I am not sure how we are almost halfway through June, it feels like Christmas was last week, but the heat of summer has inspired me to put together a playlist with some of my favourite 'summer' songs. Now, 'summer' is not really a genre and I struggled to define it even for myself so I am sure this will look different to most 'summer' playlist. There are songs that I connect to summer for nostalgic reasons, road trip songs, songs that make me think about summer, songs to dance and sing to... There's 30 songs on the playlist, 2 hours of music. It's a strange bunch, but I hope you enjoy it!
I'll not go through each song because we'd be here for a long while if I did that, but I thought I'd give you some of my highlights:
Hey Gringo by KALEO inspired this playlist and will be my song of summer 2021, no doubt about it. It's atmospheric, fun and bound to make you dance. Also, it was definitely inspired by Santana and the Latin rock band provide the next song on the playlist. Now, I wanted to play it cool and dig out some deep track from their rich discography, but I had to go with Smooth - every drive to the sea I remember as a child, this would come up on the radio and it's such a mood booster.
Speaking of drives, there's a lot of 'road trip' songs on this playlist. I was tempted to put Big Log or 29 Palms on here, but eventually decided on a newer Robert Plant track - Turn It Up. There's nothing particularly summer-y about this one (as a lot of the tracks on here) but I like the idea of being lost and found on a road trip, the radio leading your way... The production is amazing and really makes this track stand out. Also included are Going Down South off of The Black Keys' new album, which came out recently, as well as Encore by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, which is one of my favourites from their 2016 album The Getaway.
Remember by Free and Amoreena by Elton John (here as on the movie Rocketman, sang by Taron Egerton) always transport me to summer, even on the coldest winter days. There is simplicity and innocence to them that captures the spirit of summer marvelously.
Deep Purple's All of the Time in the World has become one of my favourite songs in the last few years. In a world where non-stop hustle and quick success are so recklessly glorified, this song can be a nice, refreshing reminder that life is not a race and it's OK to just... sit sometimes.
Next up is a cover I've read a lot of mixed reviews about - Jive Talkin' take from Barry Gibb's Greenfields album, which came out earlier this year. This slowed-down version of the Bee Gees classic features Miranda Lambert and Rival Sons' Jay Buchanan on vocals as well as of course, Barry Gibb. I love how soulful this cover is and the vocals are amazing.
The Sheepdogs kick off the last 'section' of the playlist with I've Got a Hole Where My Heart Should Be. This is just a fun track that I listened to a lot in summer 2019 after seeing The Sheepdogs open for Rival Sons in February of the same year. It has a memorable riff and chorus as well as great energy from the band. Another fun track, that could also have been in the road trip 'section', is Mr. Big's Alive and Kickin'. Again I love the band's energy and how bluesy this track is.
When Love Comes to Town by U2 and B.B. King is one of my go-to songs when I need a mood boost and you can't go wrong with the King, so I couldn't not include it. Finally, closing this collection of songs is The Taste of Honey's Boogie Oogie Oogie, which I discovered through this scene. The title says it all and it always makes me want to dance, preferably in the heat.
Besides those, there's some Sam Cooke and Otis Redding because soul works for every season, Bad Company and David Gilmour and what not really! Please give it a listen and I hope you find a new favourite or maybe rediscover an old one!
And have a lovely summer everyone, but don't take it too seriously - it's just another season so as long as you're doing your thing, you're doing it right!
Copa America | Chile’s Sanchez out of group stage
Chile forward Alexis Sanchez will miss the group stage of the Copa America due to a leg injury, the national team said in a statement late on Saturday.
