  • Not me over here sobbing listening to Chris Stapelton’s Maggie’s Song 😭😭😭

This is a really good album. Of course I’m pretty sure Chris Stapleton could sing a food menu and I would be all up in the feels. He just hits hard every time. So good.

While The World Was Burning by SAINt JHN

In a year where great hip hop records have been few and far between, with a lot of artists favouring stream-friendly quantity over quality, listening to Saint Jhn’s third album While The World Was Burning this week has been a breath of fresh air.

Coming in at a tight 37 minutes in length, While The World Was Burning is a masterfully produced deep dive into melodic, modern hip hop. Not taking anything too seriously, Saint Jhn packs the tracklist with playful and infectious numbers, such as atmospheric opener Sucks to be You, the summery, guitar-laced Lil Uzi Vert collab High School Reunion, Prom and destined chart-topper Monica Lewinsky, Election Year. What’s more none of the features here are there for just clout, with the likes of JID, 6LACK and Kanye West all helping to contribute and further elevate the tracks on which they appear.

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this record and if you are after something not too taxing to listen to this week, I highly recommend this one.

    Starting Over by Chris Stapleton

However, if it is not hip hop you are after but a sublime slice of Americana, then Chris Stapleton’s Starting Over may be the record for you. Opening on the pensive, acoustic strum of the title track, switching up to some bluesy southern rock for the Devil Always Made Me Think Twice and then following that with string-drenched, operatic ballad Cold, Stapleton immediately sets the record straight that he isn’t just another country singer. Over the course of the 14 tracks here, Stapleton shifts effortlessly between various styles and tones to help accentuate his honest, heartfelt songwriting.

Although it can become a bit too twee in places, overall this is an excellent outing for Stapleton with plenty musical and lyrical highlights to keep you emotionally-invested during the album’s near hour long runtime.

    Idiot Prayer by Nick Cave

And finally on the albums side, if you missed Nick Cave’s majestic lockdown live show from Alexandra Palace this summer, or simply want to relive all of its glory, then the Idiot Prayer live album is now available on vinyl and all streaming platforms. Featuring Nick alone on a piano covering classic tracks from across his back catalogue with the Bad Seeds, Grinderman and as a solo artist, it is a stunningly beautiful performance exquisitely captured.

    Tracks of the Week

One More Second (Future Islands Remix) – Matt Berninger

If you thought One More Second from The National’s Matt Berninger was excellent before, then the Future Islands remix will blow you away. Matt himself tweeted that his impression of the human condition improves every time he listens to Future Islands, and that’s exactly what this remix will do for you as Matt’s deep, emotive vocals are lifted by the Baltimore outfit’s glistening synth backdrop. Truly stunning!

If We Make It Through December – Phoebe Bridgers

It’s that time of year again when Phoebe Bridgers treats us to a seasonal cover, this time offering her take on Merle Haggard’s country classic If We Make It Through December. It is a typically stirring rendition, with Bridgers’ soft vocals making you feel every bit of the heartbreak. Emotional but hopeful.

    Lifelines – Sundara Karma

Back with a new EP and a new sound, Reading-based indie darlings Sundara Karma have given the guitars more of a backseat on Kill Me as they experiment with dreamy, mood-setting synths. On the EP’s closer, Lifelines, the experimentation of the EP’s previous tracks comes magically together, as the band deliver a hugely promising taste of what to expect from them in the future.

    NHS – Slowthai

And finally British rapper Slowthai offered a further taste of his forthcoming sophomore record TYRON this week, an unexpectedly more laidback and heartfelt number from the Northampton artist. The track offers a glimpse of Slowthai’s growing maturity as an artist, with the video (which you can watch above) showing that despite this softer, more serious side, he’s not lost the tongue-in-cheek humour that made him a star in the first place.

    Friendship
    Songwriter: Roebuck “Pops” Staples

    • [Verse 1]
Said, “what’s wrong my longtime friend?”
      Something’s bothering you
Tell me what the problem is
I’ll see what I can do
      There are times we disagree
We agree more than we don’t
We won’t always see eye to eye
But we will more than we won’t

      [Chorus]
      We got friendship
The kind that lasts a lifetime
Through all the hardship, you know, you’re a friend of mine
      We got friendship
The kind that lasts a lifetime
Through all the hardship, you know, you’re a friend of mine

      [Verse 2]
If you’re on the street, I’ll take your hand
If you’re hungry, I’ll give you food
If it’s money you need, I got some saved
If you’re sick, I’ll visit you
I’ve been where you are right now
You saw me through it all
I’ll lean on you, you can lean on me
I’m never gonna let you fall

      [Chorus]
      ‘Cause we got friendship
The kind that lasts a lifetime
Through all the hardship, you know, you’re a friend of mine
      We got friendship
The kind that lasts a lifetime
Through all the hardship, you know, you’re a friend of mine

      [Bridge]
Talk to me, old pal of mine
If you feel you can’t go on
Don’t you sweat, it ain’t over yet
This bond we share is strong
Now, your welfare is my concern
You weigh less than you think
I’ll carry you through the sinking sand
See if I’ll let you sink

      [Chorus]
      'Cause we got friendship
The kind that lasts a lifetime
Through all the hardship, you know, you’re a friend of mine
      Yeah, we got friendship
The kind that lasts a lifetime
Through all the hardship, you know, you’re a friend of mine
      Yeah, we got friendship
The kind that lasts a lifetime
Through all the hardship, you know, you’re a friend of mine
Through all the hardship, you know, you’re a friend of mine
