After finishing the last of his dinner, he set the container on the side table and settled further into the cushions of the couch. While he wasn't particularly interested in the movie he put on, it gave him some form of distraction. As soon as he got Chris's text, the rest of his day had consisted of struggling to stay focused instead of checking the door constantly. He might have felt ridiculous about it if they had seen each other at some point during the last four months, but they hadn’t.
Between the two of them, their work kept them separated to the point they hardly managed to even text each other. He only knew what Chris was up to during those months because of his conversation with Claire and dropped intel that Hunnigan managed to get her hands on. The last few days he had been sure the string of no contact would continue because he never went this long without a mission, and he heard nothing from Chris. Finally having contact almost made him feel like a child at Christmas, especially when Chris said he would be home that evening.
For the millionth time, his eyes flicked to the door like that would magically make Chris appear through it. When that didn't happen, he forced himself to look at the television again and tugged the blanket on his lap up to his chest. As if sensing his impatience, a ball of black fur suddenly leapt onto his legs to make herself right at home. The slide of his fingers through her fur gave him another distraction from the waiting on Chris to get home.
He was on the seventy-fifth pet when the click of the door unlocking reached both of their ears. Before she could leap down, Leon plucked her off his lap so he could safely swing his legs to the floor to meet Chris at the door. She gave an annoyed meow at being set on the couch instead of brought along, but he didn't pay that any mind. His entire focus was on getting to Chris as quickly as possible without bumping into anything in the process.
Strong arms pulled him in at the same time he locked his arms around Chris's neck to bring their bodies together. He was vaguely aware of a bag hitting the ground and the door shutting behind Chris, but most of the world narrowed down to the two of them. If there was one thing he learned during his time dating Chris, it was to bask in the moment when they got to be together. They were so few and far between that they couldn't afford not to make the most of it.
That didn't mean he expected Chris to suddenly tighten his hold to be nearly bruising and shove his face against the side of Leon's neck. He immediately brought a hand up to cradle the back of Chris's head, earning him a squeeze in response. All the questions on the tip of his tongue, he held to avoid bombarding Chris when he obviously wasn't up to talking. Even when his hold loosened and he lifted his head away from its hiding place, Leon held his tongue because of how tired he looked.
“Yeah.” He brushed a thumb across a heavy bag under Chris's eyes, then let his hand rest against his cheek. “I was starting to think you would forget what I look like.”
“That's never going to happen.”
“I can't help that I'm so memorable.”
“Are you hungry? I ordered your favorite from that Chinese place down the street. It'll just take me a few minutes to warm it up.”
“Can I ask you a question?”
For a moment, Chris considered his words with a frown on his face, then he released a sigh before speaking. “Are we cursed?”
“What do you mean?”
“It feels like we've been doing the same thing over and over again since all of this started, like a vicious cycle. Umbrella or someone that got information from them makes something horrible and we do our best to clean up the mess before too many people get hurt. There's no end in sight. It's just one mission after another.”
“Where is this coming from? Normally, you're the one talking about how important what we do is. Did something happen?”
“Same as always. New virus, lost people, stopped Umbrella. Same as always.”
“Chris,” Leon leaned in to rest his forehead against Chris's before continuing. “if you could do anything else, what would you do?”
“I don't know. There's not a lot I'm trained to do. This is what I've done my entire life. I know I'm good at it. I wouldn't be alive still if I wasn't, but...”
“I can think of one thing.”
Curiosity sparkled in Chris's eyes as he took a moment to think. “What would that be?”
“Teaching. You have a lot of experience that would be incredibly valuable for new recruits. I know you taught Claire self-defense. You've taught me. You're a good teacher. Why not train incoming recruits? You'd still be contributing like I know you want to, but you wouldn't be stuck in the loop anymore.”
“What about you?”
“I don't know what's in the cards for me. Our employment isn't the same. I'm sure the BSAA will try to push back because you're one of the best, but they'll let you do it. I'm not sure I'll ever have that option.”
“There has to be something we can do about that. There has to be. Haven't you done enough? Haven't we both done enough?”
“I like to think so.” After taking a deep breath to calm himself, Leon lightly knocked their foreheads together. “Maybe, we are cursed. Maybe, Umbrella dragged us down with them. We've dealt with a lot of shit, but there's been good. It can be hard to find. It is there. You're there. And Claire and Sherry and Piers and Jake and so many other people. You've all made it better. So, I might be cursed, but there's a lot of good.”
