Will has always known there is a beast within him, he just never wanted to release it. It’s immoral to let the killer within you wear your skin. Will genuinely wants to help people. He’s empathetic, he can feel their pain and see their reasoning behind every choice they make. I’m not saying he wants to be the Good Guy, but he at least wants to walk away as neutral as possible. As unscathed as he can. Both the hero and the villain wear the victim’s blood, it’s just a matter of who opened the arteries. Will doesn’t want to smell copper anymore. That’s not the warmth he wants to feel. That’s not the power he wants. The problem is, the monster is hungry. The cage is closed but it can still reach through the bars and claw at his viscera. Wounding him again and again. Eventually those wounds start to scar over, to toughen up, too tired of repeated healing that it takes the short cut and adds its own shield. This scar is unfeeling. It nerves were damaged long ago, its vascularity is different. It’s not the same tissue. Its still Will, just different. Eventually, his internal self becomes more scar than flesh.
Hannibal expedited this process. He stuck his own hands inside Will and made a home. Hannibal is refined, though. He didn’t come with claws. He came with a scalpel. Scalpels are often sharp enough you don’t feel their initial cut until a little while after. Claws can damage, absolutely. But they are comparatively very dull and jagged. You can feel every nail rake against your skin. You can feel what scratch will draw blood versus a small innocuous mark on the skin. Will felt his beast gouge him. He didn’t sense Hannibal was marking him, too. Not until the wound had long since scabbed over. Not until he tried to move and stretch and felt the sting of his skin pulling against a wound he didn’t know was there. That’s Hannibal’s influence. Secretive but powerful.
Hannibal did not have the key to the cage that housed Will’s beast. Only Will did. Hannibal just added to the scar tissue. Once the flesh stopped being ripped and torn, once it stopped hurting so much, Will settled into the idea that maybe the beast wasn’t so bad. Maybe it didn’t matter anymore.
Will Graham hunts serial killers, lights his brain on fire, takes nightmares home with him to justify the cage. He’s not even sure he could just get ride of it but he also hasn’t truly tried. Locking it up was seemingly enough. The cage made him a villain and his work made him a hero. He thought they would balance him out. It did, in a way. But it was like standing in the middle of a teeter-totter in a storm. He was never balanced, he just never spent enough time on either side to become anything in particular. Either way, he ended up soaked in blood. The one thing he really didn’t want.
The lives Will took were not ordinary. He didn’t just shoot Garret Jacob Hobbs, he loaded him up with all the bullets his handgun could carry. He didn’t just defend himself against Randall Tier. He didn’t just beat the shit out of him. He took a (likely) unconscious man and snapped his neck. He didn’t have to do that; Tier was defeated. Will also didn’t need to display his corpse.
Will is more accepting of his true self. He knows and at least wants to accept Hannibal as he is, as the Ripper. Will has seen plenty of brutal murders and displays. He’s embodied those same killers. But now, he’s becoming one. One step towards the villain side of his scale. He knows Hannibal makes art with his murders. Will want to do the same. If it was Hannibal that helped him see, to become, then he could try and do what Hannibal does. But his hands aren’t Hannibal’s. His hands weren’t meant for art. His beast is not nearly as tamed as Hannibal’s. Will’s beast just got its first taste of freedom and there is no reigning that in. Will doesn’t kill again for awhile. The beast got a taste, but not a full meal. It’s true power is not yet seen.
Now, when he embodied Georgia Madchen, it was such a different killer than the previous ones he ever brought inside. She wasn’t some psychopathic, sociopathic, greedy and unhinged murderer. She was lonely. She literally could not perceive reality the same way. She was the closest to Will. Yes, he had encephalitis and was losing time and reality. But he became her because he was her. He got lost in the recreation because it hit the closest to home. He didn’t have to pretend nearly as much to understand her, but he went for it and nearly drowned. He cared about her. He wanted her to be a success story. Every other killer he obviously embodies as part of his gift/job. He takes those ghosts home with him. But they were all the same except for Georgia. They all killed for themselves. And the issue is that while Georgia is not the same as the other killers, it still showed Will that you can kill and maybe still be a good person. Maybe its not black and white. Maybe he is just lonely and reality is unreliable. Maybe instead of him caging the beast, it can guide him.
So yeah, Will as a killer is completely unhinged. He kills for different reasons than Hannibal (and I don’t mean the cannibalism part). Hannibal kills because he is above his sounders of pigs. He is better than them. And how dare they be rude to a god? They deserve to be smited. He saw god in Will, and wanted to bring him to divinity. To rule by his side. He saw himself in Will. But again, that’s the problem. He knew a beast lay in Will’s belly but Hannibal saw his own beast. A tamed yet incredibly savage and unforgiving creature. Will’s is not tamed. So when he sees Will try to kill Ingram, he sees that there isn’t always the same reason behind his need to kill. Will can kill without regard for purpose or consequence. Hannibal always makes purpose, even if it is petty and self-serving. Yes, killing Ingram had the purpose of protecting Peter, but Will wasn’t killing Ingram entirely for that purpose. He was doing it instead of killing Hannibal. Then Ingram’s death lost purpose because it was no longer about Ingram.
When you create a god from man, you cannot predict what features of man will carry into that of the god. You cannot predict what sins and treachery and power will stay hitched and then become more powerful with omnipotence. Will became a ruthless god.
So after the fall, he lost his sense on what is “too far”. He takes a hammer and sees a face he wants to smash in and does so. The skull caved in and blood pools and splatters and there is no satisfaction in it besides just being allowed to do it. He accepts murder. He walked to the edge of villainry and simply walked off. There is no balancing him back to neutral; arguably it never existed in the first place. But now Hannibal is worried about this beast. Hannibal now has to do everything against what he spent so long trying to do. He has to reel Will back in. He can’t tear god from the skies but he can try and remind him of his human elements. At the very least, to put meaning behind the violence. Hannibal shaped him once, and he could shape him again. But Will bends less now. Hannibal can’t get inside nearly as easily. Because the cage from the beast moved to around his heart. The beast’s cage protected the world from Will. The cage around his heart is protecting him from himself. That same cage also keeps Hannibal out.

Whoops it's time for Ladrien clowning again. Somewhat a follow-up to this post.
So if in Ephemeral Marinette really does find out Adrien is Chat Noir first, what if she tries to date him as Ladybug (to be clear I'm thinking she would probably conclude dating Adrien secretly is safer than dating Chat Noir openly), and then this backfires spectacularly because Adrien's dad is Hawkmoth, and he uses their relationship to get to Ladybug by akumatizing his own son?! Like that sounds crazy but also it would parallel Chat Blanc so well idek anymore.
And then the next question is, would Adrien be the one left with memories of what happened this time? And if so, how much will he know? That Ladybug can't find out his identity yet because if she does she'll try to date him, and Hawkmoth will use him to get to her?? Will he know that his dad is Hawkmoth after this??? Will the episodes that follow show him coping with that knowledge?!?!
