Cordelia Chase appreciation
How is Cordelia Chase not more of a pop culture icon. Every single line this woman says is just utterly brilliant, she's my hero
@pryceism prompted: Meta prompt: Cordelia's transition from Queen C in Sunnydale and life in LA
Okay, so I think in the last year or so in Sunnydale things started to get a bit rough for her. Like, I remember an episode that showed her working at a store. Possibly in L.A. or at the least not in Sunnydale proper because it was framed as a shameful secret. i.e.: She had to work for her money because Daddy had gone and fucked the government. All that was terribly vague and I’m powerfully curious how bad things had gone, because a lot of rich people have shit finances but they’re still technically pretty well off because they own property and other shit. They’ve got assets you know. Of course American wealth tends to have a lot of nouveau riche that don’t have the wide safety net that old money has and are possibly unwilling to sell off their cars/jewelry/clothes/house/etc because status symbols. The other possibility is that her family was upper middle class living beyond their means. The tax dodging is interesting because it’s very common for rich people to pay a lot fewer taxes so there’s the question of if her father was just trying to avoid paying taxes to line their pockets more or to keep the bills at bay because the mortgage is high or they’re leasing too many cars. The other possibility which I’m kinda leaning toward, is that dear old dad was a Libertarian, which would make sense given he didn’t pay his taxes at all for some time and along with their other beliefs, I can see that playing a part in Cordy cutting herself off from her family much much more than just “daddy was irresponsible with money.”
Anyway, tangent aside, but let’s be real, you came here for the rambling tangents.
Despite her family’s problems, I think surviving alone was quite the culture shock. I do wish they’d been more specific about how she was making money or managed to even secure an apartment given most require you to at least pay upfront the first month and a deposit. Now I’m guessing she probably saved from the retail job she had but let me tell you, now matter how you fuckin’ slice it, if you’re keeping the series in the ninties or bumping it up to a more modern setting, teenagers do not usually get well-paying jobs, and while she could theoretically easily save without other bills no doubt, I wonder if she wasn’t asked to help with the family financial troubles and had to line her mattress with bills to keep them to herself, you feel me? Wow, this is tangent city, right?
So I do think she was focusing entirely on her acting career and didn’t have a part time job. I imagine she was doing a lot of scamming and bullshit and networking. She’s very charming and seemed to know a lot of people by the time she ran into Angel again. Hot girl privilege, you know? She may have even played some sugar daddies. Strung them along for as long she could avoid sleeping with them. Not that I personally think there’s anything wrong with that, and frankly I don’t think Cordy would either, but she’d be extremely picky when it came to that caveat. The creepy old men? Absolutely not. The younger, more attractive monied fuckbois? Totally fine.
It’s a wreak on your mental health tho. Maybe she was delusional when it came to her talent, but everyone knows, especially women, that when it comes to modelling and acting you gotta get in there quick and make your money while you’re viable for ingenues and romantic leads. (Never forget that Maggie Gyllenhal was turned down in the her 30s to be a romantic interest for an actor in his 50s because she was “too old”.) I think she was getting scared when she met Angel and was more than happy to essentially involve herself in a startup because it was much more secure than her flagging acting career.
This is the perfect joke.
cordelia sighed. the past was better left in the past, she knew that. but the memories were all fresh again. she didn’t plan on leaving xander in the dog house for too long, but he certainly did deserve a good telling off. she could potentially get over it, given time. the hurt was elevated by the recent rush of memories and the fact that she still had feelings for him. cordy was unsure whether this was just because she was processing all these memories or whether it because he was the first boy she actually had any true feelings for. if her younger self had ever found out she had fallen in love with xander harris, she would probably become a hermit or move to china or something. “hearing you admit that you’re an idiot gives me a little satisfaction,” cordy said. “no, she didn’t tell me. i haven’t actually seen her since i started to remember things. she approached me once when i didn’t know who she was asking if i knew where angel was. i thought she was crazy – i mean i’m not wrong, but at least now i know what she meant,” cordelia said, going off again, making a short story long. “but as if i would know where angel was. like, should she not be asking buffy that? it was weird. anyway – no, i saw it. not the act, that would have been gross. but on tv… look that sounds weird, but you know about the library right?” she asked. “well i found myself in there for some bizarre reason. found out our lives were taped, but not like a reality show. it’s so odd.”