“Is that all you want? Go from one mission to the next and enjoy the good when you can?”
“No, there's a lot I want. I just... I can't do it, not right now.”
“When? When can we break this?”
“I don't know, but I'm sure we can figure it out together.”
Chris gave a small nod of his head, then straightened up to his full height. “Would you mind warming up that food for me? I want to put my stuff away.”
“Go. I'll bring it to you.”
“You're welcome.” Before Chris disappeared down the hall to their room, Leon called out to him to stop him in his tracks. “Hey, Chris. I love you.”
“I love you, too.”
“We'll figure this out. I promise.”
I want a fic where Chris was in Raccoon City and with Leon the whole time, things go as usual, obviously they woulda fallen in love that part’s obvious from the get go, but instead of Leon and Sherry getting picked up by the GOV afterwards, Leon made a beeline for his parents (as long as it’s an AU where he has a good relationship with them) and calls Chris to tell him the GOV WILL find them soon (maybe not a call-call cause… well the GOV is ALWAYS listening in…) and where he can find them and Chris hightails it over there while making arrangements to get them all out of the US, while Leon’s dad is confused about the sudden kid in their home and how the FUCK Leon survived a nuclear reactor meltdown but maybe that’s why the kid is with him cause she was all he was able to save, while his mom is just pretending none of this is happening and happily spoiling Sherry like she’s any neighborhood kid wandered into her kitchen and Leon basically decompresses by packing a bag of what little clothes and such he still had at his parents apartment, and he gave Sherry a stuffed bear he had in the closet from his childhood (🥺 she gets really attached to Sargent Fluffy) and finally Leon just sorta collapses on the couch a few hours after they get there and doesnt move for like three hours straight while his dad tries to figure out if he’s okay and Sherry is the only one who could get him out of it when she crawls onto the couch beside him and hugs him and asks him to come back cause she still needs him, and he snaps out of it and goes back into guard mode, following her around constantly and playing dutiful dad/big bro while she gets spoiled by her new grandma and cautiously accepts new grandpa’s attention, and I just need this.
When Chris and Jill (their ride out of the country) get there on day two, Leon cries when he has to tell his mom he’s probably not coming back to the US for a long time, but once he’s out he might be able to contact them more, and Sherry is sad to say bye, and Chris is like ‘lmao awkward’ and he feels bad about having to move them along but he needs to pick up his sister on some weird ass island she’s on now, and Leon is really arguing with his mom that he can’t tell her WHY he has to leave cause that’ll make shit hard for her too, and his dad has to convince her that’s really how Witness Protection works and doesn’t ask questions but they ask if Sherry is their grandbaby now and Sherry holds her breath while waiting for Leon to answer and Leon asks if she’d like that and she says yes so now she’s his baby and they get to leave the cpu try with Chris and Jill and not be recruited into some bullshit and Leon gets to sit at home learning to knit while watching his kiddo play in between missions with his new beau at BSAA and one day Claire comes home with Alice, another Umbrella project she found and some more kids, and they all live happily ever after.

Chris: I just found out from Rebecca today that when Wesker died and the service did the 21-gun salute at their funeral, Jill said, “They should aim at the coffin to be sure.”

Commission work ✨
At first, he thought the grogginess of waking came from a heavy sleep after a long day of work, but the pounding in his head and aching body didn't make any sense. Opening his eyes brought the world around him into blurry vision that slowly cleared with each blink. Horror filled him when things came in sharp enough focus to make out the blood splattered on the walls and the bodies around him. The body directly across from him stared blankly at him-dead eyes so familiar that the urge to vomit hit him strong.
Instead, he forced his mind to focus on struggling to his feet with the help of the wall to remain upright. His first few steps were shaky, and his body protested every move, but he kept moving until he heard the sound of a voice and heavy boots against the ground. Before he could hide in the nearest room, a person rounded the corner with a gun raised in preparation to shoot. He quickly lifted his hands up even though he fully expected to be filled with bullet holes all the same.
A tense moment passed before the gun lowered allowing him to take in the person holding it instead of the barrel. It was like the tenuous strings holding him up snapped when he took in none other than Piers Nivans. The impact of his knees hitting the ground caused his head to throb and his vision to go completely black. Before he could hit the ground, hands caught his shoulders in a firm grip.
“Leon, is there anyone else with you?”
“No, I-” The threat of bile rising in his throat struck once again at the thought of all those lifeless bodies-most of them people he knew. “I don't know. I didn't check. I should have checked. That's my job. What am I doing?”
