There are people on Blind and r/cscareerquestions who say that luck is THE biggest factor in whether or not you get hired - the idea is to maximize your skill, so that a lack of luck is no longer an issue. One thing I find interesting is that if you ask Google how much of CHESS is luck, the unanimous response is that chess is nearly 0% luck. What’s the difference? You could study one thing for a coding challenge, win the lottery, and get asked the exact same thing in the real interview. In chess, you could prepare an opening and find out its exactly the one they weren’t ready for…or response to one that’s exactly what you WERE ready for.
The obvious difference is that one is competitive 1:1. In a coding interview, you’re not going against an interviewer - if the process is done correctly, it will feel like you’re actually working together on a problem the way it would work if you were pair programming together in the field. A coding interview is more analogous to a test in which they have every candidate compete with an AI and assess who did the best. But there’s a subjective element. Someone can lose to the AI but make less stupid moves, or someone can beat the AI but still trigger red flags in how they handle certain situations.
Which leads to the less obvious difference - the rules are not constant. You can get anyone. One person on Quora jokes about how he knew one interviewer who disqualified people for underdressing, and another who disqualified people for overdressing. Sounds like a legend, but companies do vary in how they assess a result. Amazon, for example, tends to auto-fail if the output does not match what was expected. Some companies are more lenient.
Again, the interviewer can be anyone. The interviewer can even be me. If you are unfortunate enough to find yourself in that situation, I will ask you what you think of corgis. If you say anything less than “they are more precious than life itself,” I will tell you that you are probably not what we’re looking for. If you say you have one, I will ask you to write a print statement and pass you even if it seg faults.
You can play chess against anyone, but you can’t change the results. You win, draw, or lose. You can’t get a downloaded game file of what went down, plug it into another game engine, and find out that most engines would have found different results. It’s not debatable. The rules do not change.
It’s not a perfect system, but it may be better than the argued alternative of giving them a FizzBuzz test and then mostly going through their projects, asking them questions to hear about the technologies they work with and attempt to assess whether or not they really know them. There could be more BS there, but is there really not BS here? Someone on Blind wrote that the problem with coding interviews today is that they’ve become a filter, instead of a selection.
I still can’t decide for myself if what he/she said was really profound or really dumb.

Verizon support says you should turn off 5G to save your phone’s battery
Despite its relentless promotion of 5G phones and the fact that it spent more than $45 billion bidding on a new faster spectrum, Verizon support now is advising people on Twitter to turn off their phones’ 5G access to preserve battery life.
In a Sunday morning tweet, Verizon support helpfully suggested that “one way to help conserve battery life is to turn on LTE” if users found their batteries…

Disinformation experts aren’t happy about the trailer for HBO’s QAnon series
The teaser video for Q: Into the Storm, an upcoming documentary series from HBO about the QAnon conspiracy movement has a lot of deplatforming experts concerned; it looks more like a preview for a spy thriller than a careful examination of the umbrella group of conspiracy theories.
The breathless tone might be effective at building hype, but it has many disinformation experts concerned. Ben…
