor convinced the Fremen to take (both) him and his mother.

Historical buffs can see the similarities between this story and that of Margaret Beaufort and her only child, Henry Tudor.

Unlike Paul though, Henry Tudor was not considered the last scion of Lancaster until all of the members from its royal branch had been wiped out. Henry inherited his right to the throne though his mother who happened to descend from the eldest son of John of Gaunt's third marriage to Kathryn Swynford. Due to his Beaufort offspring born BEFORE his marriage to their mother, they were excluded by their half-brother, the first Lancastrian King, Henry IV (even though they had previously been legitimized by his predecessor, Richard II in 1399). Nevertheless, they remained a menace to the two royal branches of the Plantagenet Dynasty, especially the House of York. It should come to no surprise then, why, after the obliteration of Henry VI and his line, an effort was made to lure the teenager back into England.

In several interviews, Frank Herbert made a point of how fascinated he was with history and the endless cycle in which it repeats itself. The similar motiffs, and devices that many prophetic leaders and rulers used to climb up the royal ladder. Henry wasn't the first -nor he'd be the last English King- to use the element of prophecy and divine ancestry to gain unlikely allies. The first King from the House of York, Edward IV, also used the element of prophecy and divine providence early on. He used Welsh motiffs, claiming that his Welsh ancestry can be traced back all the way to King Arthur Pendragon himself! Then, at the battle of Mortimer Cross, with the illusion of three sons shown in the sky, his armies were reinvigorated against the enemy, believing that this was God's way of telling them that the Father, Son and Holy Ghost was with them, and that they also represented the three remaining sons of the slain Duke of York.

Henry did not need any image in the sky to get people to come over to his side. The resentment against Richard III was enough to convince his English allies that he would bring about everything they hoped for. When it came to his Welsh allies, his half Welsh background through his father (Edmund Tudor, Earl of Richmond) and his uncle, Jasper Tudor, Earl of Pembroke, helped. Before Henry was born, his grandfather, father and uncle had gained significant allies in Wales. Edmund and Jasper's titles added more to that. When thirteen-year old Margaret Beaufort was pregnant with Henry, songs were sung about an ancient prophecy that from an ancient Welsh line a royal savior would come who'd rule all the Isles. Despite the English having appropriated the Arthurian myth centuries before, he was still a revered figure there. Unsurprisingly, many English Kings, claimed to be his descendants or their spiritual successors.

When Henry did the same thing, it was nothing out of the ordinary. But due to his half-Welsh ancestry, more people there believed it. And he also went a step further, using old prophecies associated with him and his family, to claim that he was the savior and king of legend who would bring about a golden age. Henry's chosen banner is today the Welsh flag: the red dragon of Cadwalldr on a field of black and green.

Atreides and Tudor's use of winged animals can also be seen as a reflection of their respective Houses. While the Atreides flag is a earl animal and the Tudor flag is a fantastical beast, both symbolize how these two houses will take the world (or in the case of Dune, the known universe) by storm.