When he tried to pull away, the hands tightened to an almost bruising grip that kept him locked in place. “Hey, I'm not letting you go back there.”
“It's my job!”
“You have a head injury. How are you going to help people when you can barely stand? We called in people to help. They'll help anyone that's still alive.”
“It might be too late.”
“And what about you? Someone needs to check you over for injuries in case they're worse than we realize. I can't let you go back there. I'll carry you out if I have to.”
“Thank you.” The hands released from his shoulders, but Piers didn't leave him to completely support himself. While one hand reached for the radio on Piers's shoulder, the other went to Leon's waist. “Found a survivor. East wing. Bringing him to central. Head injury. East wing is not clear. Send more to sweep.”
Whatever response Piers got came through his earpiece leaving Leon in the dark, but his satisfied nod gave some comfort. That comfort appeared to be well founded when a group rushed past them with some carrying medical bags. He leaned heavier against Piers on their way down the stairs and stayed that way as they exited the building. There was barely any time to take in all the vehicles and people surrounding the building before a couple doctor's rushed over to intercept.
Time fell into a haze as they hurried him over to a tent for an examination that ended with a few sets of stitches and a bandage wrapped around his head. Soft words tried to talk him through the check, but he was so out of it that none of it broke through the fog covering his mind. It took gentle hands nudging him back for him to lie down on the stiff mattress like they wanted him to. He might have fallen asleep immediately if the tent flap didn't part for the man that walked in.
Before the nurse could intercept him, the man took a few long strides to stand next to his bed with a deep frown on his face. The frown shifted to nothing short of pure relief as he reached out a hand to brush along the bandage on Leon's head. His tense posture slackened-shoulders slumping and heavy sigh of relief falling from his lips.
“Fuck, Leon. When you didn't answer...” The hand on Leon's bandage lifted for Chris to run through his short hair. “Piers told me he found you. Are you okay?”
“My head. It's fuzzy.”
“Is that all?”
“I don't know. I couldn't focus.”
“Okay. I'm going to check with your nurse. If you're free to go, I'll take you home.”
While it was clumsy, Leon managed to grab Chris's wrist to prevent him from stepping away. “Wait, what about inside? What's happening? What happened? I don't remember anything.”
“That's... They can handle inside without me.”
“Chris, what happened?”
“Umbrella. They wanted to hit us where it would hurt, and they succeeded.”
“Am I the only one?”
“Last I heard, yes. I'm sorry, Leon.”
“I want to go home.” Tears bubbled in his eyes causing his vision to blur to the point he could barely make out Chris's face. “Take me home.”
“Okay, okay. I have to check with your nurse. I know how angry you'll be with me if I don't. Five minutes.”
Knowing he wouldn't be able to speak, Leon did his best to nod his head in agreement and released his hold on Chris. Thankfully, he wasn't gone long and when he did return, it was to help Leon out of bed and to his car. The ride seemed to take no time at all as did the move from the car to his bedroom. He accepted Chris's help changing into clothing that wasn't covered in blood, then slid into bed.
“I'll be right back.” When Chris returned, he held a washcloth that he set on the nightstand before he started gently unwrapping the bandage around Leon's head. “You have blood in your hair. I can't promise to get all of it, but I'll do what I can.”
“Were other hospitals hit?”
“Not that I've heard. We've alerted all the other headquarters, so they can be more prepared than we were.”
“Good. That's good.”
“I'm sorry we failed you. You've always done an amazing job of caring for us, and we didn't protect you. We should have-”
“Stop. Please, I don't want to hear it. I can't right now.”
Silence fell between them while Chris focused on cleaning the blood out of Leon's hair and Leon stared across the room. The bandage wrapping around his head pulled his attention back to Chris in time to see him starting to stand. Once again, a hand on the wrist was all it took to stop Chris in his tracks. Chris let himself be tugged into Leon's bed and encompassed Leon in his arms without question. He pulled Leon in tighter at the first sound of sobbing and stayed that way until Leon drifted into a deep sleep.
Catboy Leon will climb into Chris’s lap with zero warning, that man will be dodging back fast to avoid spilling coffee or reports while Leon just makes himself comfy in his arms. Claire laughs at them for about three months till Leon can’t sit in Chris’s lap one day when he’s standing, changes laps to hers and now she’s being crushed to death by his thicc thighs plz Leon she is smaller than you.
