Faces: First Step (1970)
50 years ago, the Small Faces became the Faces, but that evolutionary process was so gradual and informal (and poorly communicated) that U.S. pressings of the new group’s debut album still promoted the former handle, while the U.K. edition addressed the significant recent changes within the group.
Changes that saw Small Faces stalwarts Ronnie Lane (bass), Ian McLagan (keyboards), and Kenney Jones (drums) replacing their former leader Steve Marriott (who’d run off with Humble Pie) with a pair of Jeff Beck Group alums, in guitarist Ronnie Wood and an up-and-coming frontman named Rod Stewart.
There they are, lined up for your inspection on the cover of 1970’s First Step, and I’m pretty sure that Rod (the former ‘Mod’) would never again look so shy and sheepish as he does here – let alone be put in a corner – for the duration of his storied career.
But the Faces were, by nature, a rather informal and unassuming bunch, and still a work-in-progress, as this debut attests; so, here, you’ll only find scattered clues of the sub-Stones moxie and exuberance they’d become known for, along with numerous sonic dead ends.
For instance: McLagan’s growling, grinding organ at the onset of Dylan’s “Wicked Messenger” may have you thinking this is a Deep Purple album, then Ronnie goes off to the country on “Stone,” before Stewart and Wood’s “Around the Plynth” indulges in a Zeppelin-like slide guitar-fest, likely left over from their previous employer. There are also a pair of going-nowhere instrumentals (“Pineapple and the Monkey,” “Looking Out the Window”) to contend with, but the exquisitely soulful “Devotion” at least has the makings of a Faces song (minus the requisite energy, let alone cheek) and you can feel the band inching closer to discovering themselves on “Shake, Shudder, Shiver” and “Nobody Knows.”
Which really leaves just two serviceable singles that have likewise shown some longevity, in the both subtle and bombastic “Flying,” and the good-time wisdom of “Three Button Hand Me Down.”
But, hey, everybody’s gotta start somewhere, or start again, in the case of the (Small) Faces, and this somewhat modest First Step would still serve as launchpad, not just for the band’s colorful run through the early ‘70s, but Rod’s decades-long solo career – initially with the faithful Faces in a supporting role.
* I guess it could be a distant relative to The Jeff Beck Group’s “Plynth (Water Down the Drain).”