So many times, Xander had ruined his own relationships. Love was simply something he struggled with, of any kind. But Xander knew that was his problem, not Cordy's, not Anya's, not anyone but him. He'd grown up a lot since those days, after everything, but it didn't make up for it all. "Oh come on, I've always known I'm an idiot. I'm just even better at admitting it now. Doing my best to be less of an idiot." Probably not something he could ever convince Cordy of. He'd well and truly blown any chances of being the one to make her happy, he knew that. Xander just had to accept it, no matter how much it sucked, looking at her and knowing he had hurt her. He shoved his hands into his jacket pockets, head ducking as she explained how she knew what she knew. "Right, I heard about the Library. Haven't watched it yet, kinda seems freaky. But obviously it doesn't have everything if you don't know why Faith thought you'd know where Angel was. You worked with him, in LA." Xander knew how all that went down. It’d broken his heart to hear, not even directly, just an offhand comment made that Cordy had slipped away in her coma. A coma she wouldn’t even have been in if she hadn’t decided to save Angel’s life. Yeah, Xander might be less of an idiot now, but he still didn’t like that vampire, never would.

Title: By Her Side
Fandom: Angel the Series
Pairing: Cordelia Chase x reader: F/F
Genre: Fluff and Comfort
Summary: Cordelia has a vision which means it's your job to take care of her
Notes: Thank you for enjoying my last one so much. Here’s one that isn’t as sad.
You where in your room at the hotel when you heard it. The scream that pierced all of your bones. You rushed to the door and opened it hearing the scream echo up the floor from the stairs.
“Vision” You heard Wesley yell from the ground floor. You ran across the corridor and down the stairs. You raced to Cordelia who was now laying on the floor, Wesley’s hand resting under her head, her hands gripping her face.
You knelt down beside her, eyes scanning her body to see any signs of potential injury. “She’s okay” Wesley’s voice came to you somewhere from the back of your mind. You weren’t so sure if he was right. Cordelia was groaning and her eyes were closed tightly shut.
“It’s okay” You said trying your best to sooth her though it seemed to be to no avail.
Her eyes opened shocking both you and Wesley and you both moved back to allow Cordelia space. “An alley, there’s blood, a woman screaming.” She said with long pauses in between breaths.
“Do you know where the alley is?” Wesley asked her.
She thought for a moment and you wanted to wrap your arms around her. “Outside a café in downtown”
Wesley gave her a look and Cordelia shook her head “That’s all I got”. She looked at you and Westly her eyes frantic “Go” she shouted at Westly.
You wished you knew what was happening in her head, maybe you could take some of the weight off. But you also knew Cordelia and Cordelia would insist that she didn’t need help.
Your mind went back to the present. “Hey” you said leaping from where you knelt and running after Cordelia. She stopped when she realised that you had followed her and she turned around. You could tell the vision had shattered her, she was physically tired, her hair a mess and her eyes you saw where close to tears.
“Listen” She said waving her hand in your direction “I know you’re trying to help but im fine” she was smiling but it was faint and strained “you can go back to whatever it was that you were doing in your room.” Her smile faded completely as she turned her back to you.
Now you new the best thing to do was to leave her alone for now, if she needed you she would come by herself. You did as you were told and went back to your room.
You hadn’t been there long before you decided to head back downstairs again. You figured Cordelia wouldn’t be happy if she saw you again so soon after the vision but the silence was getting to you.
Sure most of the time it was just you and Angel at the hotel but even though it was silent he was always there if you needed company. Right now however it was silent and Cordelia didn’t want to speak to you. You had to change that.
You moved quietly not wanting to startle her or make her run again. You searched for a while until eventually you heard noises from the bathroom. You knocked. “Cordy” you called. There was no answer. You knocked again louder this time and with more urgency “Cordelia”
You watched the handle slowly rotate.
She appeared in front of you. You could see her red eyes, puffy from tainted tears. To you she still looked beautiful.
There was an awkward pause as you both acknowledged each other. You placed your hand softly on her shoulder. “Hey” you said gently. “Talk to me. What did you see?”
“I don’t want to talk.” Cordelia told you simply.
“What if I distracted you.” You said. Cordelia raised an eyebrow,
“What do you mean?”
“Well, what if I made you a bath, and got you your favourite food and took care of you.”
Cordelia considered this for a moment “mmm a bath does sound nice” she smiled her first real smile since the vision.
A few minutes passed by and soon enough you had everything laid out just how you wanted it. Cordelia was in the bath. Her beautiful body was laying in front of you and you had to stop yourself from blushing profusely from the intimacy of the situation. There were brightly lit candles along the window ledge and the food was laid out nicely on a small table next to the bath. It was almost romantic you thought.
You leaned over the bath giving Cordelia a kiss on the forehead. “Rest up. I won’t be far away if you need me” You told her. You walked towards the door.
“Wait” Cordelia shouted. You turned your head not knowing what it was that she wanted “Why don’t you stay? I could use some company”
You happily nodded and closed the door behind you, walking back to Cordelia and leaning down by her side where you would always be.
